A $55 million dollar class action settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit against Cook County Illinois, alleging, among other things, that illegal strip searches were conducted at Cook County jail, according to a Cook County strip search class action settlement news report.
A reported 250,000 people who were jailed in Cook County from January 2004 to March 2009 may be eligible to file claims to receive payments under the class action settlement.

i just talked to a representative for the suit today, she said they recieved more claim forms than expected (around 300,000) so estimated payouts WILL be lower, not sure how much lower, and checks will be sent july 5th, no checks have been sent yet.
Maybe tank was in the class that was suppost to get $1000 and it got reduced because more people than expected applied for the lawsuit. The phone number with the automated recording states more people than expected filed suit and the checks have to be reduced accordingly So if $1000 gets reduced minus taxes tank might have recieved $737 out of the original estimate of $1000. Just a thought. Besides $737 seems like an odd number to make up I hope he’s telling the truth but we’ll soon find out if anybody else gets a check please let us know. Thank You.
Hello all….. I was sent a letter a couple of weeks ago saying that the check would be mailed out at the end of June. I am not a participant, I am a friend of someone who is in Cook County right now. He says the inmates are getting restless about not recieving their money yet. I dont live in Chicago, but it should not take any longer for me to get it here than it would take for people right there in Chicago. Hopefully it comes soon. I will post if I recieve it.

Tank is full of shit! I talked with someone from the Law Office and they said NO CHECKS have been sent and that they won’t send any out till at least JULY 5TH. When I said “At least” in surprise she admitted that most likely there will be several more delays..
They can play this game for months and months. You see what is really going on is that they are collecting interest on this money and 55 million can make millions in interest in just a few short months. Don’t expect a dime Until someone steps up with a court order to release this money(which legally should have been 90 days after March 1st.The day they received it).
I also found out that Double the number of people responded to the suit that was expected. So expect $300 for A class 2 and$ 400 for a class 1.

The claims period is over and you can longer get funds from this settlement due to the forms having to be completed and received by January 27, 2011. Maybe more publicity should have been done so everyone could have had an opportunity to fill out a form, but it is over now that the payments have been sent out.

But whatever, cook county jail just bought me a replacement touchscreen phone and a couple of xbox 360 games…. Wish i had of gotten a chance to testify about the intake process – people that did got anywhere from $10,000 – $60,000 for reliving the intake strip process in addition to the $515 in addition to any additional monies from the insurance companies.
Thanks for the money cook county! Class a misdemeanor that was thrown out due to insufficient evidence/witnesses and 3 weeks in Cook county jail got me $515. That would’ve been a week’s pay back around the time i got arrested i just started a new job. oh well.

I called the 800 number and was told to send back the original check and write void on it and then a replacement check will be issued. What if you never received your check and need a replacement check?
I never received a claim form ,but I did get a form to exclude myself from the case so will I get a check?

Did you fill out the form to exclude yourself from the settlement? If so, no you will not receive a check. They tricked you and if you signed a document there is nothing you can do because you agreed to be excluded from the settlement. They didn’t send you a claim form to receive any funds, instead, they sent you a form not to receive funds. That wasn’t right!
I didnt fill out the form so that I don’t exclude myself but I didnt receive a form to be included either.

That’s messed up because it’s past the deadline now. I downloaded the form from their website in December so my brother could fill it out and mail it back in time.

The claim forms had to be submitted by Jan. 27, 2011. So, there is nothing you can do to get in on the settlement now. I thought more people were aware of this lawsuit. Again, they tricked people and didn’t publicize it like they could have but are still saying lots more people sent in a claim form than they had anticipated.
I’m calling this morning at 8:30 to verify the check was mailed to the correct address. This check is for my brother and he is bugging me daily because others he knows has already received theirs.
Hi Bella This check is for my brother as well but when I try to call and check the status they tell me they cant talk to me because Im not the claimant. Let me know if they give you any info on your brothers check
I had my brother call himself and verify his information and the last four of his social security number. If your brother can’t call have a male that you know call and verify the information for you.
I just got off the phone with the lady on the 800 munber and she talking bout there was two diffrent forms mailed . One to exclude yourself from the lawsuite and one to file a claim, now I only received the form that exclude myself now how tricky is that shit. They Know damn well what they were doing and didn’t want to pay out all the moneies that owed to us. Now who do I speak to about this problem cause now I’m am pissed not so much that i didn’t get the check but the principal of the matter because how many other people may not even received a form and not got paid.
Just so that everyone knows, you can email them to verify that your check was mailed (they will also verify the amount, date, name, and address). This might save you 1/2 an hour on the phone, but it takes them around one business day to respond. The email address is email@cookcountystripsearch.com. No… I did not get my check yet, but the mail has not arrived today.

You are right! I emailed class counsel last Thursday and they verified the address that the check was sent to on yesterday. The representative that my brother spoke with said 65,000 checks were mailed out on one particular day, that lets me know that all checks for all claimants were not mailed by the 5th.
Nope… Mail just arrived, and no check. I DID get a letter that was sent from Florida just two days ago, but not the check that was supposedly sent on the 5th. Ridiculous…

Was that letter telling you what class you were in such as class 1 or class 2? My brother got a letter stating the correct class in May.
The letter that I got wasn’t related to this settlement, it was just meant to illustrate the fact that it doesn’t take more than 2-3 days for a letter to get from Florida to Chicago.
My brother spoke with a representative this morning and was told that his address is correct on file and to allow 7 to 10 days for the check to arrive and do not include Saturdays and Sundays. Please remember every single check was not mailed on July 5th. Checks are being sent out daily in large numbers.
Is your brother still in Cook County? I will see if I can find someone who can be him on the phone. I will also try the email thing suggested by Chipkin…Thanks…and by the way no check for me today either.
They specifically verified that they mailed my settlement on the 5th, so it sounds like they are lying to people about the mailing dates. I wonder if they had some sort of legal agreement that required them to mail it by the 5th.

I definitely know there is a lie about all checks being mailed on one particular day. The rep. said himself that 65,000 checks were mailed on one day and those claimants probably have recieved theirs. I believe checks are being sent out in large batches daily until they have sent them all out. They wanted people to shut up so when others began to receive checks they had a little more lee time to play with the other checks. I’m going to look at the date on the check for sure.
