LG Electronics Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over LG Electronics Refrigerator Light

LG Electronics Customer Files Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Against LG Electronics Over Interior Refrigerator Light That Allegedly Fails To Turn Off When The Doors Are Closed.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against LG Electronics USA, Inc. (“LG Electronics” or “LG” or “Defendant”) in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey (styled Connie Mclennan, Virginia Zontok, and Caryl Farrell v. LG Electronics USA, Inc., Case No. 2:33-av-00001) alleging, among other things, that LG Electronics sold certain refrigerators that contain a defect that results in the failure of the interior lights of the refrigerator to turn off when the refrigerator door is closed, which in turn prevents the machine from staying cool, allows food to spoil, leads to the burning and melting of parts of the refrigerator, including the area surrounding the interior lights, and presents a fire and/or burn hazard to consumers, according to class action lawsuit news reports.

The LG Electronics refrigerator light class action lawsuit reportedly alleges that the defect exists in “french door” refrigerator models, including model numbers LFC25760SW and LRFC22750ST.

The  LG Electronics refrigerator light class action lawsuit is reportedly brought on behalf of all persons or entities residing in the United States who own or have owned LG french-door refrigerator models LFC25760SW, LRFC22750ST and other models containing a defect that causes the interior lights of the refrigerator to stay on when the door is closed, unless otherwise excluded (the “Class”).

Please do the same for LG televisions. Based on what I’ve read online, there are a lot of people like me who purchased an LG flatscreen television (LCDs and plasma, all sizes) that after a few months ended up with an expensive tv that had no picture. My LG was less than 3 years old and out of warranty (of course). I am single, no one else uses the television, and I am rarely home. So my TV gets in a year’s use what most TVs get in a couple/three months. I am also a pastor, so my 23″ (the only TV in the house) was a big savings and big spend. But I knew, based on where cable television service was headed, that a digital LCD TV would soon be necessary. I chose an LG, for no other reason than I liked the picture values and the sound was good (I don’t have a sound system attached to my TV, just the TV). That was the beginning and end of my good experience with LG. I’ve spent money I didn’t have to spend to send my TV to Chicago for servicing only to get a phone report telling me it would cost more to fix than to buy new. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I got no where with LG. So, I am now back to my little 12″ 15-year-old analog. It’s all I have; it’s all I can afford right now. Not a pretty picture, is it?

We had 2 repairs of the main circuit board in the first year, then plastic parks break (door latches, vegetable bin shelf) and most recently the light bulb issue. Melted the plastic and the entire assembly is coming off the ceiling from melted screw holders. Received a letter about the lawsuite just a week after the light bulb failure, they will fix it but not all the other problems. Be bought an LG diswasher at the same time (2008) and it is now at the city dump where it belongs.

Bought anLG refrigerator and started having problems within six months after purchase. The lights get so hot my husband needed special gloves to take them out. We had spoiled food and a dark refrigerator. Looking for help with some compensation. Was a very expensive refrigerator

I have a LG french door refrigerator, purchased in 2006. We have had problems from the start – torn door gaskets twice, broken ice machine, cracked drawer stops. I woke this morning to the smell of burning plastic when I opened the refrigerator doors. The entire plastic cover of the light fixture was melted, the bulb sockets were scorched brown, and the ceiling above the lights was bubbled and melted. How can I get involved with this suit?

    • rebretta September 21, 2010, 10:25 pm

same problems here. Owned 3 years, replaced ice maker and wate valve. Drawer stops broken. Melted interior from lights staying on. Worst customer service ever.

    • Karin Hicklin October 22, 2010, 11:23 am

We had the same problems: plastic melted, bulb sockets were scorched brown. The icemaker broke just after one year. Everything is falling apart. We have it now for four years. It is a horrible product.

I wonder what is the model number on the fridge that caught fire?
Our lg dishwasher just caught my home on fire.

LG is a problem. There is no way to talk to CEO’s
I too was stung, by them and was still under warranty..
The wanted me to take back to store for a replacement. Easy (NO) the store did not carry LG any more, so nothing to replace it with. So I got my money back minus the shipping charges and 300$ to replace with unit from different store..
LG did not understand (repair or replace)
Too bad the head office is not listed to let them know what is going on..
Good to see some people taking the legal option

I can’t believe this…. I opened my refrigerator this morning and found a tupperware lid melted to the plactic cover over the light bulbs and everything in the fridge was bad. Had a service company out to the house who said it is not a common problem…………
I am sure that if I had not gotten up as early as I had this morning there would have been a fire!

  • Marie C. November 19, 2010, 12:54 pm

Our LG french door refrigerator is four years old and we have had the same experience as others. A few months ago, the light sockets and casing melted from overheating – luckily we weren’t on vacation when this happened. Within the first year the tops to the drawers broke off. I sent in a complaint to LG customer service about the fire hazard, but never received a response.

  • Theresa F. November 19, 2010, 4:03 pm

I purchsed my LG French door refrigerator, LFC25760SW in June of 20o7. I’ve had the ice maker replaced, and have had trouble with the rollers on the freezer. Also, the front of the vegetable bin broke off. Not happy about any of that, but when we woke up one morning this past summer, and the light wouldn’t turn off in the refrigerator, and all of the food on the top shelf was hot, I was really unhappy. The light had melted the unit, which was now hanging by the wires. Of course, not under warranty and no response from customer service. I’m glad to see where a class action lawsuit has been filed. Since this is not a fixable problem, I just hope we get a replacement out of it. So much for the 14 years it was supposed to last!

  • PAUL M. December 6, 2010, 9:20 am

Not just i the USA. We live in Canada with the nightmare known as the LRFC22750ST fRENCH DOOR FRIDGE.
The ice maker had to be replaced, chime for the freeze did not work,
Door clips broke (over$500 repair). Now the capper, interior lights would not go out yesterday, started smoking and melting the interoir of our fridge. So hot the socks the lights are in started metaling so could not remove just loosen til they went off. I know there is a class action suit in the states can Canadian join in !

    • Karen Floyd October 9, 2012, 11:59 am

We own the LG Model # LRFC22750ST French door refrigerator.,
Just before bed on Sunday, I went into the fridge to find the light housing, melting and smoking. The top part of the fridge contents were warm. .My husband tried to remove the lights but they were so hot, they exploded as he removed them. I count myself so lucky went into the fridge before bed as we had 10 people staying at our house, including very young children. This could have been a terrible tragedy. How do customers in Canada become involved in the class action suit?

  • Jill December 10, 2010, 3:53 pm

I want to know how to get a piece of that action! I have been reading hundreds of the same complaint. I was going to replace the lighting in the fridge but won’t now!! I only lost some money and food the first time around. The next time it could be the house!!

  • TA December 13, 2010, 6:12 pm

SO does anyone know what happened to this lawsuit?

  • michelle roschen December 26, 2010, 9:41 pm

I have a lg refridgerator model #lfc25760sb purchased in 2007 from best buy and i have the same problem. Woke up one morning and smelled plastic burning opened up the fridge and the light casing was hanging down from the top of the fridge.Tried to get the cover off to remove the bulbs but it was so hot that the whole piece came off from the top of the fridge. I unplugged the wiring for the temp. unit and the bulb sockets were scortched brown and the liner of the fridge is bubbled all i could think of was it could of burned the house down if knowone was home. Scarry thing to think of that a 3 year old fridge could have taken my childrens home away. I called lg customer service and they were very nice and sent a tech. out to my home and they are servicing it free of charge but after reading these posts i am sure the heat is on to repair some of these fridges. But now I am not sure I want to even keep this refridgerator in my home who knows how long before it’ll happen again and the next time I may not be so lucky and be home to minimize the damage. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET INVOLVED IN THIS CLASS ACTION SUITE? PLEASE EMAIL ME IF SO.

    • lynette Yost November 13, 2012, 11:42 pm

My fridge is on the blink, fan caught on fire and melted, vegetable draw broke not long after I bought it, the side of the fridge was getting very hot before it went out, had two technicians out and wasn’t exactly sure what the problem was and said we would be responsible for the part they ordered if it turned out to be something else, it cost us just to diagnose the problem. I looked up recalls on LG and saw there was a recall on our fridge.

  • Jeannine January 27, 2011, 3:49 pm

I own LG model LFC20760ST although it is not the model involved in the class action suite I plan to remove the light bulbs, that is as soon as it’s running. The refrigerator is 21 months old and the pcb board or main control has failed, after going to consumer affairs.com I learned that this part commonly fails within 1 to two years after purchase, of course LG will do nothing for you if it’s out of warranty. After reading the hundreds of complaints about LG refrigerators and the lack of response on the part of the company I would never, never buy anything made by LG. I’d like to hear from folks who have experienced this same issue perhaps a lawsuite for this issue should be considered.

hello,i lived in Canada and i am having the same experience with my lg refrigerator , a melt down from the lights ,dont know if the company will do anything , working on it now.

  • Eric Blackburn May 9, 2011, 9:29 am

I guess I’m an exception. I have an LG French door refrigerator, which was purchased in 2008. I experienced the “lights stay on, the control unit melts and falls off ” syndrome.

In researching my problem, I found this feed. As a result, I had a very negative outlook on my chances for success in dealing with LG. My experience with LG was completlely the opposite of the experiences related in this feed.

Being an optimist, I sent LG an email relating my story. I received a prompt email reply encouraging me to call their customer service number for resolution of my issues. I was told I needed to be in front of the unit when I called.

Standing in front of the ‘frige, I called the number. The call didn’t go through. Thinking I may have misdialed, I called again. The message I got was that it was not a working number.

I told you I was an optimist, right… I called again! I got Customer Service, and in a very reasonable amount of time I spoke with a rep. I was offered to have the unit repaired AND THE CAUSE CORRECTED the next morning. My schedule required us to wait 3 days. On the appointed day, the service guy arrived well within the 8am- noon window. Unfortunately, he arrived without the part. His explanation was that the parts come from Alabama (this is 3 days after the entire state was ravaged by 165 tornados). I guess they get a “pass” on not having the parts.

The repairman offered to call me when the parts came in and arrange to meet me IN THE EVENING, at my convenience. Three days later, I got the call, met him after work, and in less than 30minutes the repair AND the correction of the flaw in the board that caused the problem was completed by a couple of very pleasant technicians! Even though I was well out of warranty, there was NO CHARGE for parts or labor!

    Score one for the optimists!

    • S July 5, 2011, 9:49 am

We too had “luck” with customer service, after our light melted the entire temp/light unit. They’re coming in 2 days to fix it. I have to agree with other posts– this should be a recall on LG’s part. Clearly, this is a common defect.
We also had a problem with our freezer a few years ago, right after we bought it. The freezer was “over freezing” everything. Huge chunks of ice everywhere. I went round and round with LG for months (it was still under warranty at the time) it took 3 different attempts at fixing it until the last repair tech admitted that the company now knew it was a defect and he replaced the computer board.
There are lots of problems with this refrigerator, sadly.
It takes a while for LG to admit to their problems but it seems as soon as enough complaints come in they try to fix the issue.
Just wanted to say that for those of you who haven’t attempted to call their customer service, you should try. They are well aware of the light/melting problem and will “extend” your warranty parts and labor.
      Good luck.

    • Brieanne November 1, 2011, 10:47 am

Ours was also repaired free of charge. Then it happened again!!! And when I called to get it repaired again, I found out LG decided not to pay the repair company the first time.

  • Mike Brisendine June 2, 2011, 9:03 pm

We have the LG LRFC22750TT and just experienced this issue. The lights were on with the doors closed. The lights melted the plastic cover and got hot enough to darken the light sockets themselves. The whole frame and light assembly got so hot that the screw mounts melted and the whole assembly had fallen inside the refrigerator hanging by the wires.

  • Matthew Vallance June 4, 2011, 3:35 pm

We have the famous LG fridge model LFC2750 as well. Same problem lights don’t go off and melted the light cover. Top shelf food spoiled and the fire hazard as well. We live in Canada so not sure what happens about that. Called Trail appliances as we have 4 hear extended warranty on the unit. Will see if they fix it. Anyone know what LG is doing about the problem in Canada?

  • Jim June 5, 2011, 8:09 pm

We have had our french door fiasco for four years. A year ago, the fridge turned into a toaster… we called, they had it “fixed”. 6 months later, the lights in the freezer stopped working…. they wouldnt do anything about it. Just last night, the lights in the freezer started working again, then 20 minutes later, the whole fridge stopped working, and the “door is open” alarm started going off… with the DOORS closed! 24 hours of dealing with that non-sense, and we have ordered a GE, but will be getting involved in this lawsuit. I hope our washer, dryer and flat screen last longer!

  • Eileen Siple June 21, 2011, 5:47 pm

How do I get involved with this lawsuit? I also have an LG refrigerator, and have had a problem with ice forming under the freezer drawer. Then today, I noticed a smell of burning plastic, and when I opened the door, found all of the food on the top shelf was hot, and everything else was warm. All of the food needed to be thrown away. The light bulbs were so hot that they burned and warped the plastic housing – when I tried to remove it, the screws pulled right through. This could have burned down my entire house.

I spoke with LG, and they rudely agreed to come fix the problem (in a little bit more than a week). They advised me to remove the light bulbs, and assured me that the problem would not have started a fire. When I asked why they were not informing consumers that this is a potential problem, the response was because ALL consumers are not having a problem, and there has been no recall issued. Outrageous! Does someone need to die in a house fire before they take this seriously? I paid $2500 for this refrigerator. I wish I had just gotten a cheaper model from a more reputable company.

  • Mike Bush July 6, 2011, 7:30 pm

I have a model #LFX25960 and when I opened the door this morning everything on the top shelf was hot and the lights were on with the door closed. The light sockets are brown from heat, the light cover is melted as is above the lights. I am glad I was home and not out of town as I travel allot. This is the first problem with the refrigator. It just came off warrenty this month. I have an LG dishwasher I have had to replace 4 motors, 3 circuit boards, 2 pumps and several other components in 4 years. I will never buy anything that has LG on it. The company is trash as is their products.

  • Brandon Nutting July 11, 2011, 7:12 pm

Came home from dinner and half of the items in my fridge had melted. Realized the light was staying on and was too hot to touch. The entire fixture had melted. I managed to get it out and unplug it. A few more hours and it would definitely have been a fire.

Unbelievable. I can post pictures of my fixture but they look just like other pictures that have been posted after a quick Google search.

  • Andrew Cookson July 11, 2011, 11:59 pm

I got on to see if anybody else had the same problem and how to fix it, I was shoked to see that everybody has had the same problem. It seems the only thing to do now is throw away the hot food on the top shelf and keep the lights unplugged until I can buy a new fridge. The only saving grace is that the appliance was in the home when we purchased it. Ifeel for those of you who dumped there hard earned money on one of these overpriced ornemants. It seems almost criminal that LG will not recall a product that could be potentialy dangerous. I am glad I checked before I started throwing money at it. Thanks to all who took the time to provide a warning to the rest.

  • Laura Teasley July 16, 2011, 4:26 am

Same thing happened to us yesterday. Thank goodness we were home when I discovered it – did you all read the post from the person in Southeast Asia who went away on a two week vacation and returned to a burnt down kitchen and living room and smoke damage in the rest of what was left of his home – thanks to the LG french door fridge lighting system malfunctioning? YIKES!

This could have killed our 3 pugs had I not discovered it yesterday morning.

Same as all the other posts – opened fridge, smelled smoke, looked up, saw the melted parts and felt the heat and hit the panic. Threw out the spoiling very very warm food, turned off the fridge and a neighbor took out the light bulbs.

Well it seems that this overheating/light fixture problem is more common than LG cares to admit, which is horrifying to me as we bought two (2!) units. I now am viewing our other unit as a potential time bomb.

I think we now are facing buying two new fridges….

    …..in these economic times!

And yes, the ice maker in the bottom drawer of the second fridge has never worked.

    • Laura Teasley January 22, 2012, 5:04 am

      Update!

Class action suit by some Texas Law Firm not being pursued by firm.

I emailed LG itself and within a week, our fridge was repaired at no charge.

Let’s see if this holds, or if our other (same model) fridge melts…..

      Fingers crossed…..

  • bjd July 19, 2011, 12:45 pm

We purchased our fridge in Aug 2007. The icemaker began intermittently working 1 month out of warranty. I did not bother calling about the icemaker as I have heard their reputation for CS is horrific. Our daughter has had to deal with LG twice. She, nor we, will ever purchase an LG product again. The icemaker has begun working again, for which we are glad. Go figure. We noticed last week an electrical smell coming from inside- we couldnt figure it out. Four days ago- same thing, this time, the cover fell off the light housing exposing the melted plastic and burned light sockets. It was so hot that the food under the light was too hot to touch and we needed pot holders to touch anything and to get the bulbs unscrewed. I was able to push the melted plastic back up but it is so damaged from the heat. I am so glad we discovered this as Im sure it would have caught fire at some point, and we were headed out for vacation.

I have contacted LG- they informed me there is absolutely no recall- but they will replace/repair for no charge.

  • Cristine July 29, 2011, 4:28 pm

We had the same problem with our LG fridge LFX219660ST … the easy bake oven fridge! Perhaps an innovative idea if it couldn’t burn your house down! We are in Canada and would love to get in on the lawsuit. Does anyone know if it’s possible? I called LG and they told me to deal with where I bought it (Sears) who said it wasn’t THEIR problem etc. etc. Eventually it was fixed (after a lot of yelling) – but I am disgusted that LG has not recalled this fridge – unfortunately it will probably take someone’s house burning down for them to do something about it. I do not want to deal with a company that does not take the safety of families as a priority!

  • Virginia August 9, 2011, 9:27 am

I bought a LG window air conditioner last year (May,2010), the warranty on the a/c is 5 years. The a/c needed freon because it had a leak. I called LG and they told me that because my a/c was not installed in a window, that my warranty was void. I had the a/c installed in what was once a bay window, but to them, this is not considered a window, so they voided my warranty. This is unfair and unjust. They do not honor their warranties, and their management is very incompetent.

  • Bruce August 19, 2011, 4:45 pm

    08/18/2011
We smelled something burning in the kitchen, our LG ref melted the interior lights as the lights will not go off.

  • Leslie Kelly September 14, 2011, 12:56 pm

My LG lights just melted and scorched the sockets. I am so glad I read this site and want to know how to join the class action suit! This is nonsense and crazy.

  • Rick September 19, 2011, 10:37 am

I have had the LFC25760ST for three-four years. The only problem I have had until recently is was that the ice cube tray would fill too full and ice cubes fall on the floor.
This past weekend the door lights would be out when I’d open the doors. The next time I would open the door the lights would be on and the food on the top shelf was cooking. I removed the bulbs.
I would not buy an LG again because of the cheap plastic used in the door panels. Stains easily and can’t be cleaned.

  • Debbie Defosse October 17, 2011, 7:06 pm

We bought a LG French door bottom freezer in 3/2011, came down on Labor day and the freezer was completely defrosted. Finally when the tech came out a number of things needed to be replaced, the gasket on the freezer door both of the arms on the drawer, the light fixture. After a month and waiting for the parts the tech came to our house but could not fix it because the gasket that was sent was all tangled and they need to have that replaced, so I have not had use of a freezer for 6 wks. Who do I contact about the class action suit?

  • Leta Hensen November 9, 2011, 11:39 am

I have the LG model #LRFD22850 refrigerator, 2005, where the light stayed on, heated up the refrigerator, removed the left bulb, right one is ok. It melted the cover so that does not fit.
Now I have one bulb working, one bulb removed, and no cover. It happened after warrantee so I left it this way. I will proceed to get it fixed and ask for a reimbursement.

  • LeAnn Severson November 10, 2011, 7:23 pm

I knew it was not just my Refrigerator. I never got any answers, from anyone? Sears, told me to call the 1800 number, and because I didn’t buy a extra warranty i was out of luck. We had to pull that light out and never put another one in since 2008. My house could have caught fire, if I wasn’t there that weekend. I lost all kinds of food and just lucky no one became sick from the spoiled food. It was a rainy dark day, and the kitchen was dark, but as I was sitting near by talking on the phone, I saw a light from the frig. and it was down hill from there. it was so upsetting to say the least. I say good job, for addressing this situation to LG. they owe the people “NEW” refrigerators! Sincerely, LeAnn Severson

  • Kathy November 21, 2011, 5:54 pm

We purchased the LG refrigerator and of course the plastic housing that holds the light melted. We rec’d a claims form, but have misplaced the information.

HELP!!! If anyone can tell us where to get another claim form or the website we can go to, please let us know. I would really like to get our refrigerator repaired.

    Thanks, Kathy

  • JT November 28, 2011, 12:54 pm

I am a 10+ year appliance tech servicing LG appliances for more than 5 years. Yes, the light issue is a problem, but like stated in other comments, LG is owning up to it. They have redesigned the light section which includes adding a small tstat so if it does ever overheat again, it shuts down the lights. Replacing all free of charge as well. Alot more than some of these other companies are doing. I have all LG appliances in my house and would not own anything else!!!

  • Norm Huber January 15, 2012, 7:31 am

Melted lights, fire, replaced bulbs with small night lights; food freezes: paid $2500 for this piece of dangerous junk. Sears Kenmor made by LG; Sears would do nothingand LG would do nothing:

  • Linda Miller January 15, 2012, 6:34 pm

how do i get on the class action law suit my lg light is now staying on melted the plastic around it it is a fire hazard. thank you ,Linda

  • Williams February 11, 2012, 1:04 pm

These LG products are completely trash from what I’m reading in ALL of these complaints. I as well have a LG fridge that had the same problems plussss. We never received any notification about this light situation either. I just so happen to thane smelt a burning smell for about a week or so. But seemed like every time that I opened up the fridge I couldn’t pinpoint the problem. Until everything started to feel warm only top shelf n throughout the entire refrigerator. So I open my doors and manually pushed both buttons in the corners to see if the lights would go off. Because I noticed the plastic around the fixture taking another shape. And to my surprise NO the light did not go off at all. Spoke to customer service and an appointment was made for a tech to come out. It was the tech to tell me about the DEFECT not customer service like they didn’t know about this TRASH that cost close to 3000. So it took about a month for us to receive the part because it was on back order. So me just hearing that let me know this wasn’t a good thing. We also had to throw away a lot of food due to it being spoiled. Btw did I mention our doors clips had broken off about 2 years before that. That should have been a sign about the quality rite there. Long story short after the serviceman installed the new part for the lights a month n a half later I started noticing things still weren’t keeping cool like they should. I was told the seal would need to be replaced and the fridge wasn’t under warranty. I explain that it should be covered under that light defect they said no it’s not. If the fridge is now acting like an oven the seals will b damage from the heat inside the fridge. The seals are meant to keep COLD air in not HOT HEAT. Then the following week my ice maker stops making ice. Come to find out my compressor is not working anymore. Which also burnt out due to the extreme heat in the fridge off n on because we weren’t told anything about it or sent any notification. I told there customer service that the constant heat in the fridge burnt out my compressor. Because your compressor isn’t meant to run constant like that. It’s meant to turn on tho cool off the fridge n shut off after it has done it job. So in the case of the high constant temps it was continuously running to cool off a fridge temp that it would never be able to maintain. But they don’t think it’s there fault and now I’m told that it’s 1000 for a new 1. LG can go straight to he’ll (excuse my expression). So the want me to pay 1000 for a compressor, 500 for door clips and also replace the seals around both freezer n fridge part all damaged from this extreme heat that was burning up everything inside n around the fridge. There has to be a better way because I’m not paying them anything. My fridge is out of warranty yes but ALL these problems are due to there heat issue with those lights n those defective pieces. Thy need to give people longer warranties on the TRASH…..

I have pages of notes from speaking with LG customer service a couple of weeks after my fridge was delivered. They refused to do ANYTHING…all conversations written down. I even went back to Best Buy to see if they would take back the appliance and was told ONLY if I had purchased the EXTENDED warranty. THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY was still in effect. I have boycotted LG & Best Buy since this fiasco. Then again, after spending almost $3k on the fridge I really didn’t have too much on hand to do a lot of purchasing.

  • Ann February 24, 2012, 3:50 pm

I’ve had problems from the beginning with my LG French door fridge and nothing but blow offs from LG and Best Buy where it was purchased. So, when my interior light melted off I didn’t even try to complain. Is it possible to still get involved with the class action lawsuit?

    • kathy June 22, 2012, 1:07 am

Our fridge model # LFX25960 ST also had the same problem last night. Woke up to a melted mess, all of our food was hot and spoiled on the top shelf, the bulbs were on all night & scorched. It’s only 6 years old! I’ve had other models that have lasted over 20 years! LG sells crap!

  • Susan March 8, 2012, 8:14 am

I became aware of my problems with the LG French door refrigerator, which was purchased Dec. 3, 2007, in late June of 2011. Since then I have been given the runaround by Sears and Sears Holdings and then referred to LG, the manufacturer of this refrigerator. Although the refrigerator looks good, it is a piece of junk. The gasket around the door has rotted out, the waterline from the refrigerator has leaked twice causing the family room floor considerable damage. The latest is that LG has requested that I send them the defective waterline and coupler. It continues to go on and on. Any advice? Am I able to be part of this class action lawsuit?

    • Vicki June 4, 2012, 8:58 am

I bought the french door frig in Jan. 2008. Within 6 months the freezer compartment was developing an unusal amount of frost. It was replaced with the same model. Within days we had a problem with the ice and water. Technician found small pieces of styofoam packed in the icemaker componets and the water lines. The door with the icemaker was replaced. The door gaskets have been replaced three times. As of today, THIRTEEN SERVICE CALLS have been made because the water tubing continously developes pinholes. It has destroyed my hardwood floors.
Five thousand dollars for an entire kitchen of LG appliances and even the stove has one burner we have had to completely disconnect because it will not turn off.
I will NEVER EVER buy anything LG AGAIN!

My wife woke up this morning to find the fridge completely hot, the food spoiled, and the plastic covering over the light laying on the top shelf of the fridge. I had to remove the bulbs to get the light to turn off so I am having the same problem everyone else is having. The worst part is that we had $2,500 worth of medication on the top shelf of the fridge which is completely ruined. If anyone knows how to contact the class action law suit firm please let me know ASAP.

  • Mark bachert April 21, 2012, 8:37 am

Just like mentioned above. Went into refrigerator this am to find melted cover and lights that would not turn off. Removed melted cover and loosened lights. Temporary fix to as it seems a common problem!

  • Jack M April 28, 2012, 2:51 pm

Same proble here. On morning went into the LG to find the housing light melted, food spoiled and the smell of a fire. I removed the lights and prior being notifed of the lawsuit had two service companys out. Neither could figure out the problem. One told me I needed a new mother board, cost about $400. The other told me to try new switches. I replaced the door switches and housing and thought the problem was solved. I got normal use again for about a year when the lights malfunctioned AGAIN!!! This time the oppisite. Now the dam lights won’t come on. Last LG appliance in this house.

  • Fran Miller May 19, 2012, 4:56 pm

We have the light problem as well and just months ago replaced the cover for the lights as they had melted. Just noticed today it is melted AGAIN! Light sockets are scorched a light brown color. Ice maker has been a nightmare from the beginning, ice falling out the back of the ice maker and collecting on the floor of the freezer. Of course when we checked our warranty was out. We will never buy another LG refrigerator. LG is supposed to mean “Life is Good ” but our experience has been far from good.

My Lg refrigerator has stop freezing the food in the freezer, making ice and the food in the fridge spoils way to fast!. This fridge is only five years old. I would like to get in on this class action law suit.

  • Morgan August 13, 2012, 3:10 pm

Well now it’s LG’s dishwashers that are a piece of Cr–p. Tell everyone to stop purchasing any of their products. We need to get the word out to all distributes such as Home Depot to no longer carry their products and have consumer groups put them on their beware list. It’s time to shut them down

  • Diana August 16, 2012, 4:27 am

I have had my LG refrigerator for 5years and until 2days ago, had no problems and love it. However, all of a sudden the lights didn’t go on with the door open. I came home today from a trip and discovered the temperature gauge on the door showed 97degrees although my kitchen was 75. After researching, I found the information on the class action settlement that occurred in March of this year. The deadline to file a claim is November, 2012 for repairs or food loss prior to Nov., 2011. LG will also extend the warranty for 10 yrs. Like Diana, I’ve had my 3 door refrigerator for 5 years. I have had some issues with it like temerature control and drawers breaking, but I didn’t realize it was an inferno waiting to happen. Last night I came home from work and opened the doors. The control unit was blazing hot and starting to separate from the ceiling. I hate to think what would have happened in a few hours. I am waiting to get a service appointment and was informed that there was a recall on this. Now I will look into this lawsuit as I want to be involved. Wish I could afford to send this piece of crap to the dump right now.

  • Kathy September 22, 2012, 10:38 am

Now I’m scared–bought the LG 21760ST in 12/07–since then the lights in the fridge have been going out intermittently. We found out that they seem to go out because they stay on with the doors closed & they probably over-heat. It happened again today but we smelled plastic burning. Nothing has happened (except the lights go on &off as they please) but after reading other posts, I’m going to remove the bulbs asap & call or email LG on Monday. Reading that the problem happens even after repair is also frightening.

I have one of the LG french door refrigerators that I purchased at Sears under the Kenmore name. I had no idea it was made by LG, Sears usually used Whirlpool. I purchased it in 2006 and about 3 years later I opened it and the plastic cover was starting to melt and the top piece was hanging down. My nephew screwed the top piece back in, and I changed the bulbs to less wattage. It hasn’t had a problem since. I can see that I was taking a chance of not calling Sears then.

So in addition to that I can’t one door without the other opening. Very annoying. I finally decided to call and I got a contract for a year for about $235 which covers up to $500 in repairs. The repairwoman came out and ordered the gaskets along with a new light socket and cover. The bill would have been about $400 . I don’t know if I can still join the class action lawsuit because I’m fixing it under contract.

I purchased an LG LCD/LED flat-screen television in January 2012. In late June or early July the television stopped turning on. I contacted LG and a service contractor was dispatched to repair the television. It was approximately a week between when the television broke and I contacted LG and when it was repaired.

During the week of October 1st through October 5th the television broke again (the brightness level began flickering and an intermittent blue bar, approximately 1/5th the width of the screen, appeared vertically down the side of the screen and I do not recall exactly which day the problem started). I again contacted LG and again a service contractor was dispatched to repair the television. The service technicians arrived on October 10th, at approximately 1pm, and again repaired the television.

Shortly after they left I found that the television would go blank after it had been on for a while. The length for which the picture would remain on varied, but it seemed to last longer if the television had been turned off for a while. The blue light in the lower right-hand corner remained on (it didn’t turn to red) so the television was on, but there was no picture or sound. I called the service contractor who stated they would need to order a part (the contractor returned and tried to fix it with what they have but the problem remained). I then contacted LG to report the problem in order to make sure it was documented and to find out exactly how many times I would have to go through this before LG would admit they sold me a defective television and send me a new one.

I found my experience dealing with LG’s customer service to be extremely frustrating. The representative who I initially spoke with, Mary, was unable to assist me so I asked to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor I spoke with, whose name I cannot recall, seemed to be determined to do anything except assist me. I asked her how long this was going to go on, how many times I was going to have to go through the aggravation and inconvenience of having my television broken before LG would take responsibility for the lemon it sold me. The supervisor seemed determined to place the blame on anyone except LG (me, the service contractor, the retailer, Amazon), anyone except the company who actually manufactured the defective product. She kept insisting (in a deliberately obtuse manner) that she “cannot predict the future.” I wasn’t asking her to predict the future, I was asking her how much aggravation and inconvenience I would have to go through before LG would provide me with the product I paid for: a functioning television.

Since the first supervisor seemed to be deliberately refusing to assist me, I hung up and waited a couple of hours so that I would not be furious when I tried again. Once I had calmed down I called back to LG’s customer service phone number and asked to speak with a supervisor. I spoke with Candace who was just as unhelpful as the first supervisor I spoke with. I asked Candace to have the part that the service contractor needed shipped overnight, so that they would be able to return and fix my television the next day, October 11th. Candace refused and again attempted to shift responsibility for rectifying this problem to anyone other than her. She stated that shipping was between the service contractor and the parts department, and when I asked her to contact either or both to ensure that the part would be here the next day she refused. I asked her to connect me with the parts department, so that I could speak with them about having the part shipped overnight, and again she refused. She informed me that the parts department does not converse with anyone as unimportant as the consumer.

I then wrote a letter to LG explaining the situation and how upset and frustrated I am by it. In response they sent me several “canned,” form-letter type responses that did not help, in any way, in resolving the problem. I called the service contractor on the Monday following the most recent breakdown, October 15th, to see if they had even received the part and they had not. They contacted LG’s parts department and were informed that the part had been shipped “recently” and did not have a tracking number. Since they ordered the part on the previous Wednesday I do not know why it would only have been shipped “recently” on Monday, six days later.

I continued to write to LG, requesting that my letter be forwarded to someone in a position of authority, and was continually assured by the customer service team that no one in authority is interested in resolving this problem, so they would not bother them with my letter. I was, after a week of back and forth correspondence, eventually offered a 3 month extension of my warranty. When I responded that, at the very least, considering all of the time I have spent and inconvenience I have been put to as the result of their having sold a defective product (and the fact that I no longer have any faith, what-so-ever, that this lemon will continue working for more than a few months at a time) I would like them to extend my warranty for a full year I was told that they couldn’t possibly extend my warranty by a year because they don’t offer extended warranties. So they can extend the warranty by three months, even though they don’t offer extended warranties, but not by a year, interesting.

I am now stuck with a lemon of a television that I expect to start throwing sparks or performing some other interesting trick at any time, and which LG refuses to replace. All-in-all, LG’s response to this matter has been terrible. If you are planning on purchasing any electronics in the near future I would strongly advise you to avoid LG products at all costs. The frustration you will experience and the time you will spend trying to get your product to work will not be worth it in the long run, I can tell you this from personal experience. LG’s complete and total refusal to accept responsibility for their products is maddening.

I purchased my LG French door refrigerator on Aug 29,2008. First of all the door gaskets didn’t keep the doors closed, and broke shortly after purchase. The ice maker also failed within the first year. I have resorted to buying bagged ice. I came home one evening and immediately smelled an electrical fire or smoldering going on. The smell was quite strong. When I opened the doors the light assembly was melted almost completely off the ceiling. It was hanging by plastic melted threads that used to hold screws. I thought I would close the door so the light would go off and cool down, but all of my food on the top two shelves , and the top shelves in the doors was warm, in fact the butter was melted through the box it came in (what a mess). Also the light was staying on even when the door was closed ( I could see it through the rubber gasket that supposedly seals the doors). The outside of the door was a little warm too. I turned the power off, got some gloves and tried to remove the lightbulbs but they wouldn’t move. So I had to finish unscrewing the remaining screw that had the melted plastic on it. When I removed the fixture I was surprised to see the ceiling burned, melted and bubbly. I threw away the spoiled food and looked online for a phone number for LG and found all of these complaints and lawsuits! Of course my refrigerator did all of this on Nov 25, 2012. Not quite a month after the ending date to file a claim by, and one month before Christmas. What am I to do? I cannot possibly buy a new refrigerator, and I don’t even have the money to get it fixed.. Thanks in advance for helping me with this problem your product has given me.

  • Ryan February 2, 2013, 11:30 am

Ha, I have a LFC25760SW with the exact same problem.

I know I’ll never be able to be a part of this law suit so I’m probably just going to replace the light and control housing myself, and convert my incandescent lights to LED so if it doesn’t turn the lights out again, it won’t melt everything off.

Guess I’ll go with GE or Samsung for my next ‘fridge.

I bought a LG dishwasher on 10/22/12 & after immediate use it smelled like a dirty baby diaper. I called the company & complained to Home Depot & Home Depot said they have to send a technician for repair. I told them this was ridiculous to have technician on the second day of installation. They said I could not return, but to call LG & their rep & LG technician will be at home to check the unit. Then I called again & LG said they get complains of dirty diaper smell, burning smell, etc & to let the machine have at least 25 wash & the smell will disappear & it did not. Then I was told to put vinegar & I did. I was told to change the detergent & I did. I have water softener for the entire house & that excuse could not fly to tell me I had hard water. Finally, they scheduled a technician & because I did not have my bill of purchase, they rescheduled & today when the guy came after months & months, he suggested again list of instructions & detergents. Is there any lawsuit against Home Depot or LG that I could join?

I just had a repairman out today for my LG fridge model LFC25760SB. He advised me of this class action suit and recall. The light unit completely melted and it smelled like it was burning inside. The lights would not go off. Appliance came with home when I purchased it. Please let me know what to do.

  • Bill Moy September 18, 2013, 12:14 pm

All I can say is “WOW!”

I had bought an LG LRFC22750ST and LSC5622WS fridge/stove set in Feb 2006. Back then, LG came with 2-year warranties before they changed it to 1 year (Hmmm – I wonder why?).

    Since then:

    Stove:
    – Replaced 4 elements (2 under warranty)
    – Replaced 1 computer board (warranty)
    – Now one of the elements will turn on but I cannot decrease the temperature, so this one works only on ‘H’IGH .
    – One element displays ‘HS’ at all times – even overnight.

    – The last tech-replaced element burned out in 8 months (or so I thought). I called again for service and LG sent a “courtesy repairman” – no charge. He brought an element but when he plugged it in, it was still not working. He then noticed that the wire was the problem – it had been pinched when the last tech closed the stovetop after changing the element and over time the friction eroded the wire and it finally shorted out! He fixed the wire but would not replace or leave the element.

Seeing the techs take apart the fridge enough times, I changed the last 2 elements myself – saved myself about $80 each time.

    Fridge:

    – Had the light assembly melting issue for the first time about 2 years ago. Blamed the kids for not closing the door! Oops! Threw out the light cover, re-tightened the attaching screws and thought nothing more about it.

Yesterday morning, my wife told me that the inside of the fridge was hot and that the light had separated from the ceiling. I pressed on the door sensors and the lights would not go off. I removed the bulbs and the fridge is now without light but at least the fridge is cold again.

This along with the other issues I’ve had – torn door seal, broken top door clips and the crisper frame that I replaced 2 weeks earlier!

I called LG and was ready to tear a strip off the back of the poor CSR that would be unlucky enough to answer my call and deny me any free service. Much to my surprise, he said “I will correct the problem” and put me on hold. 3 minutes later, came back and told me that a service tech would be here in 2 days to replace the whole assembly – no charge! – ARRGH! I was looking for a fight!!

Anyways, I will never buy another LG product! I’m pretty sure ‘LG’ stands for ‘Like Garbage!’

    • Bill Moy September 18, 2013, 12:15 pm

By the way – I’m in Montreal, QC Canada.

      • Bill Moy January 7, 2014, 9:23 am

So they replaced the light assembly on October 1st. Over the Christmas holidays, I had a few sporadic instances where I would open the door and the light would remain unlit. Closed and reopened the door and nothing happened. Closed the door and reopened 20 minutes later and the light came on. Since I had a 3 month warranty on the repair, I called the authorized service company who did the replacement on Jan 6th and they said I would have to open a work oprder with LG. Called LG and they said that the 3 months warranty was over and that I was no longer covered. “And anyways, the original repair was for a light melting issue and the problem might be something else – like a defective circuit board.”! Really?

The other comebacker she gave me was that my fridge was 8 years old, so it was to be expected! Huh? $2,000 for afridge and this is normal?

Finally after much polite haggling with her, as a “concession”, she said she would send a technician to replace the part, but I would have to pay for the labor. BUT the part would have absolutely no warranty because it was a courtesy replacement!

Horrible, horrible company with absolutely zero desire for customer satisfaction! Happy Friggin’ New Year LG!

  • John October 22, 2013, 7:58 pm

3 year old LG French Door refrigerator. Just had the lights staying on and overheating issue. Went online. Took LG a day to get back to me and then with no real suggestion as to how to fix the problem. Called LG authorized repair facility. They said they could not come out for more than a week. Not acceptable given a fire hazard exists in my home from this. So, called a private appliance repair tech. Out in a few hours. Removed bulbs and ordered new circuit board. Will now be out $500+ for repair of this $2,000 piece of junk. And, I am afraid to have it inb my home. Home Depot not good with follow up either. DO NOT BUY LG PRODUCTS! THEY ARE J-U-N-K!!! Call Consumer Product Safety Commission and demand they take action.

  • James Trearchis May 6, 2014, 8:04 pm

Same problem as everybody else , what a POS . Bins broken, light melted twice, spoiled food . Our do nothing representatives and consumer advocates in the government continue to sit on their hands and collect fat checks while hard working Americans get royally screwed …what else is new. Going to have a whack the fridge with a baseball bat party…. You’re all invited.
Screw you LG. I demand a full refund. Why did they close this lawsuit there are still thousands of FIRE HAZARDS out there!

Same problem with my LG the ice maker stop working and the light melted the plastic around the control unit. Had a LG TV and it stop working within the first month. Junk Products just like Lucky Gold Star.

Same problem with model number LFX25960TT.

  • Burned Up October 10, 2014, 2:48 pm

My LG refrigerator model LFC25760SW light bulbs would not work. I touched them to take them out and replace. so hot could not touch. apparently there is a switch to turn them off if things get too hot. this is good. I called LG and they admitted that this is a huge issue and they are sending someone to replace the light assembly. I called 888-284-3334 and LG looks like they will take care of it. They will not compensate me for all the extra electricity that my fridge has been using because the lights have been on for no telling how long or the wear and tear on the compressor.

  • Gary Billinbgs January 2, 2015, 12:52 pm

Just got off the telephone with LG customer service. The light in the refrigerator was stuck on again. Again…….the light assembly was replaced by LG 3 years ago and so another SECOND failure after the authorized LG. It appears that the LG repair may not be a fix but rather a patch. Customer service told me that they were not aware of any class action law suit. Ha Ha I asked for a replacement refrigerator and was told they would send a repair service and that was all. Of course how stupid of me the settlement states that replacements are at the sole discretion of LG. I then asked to talk to a manager and was denied. Asked to have the manager call me and was told no and this was from their self proclaimed “executive level” customer service. So repair it and wait for it to melt down again ! LOL
