Copyright Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Google By Visual Artists and Photographers Over Digital Images and Photographs

A class action lawsuit was filed against Google in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (Manhattan) (The American Society of Media Photographers Inc. v. Google Inc., Case No. 10-02977) alleging that Google’s plan to make digital copies of books will infringe copyrights on images and photographs that photographers, illustrators and other visual artists created, according to a class action news report.

The Google visual arts, images and photography copyright class action complaint reportedly seeks statutory damages of at least $30,000 for each visual work infringed and at least $150,000 for each work if the alleged infringement was done “willfully”
