Honda Odyssey Torque Converter Class Action Lawsuit Complaint

Honda Odyssey Model Year 2005 Through 2009 Purchasers & Lessees File Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Against Honda Over Allegedly Defective Torque Converters.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Honda North America, Inc. and Honda Motor Company, Ltd. (“Honda Motor” or “Honda” or “Defendants”) in the United States District Court for the Central District of California (styled Laura Heintz v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc., et al Class Action Case No. CV11-09311), alleging, among other things, that Honda designed, manufactured, distributed, marketed, sold and leased model year 2005 through 2009 Honda Odyssey vehicles with defective torque converters that suddenly and without warning prevent certain Honda Odyssey vehicles from accelerating or maintaining their speed, according to the Honda Odyssey Torque Converter class action lawsuit complaint.

The Honda Odyssey Torque Converter class action lawsuit complaint is reportedly brought on behalf of a putative class consisting of the following persons, unless otherwise excluded:

All purchasers and lessees of any 2005 through 2009 Honda Odyssey vehicles who reside in the United States  (the “Class”).

All Members of Class I who are “consumers” within the meaning of California Civil Code section 1761(d) (the “CLRA Sub-Class”)

The Honda Odyssey Torque Converter class action lawsuit complaint reportedly asserts claims for alleged violations of the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, violations of unfair business practices act, fraud, breach of written warranty under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, and breach of express warranty under Cal. Com. Code section 2313..

I am all for it. Honda knew the torque converter was bad and never did anything about it. Now lets work on a class action lawsuit for the transmission.

Bought my Odyssey new 5 yrs ago..It has 73,000 miles and I am now having shudder problems with the tranny..Took it to Honda and they did a computer update and a tranny flush and said that should do it. Am afraid my transmission will go out after my warranty expires..75,000…Hope not.

When I first purchased my 2005 Odyssey, Honda dealership (Carey Paul Honda), I consistently returned the vehicle for shuttering and brief hesitation. They would keep the vehicle over the course of a day, but reported to me that it did not duplicate the problem. However, after minutes of leaving their lot; you guested it, the problem revealed itself to me. I did returned the vehicle a couple of weeks later and one mechanic told me that he did get that shuttering, but they believed that it was due to the engine harneses and they replaced them (still under warrenty). I’ve had sensors replaced, fuel system cleaning professionally done, and expensive tune-ups completed, but the engine light will not stop coming on. This problem is very frustrating, I enjoy keeping up with the maintenance on all of my vehicles, but this issue has not been effectively resolved with Honda. What is also annoying : I believe that my problem is not unique to the dealership, and I am very crurious to find out how many other customers got the run around and their vehicle (s) are still defective.

We bought a 2002 Odyssey new, and it has been serviced by the book at the dealership. At 100,700 miles the transmission went out. I appealed to Honda to help in the bill of $4,600, and they refused. I will not drive another Honda.

I had this same problem with my 2002 Oddy. I’m filing a class action suit. Hope you’ll join me. my mechanics bro. had a free replacement tranny.

      • Dave Moore December 30, 2013, 11:19 am

Geri – I agree that a suiot needs to be started – again. Honda has already “settled” the first suit regarding the premature failure of the xmissions in the Oddy’s. I have experience the failure of the replacement xmission 2 weeks ago. Same time and mileage as the first one. In my opinion, HOnda knowingly endangered the public by installing the same xmissions, repaired to last only to the agreed upon time and mileage stipulated by the first suit. We are all stuck with basically the same issue with the same basic transmissions that failed originally. This time it is known that, if the xmission fails while driving, a catastrophic failure event can occur causing loss of control of the vehicle. This was known, and they chose to re-introduce the same xmissions back into the vehicles, knowing that this was a possibility. Blatant disregard for injury or loss of life. I think we, as a class, need to sue them again, this time include the torque converter and make them do it right this time. That means they need to actually fix the issues that caused the failures in the first place. I am not prepared to dump a perfectly good vehicle because the company is irresponsible.

i have a 2002 honda odyssey and my check engine light came on a few weeks ago for guess what?! Torque converter clutch system failure. I am hoping replacing the TCC solenoid will resolve my issue. But all this stuff im reading about faulty torque converters is disheartening. It sounds like this goes back farther than 2005.though i am not experiencing any jerking.

  • Darrell Storts November 24, 2011, 8:29 pm

My 2007 Odyssey torque converter failed at 4,000 miles. I was unable to to get and Honda dealer to acknowledge the problem until after the TSB was issued. PCM was reprogrammed and later torque converter was replaced at about 19,000 miles. Converter continued to shudder.
I sold the vehicle before powertrain warranty expired. Unfortunately these practices of non compliance Honda has followed are common among automobile manufacturers. “Never admit there is a defect”
There needs to be new legislation other than the sorry Lemon Laws to address this concern. The manufacturers should have to list known defects on the window sticker. Wouldn’t that halt sales in a hurry?

  • LAC November 25, 2011, 5:12 pm

It’s a shame that it has come to this. So many purchased their Odyssey vans and paid a premium for the perceived Honda quality and reliability. I currently own 2 Honda vehicles and have owned 5 in the past. This is the last. I can buy a much cheaper vehicle with similar quality construction but better styling and features. The expenses associated with the known torque converter problem, engine mount issues and pending transmission failure, this van is a money pit! Ironically, I just received a notice today about air conditioner condenser failures caused by pebbles kicked up from the road. Enough.

We have a 2004 van that the torque converter is been making noise and shifting hard. The shop said replace torgue converter and tranny. Also have a huge dent in back door from van rolling away because of shift lock switch problem. Honda junk, never again for us.

    • Geri Marshall April 9, 2013, 1:42 am

      where?

  • Bhavin Patel November 30, 2011, 1:11 pm

I bought new 2008 Honda Odyssey back in March 2008. After about a year @ 22000 miles my wan was almost undrivable, RPM go up and down about 500-800RPM while you accelerate & brake. Honda replaced Torque Converter, front engine mount and also did multiple PCM software update. Ever since that happen till today at about 52000 miles, i have never feel that my odyssey is running at it’s 100%, i have lot of shudder / Judder problems, vibration, harsh / jerky downshift, hard power steering and so many other minot things but i am sure that all these problem will lead to transmission failure one day and are creating more issues in the vehicle and god knows how much it will cost me down the road. I have made atleast ten visit to get all these issues corrected but everytime i got “vehicle is performing normal – all other vehicle run like this” I’ve been asking to duplicate them with other van but they are not able to do it till today. I am in for this class action. Really hoping that it will conclude with great result. HONDA KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM BUT DON”T WANT TO CORRECT IT.

  • Duy December 1, 2011, 6:31 pm

I have own 2 generation of honda van and have the same problmes.

First was the Honda odessey 1995 (first generation of odessey made by honda).

Now I own the 2006 Oddessey, I started to get vibration on accelleration and decelleration on the high way, and thought it was due to the tire. Then I start getting grinding noises from down hill braking to complete stop. I knew and have to live with the vihecle and just wait for this class action lawsuit.

I hope that honday fix this problem in the new design and can replace a good tran/torqe converter in my vihecle.

I use to favor honda cars over toyota, but now I would not buy another honda car again in my life and will not recommend honda cars to any one anymore.

  • Joe December 6, 2011, 8:38 am

Just want to make sure I am included in this. Have a 2006 Odyssey purchased new and at 67k miles am now having problems with transmission/torque converter.

  • Tim December 6, 2011, 10:52 am

It was only a matter of time until the class-action frenzy hit the Odyssey.
I’ve had 2 new 2007 Odyssey’s, the first one was totaled at 9900 miles and the insurance paid for a new one, and my second one is now at 54000. My first one was perfect, I thought if BMW made a van this would be it. My second Odyssey had a failed torque converter at 27000 miles which was replaced under warranty. At 54000 miles it is still running showroom new, averaging 26-30 mpg on the highway and the trans is perfectly smooth, even the econ is only noticed when the green econ light comes on.
My worry is resale value, which I’ve seen plummet due to the multitude of complaints and now this class-action lawsuit. If only Honda had owned up to their defect earlier and accepted responsibility it would still be seen as an honorable corporation, and resale value would have remained strong. Alas, it is not to be.

  • Lowe Ohana December 6, 2011, 11:11 am

We bought a Honda Odyssey 2006 two years ago and it has been making this humming sound for a long time; I found out on this forum that many more customers are having the same problem related to the torque converter. I am very disappointed at the lack of quality check at the Honda assembly shop for this problem to occur. We are forking out money every month to pay for this car and now this. I will not buy a Honda again and will discourage my families, relatives, and friends from doing the same. Honda must recall all these vehicles with torque converters to be fixed at their expense. Honda cannot fool customers.

  • jerdesab December 6, 2011, 11:18 am

My odyssey 2007 first problem in 4 months when I purchased it was the stabilizer. Very hard to turn left and right so, I brought it back where I bought at Atlantic Honda and they replaced the STABILIZER. Second, it was vibrating so hard running on 35 t0 45 mph.
I brought to Hillside Honda in New york. They adjusted only the computer and told me it should be Ok. Getting appointment at Hillside honda is a nightmare. I got the van the following morning and drove on my way home.
I was only less than A MILE when I experienced the van vibrates again as if nothing was repaired. Hillside HONDA sucks so I went to a different Honda Dealership the P.S Honda which you don’t have to schedule appointment. I told them what happened and they replaced the TORQUE CONVERTER right away. Next Van to purchase will be Toyota.

    • Andre Garcia November 27, 2012, 11:52 pm

Just traded my Toyota for a honda, it was a 2005 Sienna with 192K miles on it, it ran smoother than the Honda, and my honda already started showing the Torque Converter issue with only 60k miles on it….

  • DC December 6, 2011, 11:29 am

Although this lawsuit is up to 2009 models, this issues affects 2010 models as well. The software updates at the factory or after the release of the the 2010 models to the market did not fix this issue..

  • Richard Hartnett II December 7, 2011, 1:41 pm

I got the run around too and they made me come up with almost 1/2 of the cost to get it fixed. No problems since it was replace even though they denied that was the problem.

  • Jerry Glass December 7, 2011, 7:57 pm

  • Cynthia Bloss-Deerdoff December 13, 2011, 8:28 am

I have a Honda Odessey 2006 and the transmission is bad now at 135000 I thought Honda would last a long time, shifts hard and big thump. where are you Honda .

  • John Irwin December 14, 2011, 10:43 pm

Good luck to you folks. I am on my 3rd transmission for my 2002 Odyssey. This one is a Jasper. If you have some time and want to see some real anger, go to Odysseytransmission.com. Currently over 800 posts. Honda has treated these customers poorly. Mostly 1999-2003 – but you can see that things didn’t get much better after that. Next week I pick up a new Subaru for my wife. No more Accords, no more Hondas. I will keep the Odyssey til I die because it isn’t worth crap……….

  • Raj December 15, 2011, 10:56 am

I started seeing the symptoms and the issues discussed by folks here in this forum on our 2008 Odyssey EXL. Initially I was getting the judder at 40-45 mph when accelerating, once a week and now it is happening at least once a day.
This is the first complaint I have seen so far, I have around 30K miles on the van. This has been there for a month now

    Please clarify the following:

    1) How serious is the issue, should I get it fixed ASAP?
    2) Please advice what I need to do, to fix this issue. Not sure how to communicate this to dealer.

  • P. Pham December 17, 2011, 8:18 am

I own the EX 2007 model. The new torque converter was replaced @ 47k associated with new software updated. Now at 70k miles, the judder and vibration happened again. The service manager at the local dealership took a serveral driving tests and said it is normal. This is wrong.
I will support for this action lawsuit. This will be my last choice for Honda.

  • Yaroslav Bell December 17, 2011, 9:08 am

It was about 50.000 when I first notice that metal shuddering sound coming on 45 mph, while that your RPM goes up and down between 12 -14 and you hear shudder sound in the low 12 position.I took it to Honda service on Nostrand ave, in Brooklyn.I ask them to take me when they do a road test. They said Ok we will call you in 3-4 hours. They did and and tell me they already did a road test without me and in order to get rid of my problem a have to replace 3 broken engine mounts and it going to cost me $1000.00{64000.00 – no warranty}I ask are you sure this cause my noise and they said yes. I was about to sell my car< but for some reason I decided to fix it to pay for it $1000.00 and forget about it. I can't forget about it for 6 month already. After they "fix" it and I paid $1005.00 I went on a highway and heard the same problem I came with. Now I' m in dispute with Honda.I think they never did a road test on a highway to go 45 MPH, not before and not after the job.I even doubt now if engine mounts been broken. I don't trust them. They are dishonest company.

  • Darrell December 19, 2011, 10:44 pm

Same problem. At first I was told they did not feel anything and was told to come in and dive the machanic around and get the van to shudder. I did, and it did. The manchanic told me it was the torque converter and it would cost me $1,500 for the repair. I am upset that now I find out that this is a common Honda/Odyssey problem that they have not recalled. All other problems have been taken care of but this one dosen’t look good for Honda.

  • J Null December 20, 2011, 2:05 pm

My 2008 EXL has 64,000 miles on it. I took it in for the software “update” at about 45,000 miles because of excessive shuddering at 40-45 mph. The service department says it was all fixed.

IT was slightly better for a few months, but now it is back and worse than ever. I took it into the shop, they recommend $1,400 to replace the torque converter. They will not warranty the part or labor…

  • Peter Rothstein December 21, 2011, 11:27 pm

Bought a new 2001 Odyssey. First transmission problem was at 31,000 miles, they replaced solenoid switches. Transmission failed and was replaced at 34,000 miles. Transmission 2 failed at 59,000 miles and was replaced. Transmission 3 failed at 113,000 miles and was replaced. Transmission 4 failed at 150,000 miles and Honda says “go jump in the lake.”

  • Peter D January 3, 2012, 3:19 pm

I hope Honday takes on a chin with this. They’ve stonewalled me about the jerking motion for awhile now. Customer Service America reps are complete a-holes. Very abrasive and downright mean. I showed him a Service Bulletin 06-083 saying the part is a DEFECT and he says that was for dealers not consumers…really, buddy? helping your case to keep it away from folks…have ’05 Ody and will never buy another Honda car…

    • bob smith April 13, 2012, 2:52 pm

Send me copy of srevice bulletin # 06-083 please.

  • kamlesh patel January 7, 2012, 10:31 am

I have same problem. It;s cost about $1400-1500.My odyssey is 6 year old (2005)

  • Kevin s January 11, 2012, 1:43 pm

2007 Honda Odyssey Exl w/Res-nav same problem shuddering and when driving on highway 65-70 mph Eco light keeps going off and on and the tranny seems like it kicks the van forward? The shuddering is driving at speeds around 40mph. WTF? Still have the certified used warranty and the 100,000 mile power tram will this be covered? Thanks Honda my wife only drives my children in this vehicle?

  • Tom F January 12, 2012, 8:03 pm

Wow, I have a 2011 Odyssey new body and love it. Until the shuddering started over Christmas. 29k Miles. The dealer replaced the torque converter and it still did not fix the issue. I’m in a holding pattern until Honda engineer figures out what to do next. I’ve recently learned this is starting to surface across the country on several new 2011 with high mileage. I should had done my research better as it looks like from all the comments above and this class action law suit, it’s a known issue with Honda. Disappointing as it’s really a nice van.

  • John S January 16, 2012, 6:55 pm

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey. About a year ago, the vehicle started shuddering horribly between 35 and 42 miles per hour. I took the vehicle in to my Honda dealer in St. Cloud, MN. They advised I change the transmission fluid. This was a waste of money, it did nothing to resolve the problem. They then indicated it is the motor mounts, but they could not determine which one is bad and it would cost $1000 to replace both. I do not think it is the motor mounts, it is an extreme shaking that seems more related to shifting. I used to think Honda made high quality, long lasting vehicles. Now I know that to not be the case. Anyone out there considering a Honda vehicle should look elsewhere – Honda SUCKS and refuses to stand behind their products!

  • Jason Hamilton January 16, 2012, 8:24 pm

I completely agree with all of the above comments. I bought a new 2005 Odyssey that now has about 97000 miles on it. It started having the shuddering problem (40 – 45 MPH) over a year ago. After several realignments, new tires, etc — each time allegedly solving the problem — here we are still with the same recurring problem. Obviously a design issue, and Honda is silent on it. I spent extra $ when I bought it expecting to get “Honda quality”, which apparently is now just a myth. Particularly since they are not standing behind their product now, with a design flaw that they have known about for years!!! Instead, they string their customers along with “repairs” that they know are temporary fixes. I haven’t done the torque converter replacement or the software patch — from reading this thread and others, the issue simply returns the majority of the time. Completely unsatisfactory and unprofessional. Next time I will buy a different brand. Honda apparently is no longer synonomous with quality like they used to be.

I completely support the class action lawsuit for this. Honda should pay for knowingly deceiving their consumers.

  • Brian C January 25, 2012, 12:14 pm

Could you please extend this down to the 2003 model year. Many of us are having the same issues with the Trans. and Torque Conv. Please contact me if interested in bringing 2003 into it or getting one started for the 2003.

  • JB January 27, 2012, 8:54 am

Please consider extending the lawsuit to include faulty transmissions . I am the owner of a 2002 Odyssey & paid an indepedent transmission shop to rebuild my transmission when Honda refused to help with the repair costs. 2002 is the ” forgotten year”. That year has some of the most recorded problems & yet no compensation or accountability by Honda.

  • Thomas Carson January 28, 2012, 12:56 pm

I am the original owner of a 2001Honda Odyssey. In October, 2007, the transmission failed at 99,860 miles. The vehicle was brought to the dealership of purchase, where I was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of approximately $4500.00. I gave the dealership acknowledgement to proceed with the work. The next day I was informed by a private mechanic that American Honda had entered into a court settlement which recognized the deficient transmission design and that my vehicle should be covered under the settlement. I contacted the dealer and they registered no knowledge of such a settlement. Upon my insistence they agreed to check with American Honda. My claim was substantiated and I received a replacement transmission at no cost. Unbeknown to me, the replacement transmission contained the same design faults and failed this week with 57,000 miles recorded. The dealer and American Honda has refused to compensate me for a second replacement transmission in spite of their awareness of continuous design flaws which continue to lead to inevitable transmission failure. I believe that Honda should acknowledge that the continuous transmission failures are due to a design and manufacturing defect and take full responsibility for its replacement. To do otherwise would represent a total lack of concern for complete customer safety and protection, particularly considering the extended period of the known defect and safety hazard of a transmission failure.
Would Gene Williams of the Initiative Legal Group please amend the class action suit to owners of 2001-2011 in accordance with page 17, lines 24-27 of the suit?
I am prepared to support the suit in all manner possible.

  • Tim Adamchik January 30, 2012, 8:16 pm

I have a 2012 Honday Odyssey with a shuttering. I literally have just under 1000 miles on it. I purchased it January 2, 2012 and am experiencing horrible problems. I believe this problem extends beyond the 2009 model year. Honda knew about this… shame on them staking their reputation on quality over such a thing! People are loyal to their Honda’s… as this is my third. I am very disappointed, and if they do not make this right… it will be my last for sure!

  • Rex Powell February 7, 2012, 7:05 pm

This is not a new problem, it is in my 2003 Acura 3.2TL as well. I was lucky enough to have the tranny break down right b4 the warranty expires. so honda replaced the tranny but then after that I ended with shudder problem , slow acceleration and delay after shifting.

  • Ray Wang February 12, 2012, 9:40 pm

I bought a new 2005 Honda Odyssey. The car started shuddering around 45 MPH. It happens quite often, but, not every day. It is annoying.

  • Rick P February 13, 2012, 9:45 am

I hope this suit goes through and gets resolved for the consumer. I have a 2007 with over 100,000. I first noticing the shuttering last year just before the recall was issued. When I took it to my local Honda dealership, I was told the recall would take care of the issue, but it didn’t. Shortly after the “fix”, I deployed overseas as a civilian contractor, but unfortunately my wife never noticed an issue. I got home a year later and now hate driving my van, which I used to love! I now have to pay upwards to $1100 to replace the torque converter, even though I feel Honda should be covering the bill!

  • mike canoose February 20, 2012, 2:35 pm

2002 transmission going out check engine lite on for tork converter im a used car dealer i took it to litia honda they wont cover there badly built trans the filter is in side where it cant be changed so all the crap builds up and go’s inti the valve bodys cloging them up they can down shit or go neutral the shuddering is do to low pressure to clutch packs its like haveing a bad clutch in a standerd 5 speed car the trans needs to be thrown in the trash can and find some one that knows how to build one that fits the odessey and you can change the filter like your oil filter can you say those as ho’s that did this we need to get honda for this

    • Chris March 10, 2012, 1:10 pm

do any of you people know how to type in proper English? sheesh

  • Sandeep B March 6, 2012, 9:14 pm

I have a 2006 Odyssey EX-L and had the torque converter changed at 60k miles. The van drove fine for a few months, then I noticed harder shifts and downshifts and it has continued to get worse. I now have 85k miles on the van and it feels at times like the transmission is going to fail. Not real motivated to take it in, since it took me months to convince the dealer and Honda of America to replace the torque converter. I really hope this class action lawsuit goes through.

  • Matt Taylor March 11, 2012, 12:45 pm

2005 EX-L. Bad t-converter. Bad shutter during up shift or down in the 30-45 mph range.

  • JAG March 11, 2012, 2:54 pm

Own a 2005 Odyssey. Loud whining noise: Power Steering Pump Failure. Honda is fixing this problem for those still under warranty. They extended this warranty for 7 yrs. or 100,000 miles. I did not get the notice and now am having this problem and am at 135,000. Will take to dealership to see what they will do. Also experiencing hard shifting and shuddering. Rotation and balancing of tires does not fix the problem. Why do these big companies always say it is not their fault? Thank the Lord for these forums. We spend $45,000.00 on a vehicle that the dealer denies has problems. This is my second Odyssey and I love the car, but Honda should uphold it’s good reputation and fix the problems they really do know about. Especially since this is a vehicle we buy to transport our children. Too many recalls on this vehicle. Oh, not to mention the slider door issues that they deny and won’t fix….

  • michael jungblut March 13, 2012, 5:26 pm

I too have been battling Honda With poor gas mileage and the dreaded highway surge or thud since about 30,000 miles. After months of being told that this very annoying thud on the highway was normal, I gave up hoping that my issue was not unique to my van. The dealer technician even said the transmission behavior was odd, but Honda tech line said no fault codes = no problem. Now with nearly 95,000 miles on the odometer I can barely stand to drive the vehicle during family trips because the thud is so annoying. Words can’t express my level of disappointment with my $40k Honda Odyssey touring purchase and Honda’s insistence that an obvious defect is normal. Fail!

  • HeShootsHeScores March 19, 2012, 9:54 am

I own a 2005 Honda Odyssey Touring which was fabhulous for 5 years aside from the Pax tire issues which I replaced with non-Pax tires. I have been battling transmission, shuddering, “feels like a washboard road effect”, change transmission fluid, re-did timing on engine valves to the tune of $1,200 and van is at the dealer this very minute to examine shuddering effect from 20-50 mph going uphill, on straightaways, whenever. After reading about the Class Action lawsuit today, I have no doubt that this is a transmission, Vibration/Tourque Converter Failing issue that Honda has not “owned up to”. I have been driving Honda’s since 1986 (!!) and will see how this gets resolved but I am seriously thinking aboout a new non-Honda vehicle.

  • Jorge Macias April 1, 2012, 5:28 pm

Question. Is there any hope for the hundreds or maybe thousands of Odyssey owners who bought their Vans from 1999 to 2001? People who had change the transmisons 3 or 4 times, and Honda will not give warranty, charging 3k + each time. I will imagine any company with defective product should replace it with a new and improved trany. No the same trash. How can any company could get away with this? • Odyssey Owner April 29, 2012, 7:49 pm

I’m just another unhappy customer in NJ who just had to replace my expensive trans @ 91k. I also had my own nightmare experience with all the unfortunate symptoms spelled out in the lawsuit. My question is however, if the current class action covers only those in the state of California and we in New Jersey have to initiate our own Class Action or are we definitely covered under Laura Heintz v. AHMC??

Can someone please let me know..

I am thinking you are covered based on the language below:

The Honda Odyssey Torque Converter class action lawsuit complaint is reportedly brought on behalf of a putative class consisting of the following persons, unless otherwise excluded:

All purchasers and lessees of any 2005 through 2009 Honda Odyssey vehicles who reside in the United States (the “Class”).

Just want to get in on this lawsuit. We’ve just bought our frist Honda Oddy (2008) and have already been told the “shudder” in acceleration is totally normal.

  • CGD April 30, 2012, 9:18 pm

Hi all , I have a 2007 EX-L Odyssey 36,850miles. Juddering has been going on couple thousand miles ago. When I first noticed , I called dealership right away. They said its normal ??? I don’t think so. Juddering happens when driving around 20-35mph ,after it judders it kicks forward a little. That’s dangerous. Now it’s been happening more. I took it to the dealership today and I paid for the diagnostic fee and unfortunately it didn’t judder. Then when I drove home it happened. So I called the dealer and told them what happened , they asked me to drive back to the dealer. They diagnose again , it didn’t judder. My main concern is my 5th year is May 10,2012 Powertrain warranty will expires. What happens if this gets worse after my 5th year? Will Honda fix this problem and be liable for Parts and Labor ? Honda should replace the Torque Converter .Honda should be fair to their costumers. All our cars and lawn mower are Honda . If this doesn’t solve by Honda , it will be our last Honda.

I am so glad to see the letter from your office. I have 2005 Honda Odyssey, EXL model. I got so annoyed due to this vibrating and noise problem. I went to a dealer many times, and they were not sure what the cause was. They offered me to fix this and that with over $1000, but they didn’t guarantee to fix it. I didn’t like that offer, so I went to a local mechanic whom I already know to repair it. He was sure to fix the problem, but $600 was wasted.

  • Jeffrey Marquinez May 3, 2012, 12:02 pm

I too want to be part of this. Sad to hear Honda will not take care of their customers should something happen. There are alot of Odysseys on the road so indeed its a great vehicle. Let’s keep it that way.

I am all for it. My 2007 Odyssey has problem with the transmission (failed at 40K), brake and steering pump. The dealership I went to told me that Honda did not admit there was problem with the transmission because the warning light did not go on. Eventually the dealership did put in a new torque converter after many complaints and fights, but it still judders. The steering pump leaked for a long time and was replaced last year when the recall notice came out. The brake issue was never resolved even after many complaints. On one rainy day, I almost hit the car in front of mine because my odyssey glided forward even though I pressed the brake all the way. I called Honda manufacture customer service and urged them to look into the problem before an accident happens and someone gets hurt. I was told that this is not a manufacture defect but a wear and tear (even though the brake had just been replaced). Honda customer service manager’s exact words, “Call us back when something happen to you or your family.” The case is now closed. I am glad that there is a class lawsuit going on.

  • Cristie May 9, 2012, 10:43 am

I own a 2006 Honda Odyssey EXL which I bought used.
I’m also experiencing the same shuddering problem, especially when the van isn’t warmed up or when I first take off from a cold start.
I’m VERY dissapointed in Honda’s quality these days. We’ve owned many Honda’s that have been very reliable but after this (and a very strange loud vibrating sound coming from underneath the van) I don’t think I will purchase a HONDA again. Especially because they don’t want to do anything about these issues. Success has gone to Honda’s head because Honda’s typically sell themselves. That won’t be the case for long if Honda doesn’t get their act together. I’m thinking of getting a new Nissan minivan – I like the latest body style and appreciate their reliability.

  • Eric May 15, 2012, 2:41 am

This is a HUGE and legitimate problem. The Honda dealers know it, but don’t want to get stuck with the cost. I’ve had the torque converter replaced on my 2007 Ody, but the original problem persists and I’m concerned another repair will be required in the not distant future.

  • Mike May 16, 2012, 4:13 pm

I bought a new 2007 Odyssey and have had the computer flashed 2X and a new torque converter. The shudder still exists. As a drivetrain engineer in the automotive industry, I know this is a design issue. Honda needs to step up to the plate and replace all transmissions that fail with reported shutter issues free of charge. This is the last Honda I will buy. Just bought a Hyundai and at least they have a warranty to back the product.

  • Ann Kelly May 25, 2012, 9:29 am

    Re: 1999 Honda Odyssey EX
I had the transmission replaced, under warranty, from honda in 2004 with only 52,034 miles and now I am facing replacing the transmission again with the vehicle only having 110K aprproximate miles. There is a design flaw in this year and make and honda refuses to do anything about and I am extremely upset about it! Honda needs to be made accountable for the torque convertor problems and repair all transmissions on this year and make of vehicle. What can be done to make Honda stand behind its product?

Honda Odyssey Defective Torque Converter Class Action Lawsuit
    http://www.topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/1459-honda-odyssey-defective-torque-converter-class-action-lawsuit-
Honda has been hit with a federal class action lawsuit that claims its 2005-2009 Odyssey minivans have defective torque converters that make the vehicles “violently vibrate” at low speeds or on a grade, and then hesitate before violently accelerating like a slingshot.
The Honda Odyssey class action lawsuit claims American Honda Motor Company (NASDAQ: HMC) has known about the Odyssey’s defective torque converters since at least 2005, but has never corrected the problem and, in fact, has “actively concealed” the torque converter defect.
A torque converter transfers power from the engine to the transmission of an automatic transmission vehicle. In the defective Honda Odysseys, the defect causes the minivans to suddenly, and without warning, prevent the vehicles from accelerating or maintaining their speed.
“The torque converter defect affects the Class Vehicles’ ability to accelerate and decelerate under the driver’s control, as well as overall transmission performance. As a result of this defect, the Class Vehicles vibrate or judder while being driven typically at 20-45 mph or while being driven on an up or down grade. While the Class Vehicles violently vibrate or judder, the transmission slips causing the Class Vehicles to hesitate for an interval of time in its forward trajectory before abruptly and violently kicking forward with a sudden burst of acceleration akin to a slingshot effect,” the Honda Odyssey class action lawsuit states.
This presents a safety hazard to drivers and renders the vehicle “unreasonably dangerous,” the suit continues.
The Honda Odyssey torque converter class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all U.S. residents who purchased or leased a 2005 through 2009 Honda Odyssey. It is seeking damages for Class Members in addition to a Court order requiring Honda to halt sales of the Odyssey until the defective torque converters are repaired.

Bought a 2008 Honday Odyssey EX-L in Dec 2008. After a few days, noticed the steering wheel shaking while braking. Took to the dealer, who said that the front rotors were warped, and they resurfaced it. Now, at around 30000 miles, the steering wheel is shaking badly while braking at high speeds. Took to the same dealer again. They now want me to pay to fix the problem, and blaming it on our driving style.
Told the service tech that this was a problem that happened first right after we bought it, but he is still insisting on it being not covered under warranty. We have had other vehicles Nissan Quest, Toyota Corrola, which have run more than 200,000 miles but never had such problems.
In Dec 2008 complained to Honda CR, was told that they would contact me in 2 days but never got a call back. The Honda customer service has been abysmal at the best. Will never buy another Honda again, nor would recommend anyone to buy it.
I find many others having the same problem with their Honda Odyssey and similar experience with Dealer and Honda Customer (NO) Service.
My feeling is that this issue is going to be another one like that of Toyota Brakes, where they keep denying it until serious accidents occur, lives get lost …before any action is taken.

My wife’s van- I drove it and noticed that as I was pulling into a parking spot and I slowed to navigate into spot, the steering felt real heavy, like the power steering was not working at all. All of a sudden the steering eased up and was able to turn again. Initially my wife did not notice this (and she usually notices things that I miss). There was also a time of a week or two that there was noise also associated with this problem, like a whining noise. Brought the van in for a safety recall in May 2010-(Honda replaced brake reservoir that was causing air in brakes =spongy pedal). There was a service bulletin that said to change the power steering reservoir if brought in for steering problems. They also did a software update for the transmission (to fix erratic shift points). which I did also notice right when we got the van (Honda salesman told us that the van was “learning” our driving style and would smooth out eventually. We are leasing the van, by the way. The brakes are now good, and the transmission does shift better, but the power steering is still an issue. I now have 35,000 miles and will need to bring it back in for steering before warranty runs out. This is my first leased vehicle, and after getting burned twice by domestic vehicles, I was planning on turning it in when lease comes due 3/11, but found out I will lose $6 to $7K in equity. I will probably buy it, drive it for a year and trade it in. I do like the vehicle, but do not want to get burned again with many repairs!!

I started to notice a couple of months ago that I had little or no power steering in some parking situations. This is not my imagination because it requires all my strength to turn the wheel when backing out of a parking spot. One night I noticed a loud noise in the steering pump when this happened. So I took it to the dealer and they told me the steering pressure was fine and that they had a service bulliten on the reservoir and replaced it. Something was said about air leaking into the lines. They also drained and replaced all the fluid. It seemed good for about 2 weeks and now it is happening again, but because it only happens when parking, and then only some of the time, I don’t think they will witness the problem.

Honda Odyssey vibration class action suit
    http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f1085e1/413
Read with interest the class action against Honda. I fought for months and finally engaged Auto BBB (Better Business Bureau) and State’s Attorney’s office before Honda at the last minute finally relented and replaced transmisssion and torque converter on my 2009 Odyssey for the vibration problem referenced in the lawsuit. Honda kept claiming problem was a “characteristc” of the car and I would have to live with it. Wrong! I decided to fight. The problem was never disclosed nor admitted yet obviously exists. Right before I was going to go for arbitration Honda called and asked me to meet with a Regional service representative. I did and he acknowledged immediately the problem and authorized the replacement which supposedly the local dealer is prevented from doing. Even after the agreement Honda America stepped in and unsuccessfully tried to stop the agreed to repalcement. Even after replacement, the condition still exists although admittedly not as much. However, based on other customer feedback it appears the fix will not be permanent and is likely to reoccur. I should have refused their offer and just proceeded with arbitration which I’m sure I would have won and had my purchase price refunded. I’m fortunate that I have a 7 year extended warranty so it should help somewhat with resale but nevertehless the problem will still affect me and the ultimate price I am able to get for a defective auto. I have copies of the numerous letters I sent to Honda executives and a detailed log of all my attempts to get action taken. I was put through a classic stall job. Ignore the complaint and it will finally go away. I refused to go away. I logged 22 separate contacts on this issue and that was before Honda decided to take some action. I’d be happy to provide copies of everything I have to attorneys of record if they ask. Honda should be held accountable for failure to disclose the defect both before purchase and after as problems were noticed and experienced by owners.

  • Whit July 11, 2012, 11:45 am

I am the owner of a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L. The juddering started around 3,000 miles, but it was inconsistent and never seemed to occur when someone from the dealership drove it. Now, the juddering is more consistent between 30-40 mph and noticeably occurs when the ECO light comes on. At 136,000 miles (July 13, 2011) dealership noted “test drove, dia problem, torque converter shutter”…to which they said it would be between $2,000-$4,000 to repair. “You might as well just wait until it is a consistent problem (or it breaks) to have it repaired.” I just received a “warranty extension” to update the software (July 2012)…however, conveniently it will only extend to affected vehicles “8 years from the original date of purchase or 105,000 miles, whichever comes first.” So, just like others have posted, they strung me along until the warranty option has expired. I hope the class action lawsuit is successful and it covers all ages and mileages for vans affected. This van is no longer suitable for my young teenagers to drive long distances!! Honda is no longer at the top of my list!!

  • Gene U July 17, 2012, 11:09 am

I’m all for it. Still battling with Honda now. I can’t even get them to replace anything. They wanted to power flush tranny fluid. Everything in that lawsuit is exactly what my POS is doing. Lunging, shuddering, surging, everything. Even the highway speed, although it maintains the speed, the van surges. It was like she was driving my van. I am all for this!!!!!!!

  • M Y Z July 18, 2012, 8:04 pm

I have a 2008 Honda Odyssey (bought new). Over a year ago, I took the van to the dealer due to shuddering and vibration. They told me no problem was found. A few months ago, the problem got worse. I felt that I was driving on a bumpy road. Initially, I thought it was the tires, but the problem persisted even after the tires were replaced and realigned. My husband took it in again last month. Again, the dealer said they could find any problem and it was normal for the van to shudder. We also own a 1998 Mercury Villager. We have never had any issue like that. The only problems we have had with the van have been the normal wear and tear problems. I am taking the Odyssey in again next week. After reading all the posts here, I feel that I will face a tough battle. I am also signing in to join the class action suit.

    • M Y Z July 18, 2012, 8:06 pm

I meant “the dealer said they could NOT find any problem”. Sorry for the typo.

  • Paul July 22, 2012, 10:03 pm

Just recieved notice from Honda that it will update the software to solve the “Juddering” or reimburse owners for repairs to problems related to the torque converter. The problem is at 8 yrs or 105,000 miles whichever comes first you will have a lot of Odyssey owners that will fall outside of the warranty and will not have the problem fixed or given reimbursement. I believe that the warrantly number are established by Honda to minimize the cost to repair or resolve this DANGEROUS and COSTLY problem. I will be calling Honda to see if they will reimburse $2100 that I paid to get torque converter replaced being that I have a 2005 Odyssey that does not fall under the recall warranty. I am all for this lawsuit and hope we can get them to produce quality torque converters because in the end the dealers will only use certified parts and if Honda is still manufacturing and replacing parts with the same old crap -we will most likely revisit this same issue down the road….

  • Darrell July 26, 2012, 7:18 pm

I got the warranty extension letter for my 2005 Odyssey. I called for an appointment for the software update and talked to them about the 105,000 miles. I have almost 160,000 miles. I was told by the service department this is a recall and they would do the upgrade free. They did. The van does drive better at speeds between 20 and 40. Now I can feel when the transmission shift gears. The software update did help when excelerating but I still notice some vibration when braking.

    • Jon Dison July 26, 2012, 9:02 pm

If you have some vibration when braking, then get your rotors replaced.

  • Eden Nanci August 16, 2012, 11:21 am

Trying to find out how I can be a part of this class action. My car is having torque converter issues and I’m afraid to drive my kids around. I called the dealer service department and they said that there was no recall yet. Is that because its still in litigation? Are there any attorneys to talk to regarding this class action? And yes I’m going to go get my car fixed, I’m not waiting to make it safe to drive. Just wondering what my options are. Thanks.

  • Keith August 27, 2012, 10:45 am

Just brought my 2005 honda Odyssey to the dealer for the torque converter update which was recalled. I will update once I get it back today to see if the shuddering is gone.

The Plaintiff in this Class Action petitioned the district Court on May 25 to voluntarily DISMISS the case. That means that this lawsuit is DEAD.

Accordingly, all those seeking to join the suit, have no current action to join.

I am not aware of the details concerning “why” Initiative Legal Group rescinded the claim against American Honda.

    • DC November 4, 2013, 10:41 am

Where did you hear that the lawsuit was dismissed? Link to story?

  • Tom September 6, 2012, 3:49 pm

My wife’s 2001 Odyssey just started with “Check Engine” light at 93,000 over the past weekend. Went to AutoZone to see why, Code is P0740. Went to local Transmission shop and they tell me there is nothing to due but replace the transmission ( $ 2995) and possibly one or both mounts ($ 150). The replacement transmission is to have a 100K warranty though. Shop claims to do about (40) Honda/Acuras a month for same problem. Come home and do a little research on the internet and find I am one of probably thousands of consumers with similar issue. But for everything I’ve read, Honda does little or nothing. How can this be allowed to continue ? I thought there was protection for consumers against known inferior products ?! Sadly, I guess it’s easier for our government to look the other way and convince us to promote more foreign trade.

  • Angry Odyssey Owner September 6, 2012, 4:14 pm

I have a 2005 Odyssey that has developed a problem that seems to be in line with the torque converter problems others are having. At 50-65 mph, with slight acceleration, the car starts to shudder; when I let up on the gas it stops. Tires are new and have all been balanced. I am the original owner and have maintained the vehicle properly. Except for the lousy A/C system, rear motor mount going bad causing a low groan while driving, and now this torque converter problem, the van has been a decent vehicle 🙁 Waiting to get rid of it till I hear whether Honda will help with repairs….

  • Gabriel Muntean October 24, 2013, 4:36 pm

I have a 2005 odissey with 57000 miles and about six months i noticed a vibration over 40 mph only when I maintain the same speed. I’m afraid from what i’m reading that is the torque converter.

A Second Class Action Suit needs to be opened on behalf of those of us that have been abused by this terrible company. The transmissions replaced in the 1999 – 2003 Honda Odysseys are the same ones that were in them in the first place. The same owners that were affected by the first class action suit are basically the same ones affected AGAIN, AGAIN and AGAIN by the defective transmissions they received as “repaired” by Honda. This represents negligence by the company. This is serious and needs to be organized as such to get a suit started.

Has a decision been made as to whether Honda is responsible for the torque converter replacement? I have a 2005 Odyssey and want to know. Thank you.

I have a 2006 Honda Odyssey and have had the engine mounts replaced, Right CV joint, timing Belt, water pump and transmission flushed. Everything I should to maintain my vehicle to keep for a long period of time. Now I have a shudder at slow acceleration taking it to the Honda Dealership at a loss as to what it could be after having all the work done above also, tires and brakes checked, said it could be my torque converter!!! What is the latest on this class action lawsuit??? Thank you.

Same problem as all the comments above. Always felt a shudder at 45 mph, but experienced extreme vibrations during a weekend trip to the mountains. Called Honda to make an appointment for a software update (Honda warranty extension 12-029). Problem is that my vehicle is now 9 years old and over 105k miles. I never received a letter stating there is a warrantee extension! I hope a lawsuit will bring satisfaction to all those affected by deceptive practices of Honda. I want to say I will never buy Honda, but it seems cover-ups are the norm in the auto industry. This service bulletin is no coincident of pending litigation!

Noticed problem 1st year with our 2006 oddysey mild shuddering.
When we took it in we were told that it was normal.
Now at 120 k we have ignition light on and we are told that transmission needs to be replaced. Dealer is saying these things just happen.

I also have a 2006 Honda Odyssey EXL with 105,000 miles. I, seriously, addressed this shuddering a bout 15 momths ago. I was assured that it was not a safety issue and would cause no other damage to vehicle. I have relied on my dealership for many years and trust them deeply. I have owned 3 (or 4) Civics and 3 Honda Odysseys. Myr first two Odysseys were leased and the 2nd one I only had for a year due to changing up to EXL with more equipment. I am preparing to do 105,000 maintenance(timing belt and water pump) and brake? recall, but really would like the shuddering addressed too. With the maintenance and torque converter replacement costs that will probably exceed $2000, I am tempted to say NO THANKS, have the recall work done and SELL the vehicle. My family has driven many Hondas for many years. Family member has driven Accords for 200,000+ miles then passed to nephew and it still was running. With this Odyssey experience I may be inclined to ignore the CR-V as my downsize to a SUV from a van and tell Honda goodbye. I will miss my service advisor(Pat Campbell)at Fox Honda, Grand Rapids, MI, but there is only so much that she can she can do. We’ll see what happens when I take car in tomorrow

I purchased a 2006 Honda Odyssey touring and at around 50,000 miles my car starting making a jerking , hesitating sensation brought it into Honda since it was still under the extended warranty and they couldn’t find a problem and changed other things but after 3 weeks of my car being in service they finally figured it out it was the torque converter. they changed and no problem until 90,000 thousand miles and now the same problem. I called to ask about how long the new part was under warranty and was told one year which now its 18 months. They let me know to fix the problem now since the same part they fixed once is out of warranty it will cost me around $1847.00 . I am so disgusted and I don’t have that kind of money to replace. Honda should be responsible for this since not once but twice.

2005 EXL 125k same issue 30-45mph shudder, violently until I remove gas or press the button to move transmission into D3 mode which just makes the engine rev higher it seems. Good for around town if I remember to press the button. On the highway I have noticed the engines stays around 2k rpm but I can hear and feel the transmission shifting gears constantly up and down when on cruise control on a flat stretch of road. So HONDA has no fix? How can I get a new torque converter using the “goodwill” 50/50 method? Is there some contact method or do I just have to go to the dealership and complain like crazy until someone listens to me issues. I purchased this used, I had a 2011 odessey but lease ran out and purchased a 2005. Had it a year and now this, HONDA making bad products. SAD!

I’ve bought a used 2005 Honda Odyssey EX-L with super high mileage. I bought it with 189k miles. Used 5k to down my van and sign paperwork, with 3 months warranty, everything’s good.Drove home(2.5hrs), within half way home, my check engine light came on. Got home, plug in my OBD scanner amd pop up a cat-convertor malfunction. Took it back the next week and they took it to Honda to confirm. I’m happy the car lot honored the warranty. Replace all 3 cats and was good to go. Now my van got 220k miles and I started to notice the shudding when slowing going from 30-40mph. So now I have to save up and buy a reman torque converter. Unit is $500 at the local auto part store. I’m have to find the time to replace it. Its an easy fix, just need more then 1 person to do it.

Me and my wife purchased a 2006 Honda Odyssey brand new in February 2006 and within first three to four years had some issues with vibration and shaking took it in to dealership and they would tell us it was brake pads/rotors. They did replace pads once or twice but that never really fixed the problem completely. We were told by service manager after he rode with me on a test drive that it was normal. About a year ago my wife came home from work one day and told me she thought she felt like a slipping or slight shaking in the car and it was not the first time she had felt it. I do not drive it that much because I have my own vehicle but after she told me that when I did drive it I tried to see if I could feel what she was talking about but it would never do it when I was driving. Over the period of the next two to three months I would ask her if she felt it again and she would say yes but it was so intermittent that she could not pin point when it was going to do it. I really didn’t mention anything about it for a while but she would tell me periodically “I felt that shake again today.” About August 2014 she came home one day and told me she felt it again and it felt like it was getting worse. I asked her if it was getting more frequent and she said a little more than it was. I drove it to work for a week and once I did feel what felt like a quick shake of the engine but happened so fast I begin to wonder if I might have run over a rough place in the road I just wasn’t sure. We went on for a couple more months she told me she thought we need to get it checked because it was getting worse so again I drove it and sure enough coming home from work one evening I felt it and it was almost the same as I felt before but this time it lasted for about 7 or 8 seconds and to me it kind of felt like the engine quickly shook and stopped. I had a mechanic to check it out and he said it was the front motor mount so we replaced it and it did not correct the problem. I contacted him to let him know it was still doing the same thing and he checked it again and concluded the rear mount was bad. We decided at this point instead of putting out more money for a motor mount and it still may not fix the problem to get it checked at the local Honda dealership and they called me the next day and said the problem was the front motor mount because it was not a Honda mount and was not functioning properly. They replaced it with a HONDA mount and after we picked it up and 960.00 lighter in my wallet still had the same problem. Contacted the dealership talked to the business manager there and was told to bring it back in and they would give me a car to drive while they fix it. This time the service manager test drove it with me and did feel what it was doing and said immediately it was a shuddering coming from the Torque Converter so they would service the transmission and update the Torque Converter Software and that should take care of it. They did do this and we picked and it is not as bad but still has like what feels a slip in the transmission intermittently. Count us in on the complaint!!

  • Terry Brannon January 19, 2015, 5:40 am

Many of these complaints sound just like my experiences. Our 2006 Honda Odyssey has problems with transmission shuddering to sometimes feeling like the car is changing into another gear at 35 to 45 mph speed. Have had motor mount diagnosed as being bad and replaced (960.00) and software updated and same issue exist. Have always loved Honda automobiles and bragged on Hondas but unless Honda steps up to this one and make it good it will be the last one I own and will discourage anyone from buying a Honda … it is unacceptable!!!

Have 2012 odyssey exl..40k miles…judder and vibrates a d buzzes constantly but intermittently. ..reported to Honda s d dealer…they are aware of this and say it’s normal due to ECO feature…..an more miles driven more noticeable. …why wasn’t I told about this at time of sale that I could probably expect this type of performance. …if I had known this was a possibility I would NOT have purchased this vehicle….this is not right.

  • Karen kernet May 15, 2015, 8:48 pm

Have odyssey touring model. 2006. All services have been maintained by Honda dealers. Experiencing all of the problems as all others with the torque converter. Shudder judder and jerking thru the gears with acceleration and deceleration. Honda dealer wants $6000 to replace torque converter and 3motor mounts and if by the way, you should relace the lousy transmission before it breaks. They know it is going to break down. Car has 130000 miles on it.

  • Jeff Parker June 27, 2015, 8:11 pm

I think the motor mounts issue is a scam. I take it out of overdrive, press D3 button when around town and don’t have the shudder issue anymore in D3. Over 50mph just push the button like when on the highway. I plan to drive this car into the ground. I had a 2011 Odyssey lease and purchased a 2006 when the lease ran out because it was a solid car. Now with this shudder issue and no real fix. Honda has lost a customer after this 2006 dies. Sad Honda was the so reliable back in the 80s and 90s, Corp greed on this one I say!
