Certain Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln Vehicle Owners and Lessees File Class Action Lawsuit Against Ford Motors Over Spark Plugs
A class action lawsuit has been filed against Ford Motor Company (“Ford Motor” or “Ford” or “Defendant”) in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Beaumont Division (styled Joshua Brewer v. Ford Motor Company, Class Action Case No. 1:11-cv-00222-TH), alleging, among other things, that Ford is engaged in the business of developing, designing, manufacturing, testing, assembling, inspecting, marketing, distributing and selling Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles including MY2005-2008 Ford Mustang; MY2004-2008 Ford F-150; MY2005-2008 Ford F-Super Duty Expedition; MY2006-2008 Ford Explorer; F-53 Ford Motorhome Chassis; MY2007-2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac; MY2005-2008 Lincoln Navigator; MY2006-2008 Lincoln Mark LT; and MY2006-2008 Mercury Mountaineer that are allegedly defective in that the spark plugs cannot be readily removed when they need to be replaced, which alleged spark plug defect causes damage to the spark plug when it is removed, damage to the engine because part of the spark plug remains in the cylinder head, and excessive repair expense caused by the difficulty of the removal process, which may include removal of part of the spark plug that breaks off and remains in the cylinder head, according to the Ford, Lincoln & Mercury Spark Plug class action lawsuit complaint.

I just had the spark plugs replaced in my 2004 F150 Ford pickup. the engine is a XLT 5.4 triton. I had 80005 miles on my truck when they were replaced on june 6 2011.
The Ford Garage doing the service work told me seven of the eight
plugs broke off in the engine then reqoires a special tool and over seven hours to complete the replacement.
I requested the old plugs and have then in my possesion with acopy of the bill.

just had my 2007 ford sport trac serviced and the dealer broke a spark plug off in engine trying to change a miss firring spark plug how do i join the class action cause i had to leave vehicle extra days wit no compensation
Ford Motor Company knew these plugs were defective a long time ago. Why did they not issue a recall? I had a miss in my 2007 Sport-Trac and took it to the Fore Dealership. They attempted to remove the plug on #7 and it broke off in the head. It cost my $365.00 to remove the broken plug. It had to be drilled out with a special too, and now I have another miss. I still have my broken plug that was removed. They, Ford Motor, should have to replace all these defective plugs and bear the cost of doing so, and they should reimburse those that have paid out of pocket.
Took my 2005 F150 in for new spark plusg. They got 7 out and broke the other. Broke the special tool for removel of sparkplug. Shop had to drop engine and remove heads to get the broken spark plug out. Total cost $4,500.00. Ford tech’s are trained to work on these engines. If I brake something I’am working on I can not pass the cost on to the customer. How does Ford Dealers get away with this?
We are having an issue with this as well. My car is currently in the shop, it needs a new head and is going to cost me $2,900.00.
I own a 2006 mark lt and tried to get a tune up , when I was informed of how 1 or all the spark plus will break . Just got truck from Ford cost to remove plugs wA 782.20 . Still more than a tune up and also was told Ford doesn’t use that plug anymore , the plug was redesigned . Still no recall in site .
Since having the dealer remove the spark plugs my truck never seemed right , just took it in 2 weeks ago now they say I need a new motor , I am totally pissed off damn Ford and their trucks ,built Ford tough my ass
Not really a spark plug problem. It’s a head design problem. Ford went with a new head design in November 2008 to correct this problem. I have a 2008 Navigator with about 45000 miles on it and is in service for the 6th time for spark plugs breaking while driving. This time warranty is up and having to pay $250 to replace plug on #3 cylinder. Really bullshit as far as I’m concerned. Ford should replace heads at no charge and place recall on these engines.
I’m all for it. My 2006 Ford F150 is going in for a plug change of Friday. I hope all goes well. We’ll see.

My 2005 Expedition was serviced solely by Sunnyvale Ford up to 75,000 miles. At around 73,000 I brought the vehicle in beacause it was hestitang and driving strange. I was ttold that I needed to replace coils and plugs. I had the dealership replace several plugs and coils. Before the next oil change was due, the engine started making “pinging” noises. I took it to a mechanic because the warranty had ended. The mechanic changed the oil and stated that the noise was not that bad and he would reassess at the next oil change. The noise increasingly grew to sound like a diesel engine. I brought it back to the dealer at 84,000 and the told me that I needed an engine rebuild or a new engine. This is a 12 vehicle with 84,000 miles and it was servced soleley by Ford for 75,000 miles. I conducted an internet search and saw that thei was a common issue with this engine and Ford is aware of the problem. I contacted Ford and explained the issue, but they said the service for the plugs and coils was unrelated to the new issue. It is not. All over the internet, people are complaining that the plugs snap when changed and theis causes the issue I am having. Ford is also aware of the issue. Since the vehicle is mainly used by my wife to transport kids, I had to pay Ford $3,500 to repair the issue. Research the issue online. I am surprised there are no class action suits against Ford. The engine should have been recalled. This is my third Ford vehicle and it will be the last.
I have a 2006 Lincoln Mark LT well the vehicle is hesitating and jerking while driving . I needed to replace coils and plugs and wires I have a misfire issue in a couple of cylinders .. Well have done a search and came across this class action suit I am a little scare to have any one remove the spark plugs now. My truck is running so crappy , I can’t afford to pay what these people had to pay for a repair, that’s ridiculous!!!
Always have owned Ford vehicles!! Ford should help all us with these issues!! needs to be recalled !! seems like enough people are complaining. class action suit is the way to go I guess!!
I am reading all these nightmares about my ford f15o. I only have 32,000 miles on my 2005 king ranch I haven’t had the plugs changed yet I really hope I know if they start a class action suit.
Recommend you change them now before they become seized. I understand ford has redesigned the replacement plugs. Also ‘Champion’ says theirs don’t break.
There are 4 class action suits on these plugs. My Ford Explorer was purchased new and my #8 plug caused power loss and skipping and engine light to come on. Broke off immediately and now want me to change all 8 which will cost open ended if mechanic can’t get them out without breakage. I’m the only driver and the only owner. The dealer should have told you to change them at 20,000 if it would prevent this cost to repair.
Ford won’t do anything. I’m probably going to be charged over $3000 for my repair today.
We just took our 2006 Navigator to the dealership yesterday (04/30/12) because it sounded like the transmission was slipping. We were told that we needed new spark plugs and coils to the tune of $40/ea. A little while later the dealership called and said it is normal for the spark plugs to break off and it would be an extra $20 per spark plug. By the time they got done the bill was $3,000. We have a little over 80,000 miles on it and this is the first time we’ve had to replace plugs. If we had known this was going to cost so much we would probably have gone ahead and traded it off for something else. This is our second Navigator and it is a wonderful vehicle but the first one caught on fire and Ford refused to take any responsibility for that although they had a recall and we had taken it in to be fixed. I think for what you pay for this vehicle, it should be simple to change the plugs, etc. Big Suv’s aren’t really in style right now anyway because of the price of gas but Ford needs to fix what they’ve messed up!!
Now they’re going to try to screw everybody that I had the Eagles made before 2006 You know Ford had to pay a lot of money to cover up this problem probably more than there going to have to pay out on the class action lawsuit

I own a Lincoln Mark Lt. I am totally displeased with this vehicle. Since I bought it in 07 it has given me more heart ach than I need. I recently took it to the Ford house and complained that the truck was jerking at around 45 mile an hr. I asked them to ck the transmission. Since I just had one put in less than 2 years ago. I was informed that they couldn’t find anythingv wrong with the transmission but they would look at the spark plugs. They have been changed by this dealership supposedly along with the coil packs. Well they told me they couldn’t find anything wrong because theircomputer wasn’t working correctly and they had to calibrate it. Two days later I was told they had fixed it. They had replaced three spark plugs. I paid 260
I paid $260 and drove off happy. This was on a Saturday. Nope! Still jerked. I will not take this piece of trash to another dealership again and if I could sell it just to get rid of it I would but I will not hurt anyone else or pass on my problems to anyone. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT AGAIN. I never had any problems with my Chevy pu’s. Thanks for the heart aches Ford!
Can’t believe this is true. I’ve owned Fords for years. Not to many problems with the others but this 05 F150 is trash. Water leaks, Decals look like crap, Timing chain problems, Cam phasers, and Spark plugs breaking in the motor. This is a ticking time bomb. Trash
I own a 1999 F-53 Ford motorhome chassis with an V-10 F350 engine and I have had spark plugs blown out twice now while on vacation. The first time was half way accross the country and cost $1100.00 with repairs and hotel fees and the second time we had to abandon our motorhome 300 miles from home and leave it at a Ford dealership over the holiday weekend and it took 2 weeks to get repaired. However they replaced all the plugs which I had just had done and fixed the harness kit for the blown plug all to the tune of $900.00. I,ve been keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn’t happen again and wish there was something that I could do about it. We finally paid it off after 10 years and now have to worry every time we leave the driveway. I have sent letters to Ford and made phone calls but none of this has helped in any way!!
Bought 2006 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer in 2006. Totally and exclusively maintained at local dealership. Was just serviced within the past two months. 55,00 miles. Car vibrated and lost power and engine light finally came on on the way to the dealership. Number 8 spark plug “seized” which means it was broken when the mechanic attempted to remove it. The dealership recommended changing all 8 spark plugs and doing a fuel service to help the carbon buildup and prevent “seized” sparkplug problem later on. $946 for just that and replacement IF no other sparkplugs break during removal. 1/2 hr. labor for EACH sparkplug — ie open ended estimate. Have bumper to bumper premium ESP but “non lubricated part” (guess bad/defective design isn’t covered). Could have been prevented by just telling me to change the plugs out in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 by either Ford or the dealership. Called Ford customer care center and they sent the complaint form to the dealer who offered a $100 coupon as remedy. With 4 federal lawsuits, Ford can’t take a position and is allowing it’s long suffering customers to just pay for it’s mistakes. New spark plug design, eleven page tech bulletin or how to remove and how to remove broken parts left in the cylinder spell it out to even the dumbest Ford customer. Wonder why Americans buy foreign cars? Could it be that Ford treats its customers like S__T?
Complained to FTC, NHTSA and they of course ignore the problem as it’s not proven to kill anyone YET. Planned to keep this car and now I plan to sell or trade it in on a foreign car. Not a VW. They can’t fix their cars either. Poor Americans.
I brought my 2007 Mark LT to a dealer in my area because it was hesitating and my check engine light was flashing. Later I was call by the dealer and told that I needed to replace the coils. After a $308.00 dollars bill, I only was able to drive 1 block before my truck started to repeat the same symptoms (hesitating and the check engine light flashing). I return to the dealer and was told that I had to replace several plugs. My vehicle has 77,000 miles and it was serviced only by Lincoln for 77,000 miles, the service manger inform me that the plugs are suppose to last 100.000 miles but they never do and they are also part glass which are very difficult to remove. He also informs me that it will cost between $800.00 and $1000.00 dollars. It’s been two weeks and the mechanic was only able to remove 6 out of the 8 sparks plugs, I was told by the service manger that all 6 plugs broke in the engine. I contacted the Lincoln/ Ford Custom Relation Center (1-800-521-4140) and explained the issue. I was told that no one has ever call about this problem therefore there could be no compensation or off set for my repair’s. However the employee offer to call the dealer-ship on my behalf……THANK’S A FU&@#NG LOT. I explain that it’s all over the internet and people are complaining that the plugs break when being change and maybe someone from the corporation should look into this issue. Once again the employee ensured me that this problem has never been reported and there is nothing they could do at this time…….I am waiting for the two remain plugs to be pulled (stay tune for my bill). A $250 tune up on a 2006 F-150, now up to $800 on husband’s truck and not even done yet. Can’t wait for the final bill.
i have a 2006 mark lt and when it had around 48,000 miles one of the spark plugs broke and the dealer spent 3 days with the truck in order to fix it. now the truck has 70,000 miles and i was getting ready to change the spark plugs when i came across all this comment about the spark plugs breaking while trying to take them off. i call the consumer line for lincoln to see if they had a recall but they said they have never heard of this happening before and she direct me to a dealership close to my house to have them do it instead. i ask the shop how much would it be for the tune up and he said it started at $450 but more than likely would go up depending how many spark plugs would break. he said that it could be as many as all 8 or as few as 2??? FORD IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE, YET THEY DECIDE TO DO NOTHING TO FIX THEIR WRONG.

Took my 2006 F150 in for new spark plugs last week they broke 7 and when they had to remove the computer to get to the back plugs. They put the computer back in and then the truck would not start. They found out later they broke the computer and cost me 100 more for a used one. Then I call the 1800 for ford they said since I never took the truck to a ford dealer if the lawsuit would be paid I would not . But the garage was still a certified mec. I will never buy a ford again after this 1,400 problem!!
We had a tune up done at the ford dealer on our truck and ever since then our truck had been have all kinds of problems so we had our friend change the spark plugs again and found out that we they did the tune up the put in spark plugs ion that were to small and ever since we’ve had it changed and we r still having problems and now the engine is messed up bad anyone think the wrong spark plug could do this?
How is Ford keeping this issue under wraps? My 2008 F150 4.6L with 85k miles blew out a spark plug a week ago at highway speed. I was out of town on a trip. The truck was towed to a repair shop and they knew exactly what was wrong and were able to obatin the Ford tool and kit to repair it. I had them replace all plugs and coils. Now I have a loud ticking noise and took the truck to the local Ford today. They were very nasty about me letting a non Ford shop do the repair. I was in the middle of nowhere when it broke down. They claim they will have to remove the head and see if there are parts of spark plugs in one of the cylinders. This issue is being covered up by Ford. I have owned Fords for 40 years. My next truck may be a Chevy.
I bought a Ford-F150 5.4 triton and i had my plugs changed at 94,000 miles and the mechanic broke 6 off and had the tool but the number 8 broke and he knocked it down in the piston and had to pull the heads it went from 526.00 to 1894.24 and he never told me this could happen i think Ford should be responsablel for replacing these motors they are a bad design. I have had four spark plugs break in my 2005 Ford F150 5.4 3V XLT. It took a special tool with long hours in labor to remove them. I am nervous that porcelain and metal might still be in the head causing other problems. My cam phasers are now making a lot of noise while idling. I understand this is a second problem that Ford 5.4 motors are currently having.

The plugs corrode in the aluminum head at 45,000. Change them before that and add a little wd40 to the threads
06 Ford Expedition 5.4 with 95,000 miles. All plugs broke,heads pulled. Bill is over $2,500.00 and climbing. Never heard of this problem before hearing everyone else sharing nightmares on the site. I have owned over 17 ford vehicles and this will be my last.
I had to replace two spark plugs on my 2007 Ford F150 FX2, both plugs broke and the special tool to pull them costs me $100 plus shipping. I replaced them with a one piece version of the spark plug made from another manufacturer. The truck was out of service for 10 days. When an engine coil needed to be replaced on my 2006 Lincoln Mark LT the spark plug broke inside the engine and cannot be removed. Thousands of dollars now need to be put up to have them take part the engine to get the broken spark plug out. This needs to be stopped! How can we get reimbursement?
2007 mercury mountaineer 74400 miles all ignition coils were changed between 35000 n 60000 by dealer month after month they kept changing the coils instead if looking at the intake manifold which had a crack . My mechanic replaced the manifold n few if the same coils now he’s telling me coupke spark plugs are oxidized . Ford offered now help at all n dealership are scumbags that caused all this meanwhile this was all fine under warranty now truck is out of warranty how do I file to join this class action suit
I had a similar scenario, i own a 2007 Lincoln Navigator, when replacing the spark plugs 3 of them broke, i had to get the vehicle towed to the dealer and they charged 480.00 to remove the broken spartk plugs.
I also have a 2007 Mark LT truck and is time for spark plugs but i am afraid of what’s going to happen.
It would be nice if Ford could step up and do a recall on this issue.

I have a 2007 Lincoln Mark LT.. it bucks like a bronco during exceleration – not all the time but frequently. I finally punched the gas and my engine light came on. Took it to AutoZone and they hooked up a device to the computer. My number 2 plug is not firing right. I have heard on various forums this is common and the cost to replace the plugs and ignition coils can run up to $2,000 to replace spark plugs ! And you can’t do it yourself as it requires special tools that only a Ford/Lincoln Service/Dealer have. Love the truck but wow.. $2K to replace spark plugs is not the way to do business
I own a 2007 Lincoln navigator and its about to hit 86,000 miles so as I’m preparing to change the spark plugs myself I am now very concerned. And the worst part is that even if you take it to Ford/Lincoln dealership and they break the sparks I will be left with the bill. How is that possible? Shouldn’t Ford/Lincoln Dealer be qualified to change the spark plugs without breaking them? and if the do then it should be covered by them. This is outrageous. Please send me more information regarding the Lawsuit, as I should not be liable for Ford/Lincoln known defect in their engineered parts that will conveniently add profits to their bottom line while a very simple and necessary procedure such as changing the spark plugs of a vehicle most definitely cause damage and raises the cost of the consumer into the thousands of dollars while the normal and proper cost is considerably less money. This is obviously a deliberated attempt to collect money by designing an specific situation that requires the consumer to either pay thousand of dollars or be without transportation that in most cases is the only source of getting around.

I have a 2006 Lincoln Navigator that has been jerking and driving really bad. I know i need a tune up and starting online research and came across this page. I was hoping that changing the spark plugs would help get it back to normal driving conditions but now i am scared that they will break and end up costing me more. Ugh!
Does anyone know the status of this case? I’m just going through this fiasco with my 2006 Expedition, and if I’d known of this engineering flaw I would have never bought it. And yes I call it a flaw. I’m a mechanical engineer and spark plugs have had the same basic design for years and spark plug parts rarely, if ever, fall into a cylinder. Then to have to remove the engine to remove the head adds insult to injury.
Anyway, if anyone knows if the suit still continues and wants another data point, please let me know.

I have a 2006 Lincoln Mark LT and was just looking to see what spark plugs to get and came across this lawsuit. I just purchased this truck in Dec. 2014! I am scared to change them now and was going to check on the coil packs as I have been having hesitation problems. OH MY GOD, what do I do? I just paid 20K for this vehicle. Can I join this law suit or is it to late? Has it been settled?
