Jersey City Residents File Class Action Lawsuit Against Honeywell and PPG Industries in New Jersey Superior Court Over Alleged Chromium Exposure.
A class action lawsuit was filed against Honeywell International, Inc. and PPG Industries, Inc. (collectively “Defendants”) in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Hudson County (styled Latreica Smith, Mattie Halley and Barry Wein v. Honeywell International, Inc. and PPG Industries, Inc.) alleging that cancer-causing hexavalent chromium was improperly disposed of in Jersey City, New Jersey by Honeywell International and PPG Industries as a by product of their chromium chemical production operations, exposing Jersey City residents and/or property to chrome ore processing residue (COPR) and related contamination, according to class action lawsuit news reports.
The Honeywell International & PPG Industries Jersey City chromium class action lawsuit complaint reportedly alleges that in September 2008, the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) determined that citizens of Jersey City in close proximity to chrome ore processing residue (COPR) waste sites had as high as a 17% increase in the incidence of lung cancer.
The Honeywell International & PPG Industries Jersey City chromium class action lawsuit complaint reportedly seeks, among other things, periodic medical screenings or medical monitoring for the early detection of cancer in exposed populations, including all citizens of Jersey City who live within 500 feet of a chromium waste site, money damages for landowners whose properties have been devalued and punitive damages.
Health problems related to hexavalent chromium reportedly include cancer, DNA damage, ulcertations, kidney damage and reproductive damage.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, in 2008, identified the list of properties contaminated by chromium waste, including chromium waste sites in Jersey City.
