Ford Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Filed Over Alleged Defect in 2004 & 2005 Model Year Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey Transmissions & Torque Converters

Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey Owners and Lessees File Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Against Ford Motor Company Over An Alleged Defective Transmission and Torque Converter In Model Year 2004 and 2005 Ford Freestars and Mercury Montereys That Allegedly Can Cause Sudden Power Loss and Loss of Acceleration.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Ford Motor Company (“Ford” or “Defendant”) in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, Brooklyn Office (styled Judy Azose v. Ford Motor Company, Case No. CV 10-3634) alleging, among other things, that the transmissions and torgue converters in Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey 2004-2005 model year minivans suffer from an engineering design defect that manifests itself when, without warning or prior signs of transmission problems, the output shaft splines in the torque converter split and the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles suddenly lose power and cannot maintain speed or accelerate, according to class action lawsuit news reports.

The Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey Model Year 2004-2005 transmission and torque converter power loss class action lawsuit complaint is reportedly brought on behalf of the following class, unless otherwise excluded:

All (i) current owners or lessees of a 2004 or 2005 Ford Freestar or Mercury Monterey minivans residing in the United States; and (ii) former United States owners or lessees of 2004 or 2005 Ford Freestar or Mercury Monterey minivans.

The Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey class action lawsuit complaint reportedly alleges statutory violations of the New York General Business Law section 349, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty of merchantability, violation of Magnuson-Moss and unjust enrichment.

      Mike,

Welcome to the club. Please see my comments on this site and also please visit the http://www.nhtsa.gov website (National Highway Traffic Safety website to see if others experience problem with Taurus. I only know of the Freestar and Windstar problems.

I have a 2004 Mercury Sable with less than 50,000 miles on it. While driving, the car acted like it went into netural. Thank goodness we got to the side of the road without a accident. When I stopped, the transmission would not go into any gear, it was like it was in netural in both forward and reverse.
Took it to Ford and they had to replace the torque converter. They knew of the problem, and it is not just with thr Freestar and the Windstar. I know for sure it is with the Taurus and Sable. The bill came to over $1800.00

2004 Ford Taurus 119000 miles. While on a busy highway 7-23-11 with crusie control on, engine reved to 7000 rpm. coasted to side of road. acted as if transmission was in neutral. waited 2 hours for tow truck and transportation home in 150 degree weather. Cost to repair, just under $3000.00. Ford is aware of problem. I was told by a dealer that FORD would not do a recall untill someone hurt or killed.

It is about time FORD corrected this problem.

Just purchased a 2004 Ford Freestar Minivan in June. Tranny died while we were on vacation last week. The van is in Maine, and we are home in Ohio. We are STUCK. What am I supposed to do now?

    • Jackie September 1, 2010, 1:30 am

Currently, the problem with the 04 Ford Freestar is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency. It has been under investigation for almost a year so it is hoped that they will soon make a decision to make Ford perform a recall which will mean for you that Ford must pay for repairs. I purchased the vehicle from a dealer about Sept. 09 who also put a warranty on it and because they could not fix it repeatedly, their warranty fails and that is why I let them keep the van the last time it was in their shop. According to my state law, you can’t sell a vehicle that you can’t repair and yet offer a warranty of repair so I’m suing the dealership. They can go after Ford if they want but please go to the NHTS website and put in a complaint. There are hundreds of complaints AND the van mimics a transmission problem but it really isn’t that. It’s something called the PCM. The coil paks supposedly go bad also and make the van’s computer system malfunction giving off a multiplicity of error codes.

i have a 2004 freestar van and had trouble for about two months.after 3,150 dollars water is getting in the pmc board.took it apart and put a new pmc board.seal it and water got back in it again.dry it out and made a cover over it sealed it off.when the pmc board didn’t work right the transmission didn’t work right.after that it is fine. ford said they had it fixed 2 times but they didn’t .ford said they could not found out what was wrong with it. i took is to a small bussiness and they fixed it.

        • steve thomas March 17, 2011, 2:24 pm

I too had mine repaired twice with me paying $3200 the first time and Ford paying the dealer
$1100 The dealer installed a defective part on the first repair and now both Ford and Dealer refuse to reimburse me any thing saying that the recall is a single event repair

      • amy April 26, 2012, 2:52 pm

I bought my 04 Freestar 6 months ago nothing but problems from the start. First brought it home the check engine light comes on. Then the dealership hadit for 3 weeks. It was the trany. Since then the spark plugs, wires, and cole pack have been replaced. Now everytime it rains the van sputters, backfires,or even stalls. It does not do this when the van is dry. Im tired of this van I still owe money on it and it has become a safty issue for me and my five kids to ride in it….

  • Brittney C September 28, 2010, 8:43 am

Five days before this story aired (a local news broadcast out of Orlando, FL) I had the same problem with my 2003 Ford Taurus. It happened on Sunday afternoon during a high traffic hour on I-4. I was able to coast to the side of the road; however if this had occurred during rush hour traffic I may not have been able to coast to the side of the road.
Other car companies have issued recalls for potentially dangerous defects; yet Ford has turned away almost ignoring the complaints completely from consumers and endangering the lives of potentially 600,000 families. That’s not a dreamed up number, it was the number of vehicles manufactured with the potentially problematic parts. I also consider that to be a very conservative number, assuming that there is just one passenger and one vehicle that may be effected when the torque converter unexpectedly fails.
The reporter had also uncovered several internal documents (within Ford) which shows they have known about this problem for years. Even having problems with a vehicle on their own test track!
I think it is a very clear case of a company that is being negligent and making a choice not to stand behind its product putting the lives of many in danger.

On Tuesday Sept 28th, 2010, while traveling at 60mph in the passing lane of a 4 lane highway my 2004 Ford Freestar suddenly stopped “pulling”. No forward, no backwards, nothing. Zero warnings, and in heavy rush hour traffic. It is only due to my being an experienced driver who reacted immediately that we were not seriously injured or killed. Myself and my 100% disabled 88 year old father were left stranded 2 hours from home with what was later diagnosed to be a failed torque convertor. Transmission completely ruined with metal shavings throughout, repair to cost $3,961.82 . Book value of van $6,000.00. No effort made by Ford to assist with repair, and we were in fact taken advantage of by local Ford dealer when we recieved no trade in value on Freestar. None. Forced to purchase another vehicle because repair costs were too high to justify. Tow truck took 6 hours to arrive, rental car for 3 days, plus I had installed new brake system, new battery, 4 new tires, new fuel filter, and complete Ford certified tune up during the summer of 2010 and was not compensated for any of it. Nothing. We were almost killed and Ford is negligent by not addressing this problem.

I bought a used 2005 Ford Freestar from a used Ford dealer in late July with aprox. 92,000 miles. Today on 10-03-10 with 98,000 aprox. miles the trnsmission quit without warning. PLEASE HELP! This should not happen. My 1999 Toyota Sienna has 279,000 miles with no power-train problems ever.

  • angela crower October 19, 2010, 11:07 am

2005 f-150 Lariet…Junk! My engine jumped timing at 94,000. I had a low mileage replacement, $2000.00….Now, this engine is no making the same noise at start up…It will break too. Cam gears and guides are bad?? Problem is I’m still making payments on this truck. 5 more payments. It has ONLY 132,000 on it ..I’m now searcing for a third engine.
A 48,000 dollar piece of crap i can’t even sell.

On Friday (10-29-10) My wife pulled out of the driveway in our 2004 Mercury Monterey and lost mobility immediately. The van only has 57,000 miles on it!

Thank the Lord, it died in our street and not in a dangerous condition like others have had. It is currently at the dealership and the repair cost is $1,771. That includes all the seals, gaskets, torque converter, towing, and transfer shaft.

The service manager John at Sunrise Ford in Ft. Pierce Florida even said they have had a lot of bad torque converters on this vehicle and the Ford Windstar.

Hopefully, I will be refunded one day.

I have a 2005 freestar with 70000 miles. A month ago, I was pulling onto a major road, and without warning, the transmission went out. I have never had problems with the trans. since I bought it in Feb. 08. Thankfully, I still had my warranty, so it was covered with a $100 deductible! It says on my paperwork that it was the torque converter. After getting the van back, it rained within the next week or so, and my car was running extremely rough. Like if you were driving a manual doing about 20mph, and put the car into 5th. It just didn’t want to go. My brother and dad did some research on the net and thought it could be the PCM that was getting wet because the seal was broke. I took the car back to ford, and lo and behold..it was the PCM. They are telling me now that it is not covered under warranty, and that it is only coincidence that this happened AFTER they just had my car apart, and now they want to charge me $300+ to fix.

  • Marty November 15, 2010, 8:46 am

Have a 2005 mercury mini van . Was stopped at a light on a busy street , the light changed, I put my foot on the gas a the car did not go any where. The van has 66000 miles on it and there was no warning as to the transmission or the torque converter lost power. Had to have van towed to dealer to find out the extended warranty is over by mileage not the time of purchase. Hope Ford does something about this problem. I have owned Ford products mt whole life and also worked for them. It is a lot of money to spend out of pocket for repair. Ihave never had this problem in any of the cars I have owned before.

  • Debra November 16, 2010, 4:55 pm

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer at 129,000 miles transmission just crapped out. I hear that I am lucky to have made it past 60,ooo miles.

  • Lynn Stacy November 17, 2010, 4:06 pm

Just bought a 2005 Ford Taurus. 89,000 miles. I’ve had it 35 days. It’s in the shop. Transmission/torque converter. I depend on my car for my job. This has been a nightmare. I am paycheck to paycheck and like most folks these days don’t have money laying around to take care of such a huge mechanical expense. Took it back to used car lot 2 weeks after I bought it and told them that I think I’d feel more comfortable in another vehicle because the check engine light kept coming on. They said no, just get it a tune-up and we’ll deduct that from your first payment. I agreed. Before I got it to the shop for a tune-up, it broke down on the highway, motor running but wouldn’t go anywhere. Transmission. Had it towed back to the car lot….they wouldn’t work with me at all. Hadn’t been 30 days, but since I didn’t buy a warranty I was SOL. Stuck with a car payment and a large repair bill. My mechanic said that the transmission had been worked on before. Didn’t Ford get a bailout? By reading all the comments Ford by rights should do something about this. I’m totally afraid of this car.

  • Pat Goldberg November 21, 2010, 1:36 pm

I had 51,000 miles on a 2004 Mercury Monterey that I purchased new in Aug of 2004. My van just slowed down and stopped, luckily I was able to get it up on the side of the road and out of traffic before it completely stopped moving. The tow truck person asked what the problem was and at the time I was not sure, only described it and he told me what was wrong and the every Mercury van and Ford Windstar he towed had the same problem, the transmission and/or the torwque converter.
when I called my local Mercury dealer that claimed no knowledge what so ever about any problems. Yet a friend called his son in the north and he siad yes there were problems he had seen plenty of them. It cost about $2400 for the repair and I also got a 3 yr 30 mile warranty from the repair shop. After reading some of the comments, I feel that I got a fair deal, but I now have to hope that I don’t get sick of have another unexpected emergency.

  • Christine Oosdyke December 4, 2010, 9:43 am

Is this where I file My class action lawsuit on my 2004 Mercury Monterey Torgue converter failure. This just acurred over the Thanksgiving weekend and I need to know where to file.

    Thank you,

  • J Poteet December 5, 2010, 1:32 pm

12-4-10 I am an original owner of a 2005 Mercury Monterey. My torque converter went up at 35000 miles and was fixed under warranty. Today, 12-4-10 my torque converter went up again, with 98,000 miles. Unfortunately, the van is no longer under warranty. We were able to get towed pretty quickly, but had to have someone other than the tow truck driver get us because we had 6 people in the van. God blessed us with no injuries or no accidents! Now the decision is where to get the van fixed.

    • Danny Rodgers March 5, 2011, 10:47 pm

As much as I have always loved ford vehicles, I really regret buying our 04 Freestar in the fall of 2010. We started having transmission or torque convertor problems less than a month after we purched it. The dealer gave us a short term warranty but would not honor it. The car hasn’t completely quit yet but has an excessive quiver in the higher gears and sometimes tries to bog down on take-off. I’m very sorry to hear that Ford hasn’t made a recall. Sooner or later someone could lose their life because of this defect.

  • Kendra December 7, 2010, 11:53 am

I own a 2004 Mercury Monterey and on December 5th Me and My Family were driving home from base in Mildenhall,England!!! doin 60mph on the motorway when suddenly I had the same problem, no power to push the van forward.. luckily I was able to pull off the rd without incident and had to wait over an hr and a half for someone to come pick us up in temp’s of about 20 degrees Farenheight.. Needless to say had it towed to a mechanic and he said that our Transmission is Junk!!! It will cost us about $3000.00 if not more depending on parts cuase we are stationed with the military over in England.. The van has only 88,000 miles on it and not a thing wrong with it except the transmision and it just stopping on us for no reason….. I really think that Ford company should have a massive recall on this issue before it takes the life of someone or multiple someones…..

  • Gina Grasso December 10, 2010, 9:20 pm

I have a 2003 Ford Taurus with only 44,000 miles and I just had to have the Torque Converter replaced. My Transmission guy told me he has been seeing this alot lately. I had no warning or anything one minute I am driving and the next nothing. Its not cheap to replace cost me a little over $1,100. Is there any suit pending for me year and model vehicle?

  • Josh Zinsmaster December 11, 2010, 12:31 pm

It was the middle of November, and I just dropped off a friend to pick up his car. When on the way home as I was turning at a busy light my 2004 mercury monterey just wouldnt go. Luckly I was rolling fast enough to make it over the train tracks, because about 5 min later a train came down those same tracks. I had it towed by AAA and the repair shop told me that the tourque converter was ruined. The cost of the repair was going to cost 3,000. My wife and I have been without the van since, because the repair is so exspensive. Our two kids who are 5 and 10 have to walk a half a mile to school in the winter weather, because of this crappy ford transmisson. I just cant belive it went with no warning the 2004 only had 58,000 miles my 98 dodge avenger has never had any issues that my van is having, and its not only the transmisson. Thats just the latest issue!!!! ;(

  • Michael Schmauch December 24, 2010, 8:23 am

We also had the transmission fail on our 2005 monterey in September of this year. My wife was driving down the highway @65 mph. Like the other complaints the engine raced and then the car lost power. Fortunately she was in the right lane and was able to get over to the side. $2000 later the van is now experiencing electrical problems. And we had to replace the throttle cable, and the egr valve is bad.

  • Dan Lilya January 2, 2011, 10:56 am

Last night while going 70 mph in our Freestar the van lost all “drive”. My wife was with the kids and was in the passing lane going up a hill. Temp outside was about zero…we live in Minnesota. She coasted to the side of the road and we had to have it towed. No forward, reverse…nothing. The engine revs but that’s it. There was no forwarning at all. What do we do to get in on this lawsuit? ~Dan dslilya@yahoo.com

    • Scott Drake July 27, 2011, 11:11 am

Mine did the same thing. 70,000 miles and my youngest son was driving it. It will cost me as much as the car is worth to fix it. I want in on this suit too.

  • Kenneth Methal January 2, 2011, 12:19 pm

Same story. 05 freestar 51000 miles just rumbled to a stop on the nj turnpike, with 3 little kids in the backseat, in the dark, with ice from a recent blizzard, lining the sides of the road.pretty upsetting!

  • Vicki Taylor January 5, 2011, 7:54 pm

October 2010 82,000 miles Ford Freestar transmission went paid $2300 to get it fixed.
I still do not trust this van on long distance driving. Ford should pay the bill also I still owe 2 years of carpayments on a piece of junk!

    • Tracy March 3, 2011, 12:58 pm

they will after it is recalled!!! please call 1-800-392-3673 to let them know about this and make sure your vehicle is registered in there system it took me about ten mins they said they do not look up these sites and the only way to help this problem is to contact them directly!!!!!!!

  • JEFFREY ANDPAMELA HARRIS January 15, 2011, 4:10 pm

WIFE TRAMISSION IN 2004 FREESTAR VAN WENT OUT AS SHE JUST PASS A INTERSECTION,LUCKY SHE IS O K .72925 MILES THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPEN.WE HAD TO REPACE CONVERTER IN TRAMISSION AT $838.34 DOLLARS WE DID NOT HAVE AT THE TIME .PUT IT ON A CREDIT CARD.
I JUST GALD SHE IS OK .I BELIVE FORD SHOULD RECALL THIS VAN.

    • Jenny Kender March 6, 2011, 9:56 pm

That’s what the miles are on our Mercury Monterey when we started having issue …we need to be concerned that our children are passages in these vehicles we purchase that they can leave us in a very life threatening situation WITH our children on board and we are helpless as , like you, our saving is repairing manufacturing problems ! Not just a part broke but a real honest to god poorly made vehicle that we paid for in our hard earned money!!!!! The deal conveniently found our issues at inspection and then said”well this is what needs to be done or NO STICKER!!!” THEIR STUFF IS DEFECTIVE AND WE HAVE TO PAY!

  • Curt Gausman January 21, 2011, 12:38 pm

My wife was driving our 2004 Freestar on a busy 4 lane HWY, when, you guessed it, no more trans. Had it towed to the dealer and was told that there was no repairing the trans. Was also told that they were not aware of any problems with this trans. It is now in my driveway and I do not know what to do with it. Got online and WOW! How could the dealer not know of any issues with this trans? Who to and how do I file an official complaint?

  • Beth Edwards February 7, 2011, 1:13 pm

My Transmission in my 2004 Ford Freestar just went out over the weekend. While I have not had it officially diagnosed, I’m quite sure I know what the problem is whether it be the torque convertor or the PCM. I just bought this van a month and a half ago with no warranty. I contacted the dealership where it was purchased and they are being of no help at all, not that I expected differently. The thing that upsets me the most is the Service Manager said he had never heard of this problem before which is a flat out lie. I believe it was in June of 2010 when a “service bulletin” was sent to all dealerships on how to fix the problem with the PCM and moisture getting into the housing unit for the PCM. I truely hope the NHTSA makes Ford do a recall on these vehicles.

    • TRACY March 3, 2011, 12:54 pm

please call ford @ 1-800-392-3673 to get your vehicle in there system and let them know directly about this problem it will help get it recalled and you will not have to pay for repairs they will pay for it but not untill it is recalled:( so please call asap but make sure your vehicle is in there system!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it took me about ten minutes!!!

      • Pam August 30, 2011, 2:34 pm

I own a 2004 Ford Freestar Van and it has about 115,000 miles. I broke down on Sunday and almost got rear-ended at a light. First, I was driving and noticed my radio went out and then came to a light and noticed my air-conditioning went out, I then could not roll my window down or unlock the door , I had lost all power (104 degrees in Texas) but my car was still running and when the light turned green I was bogging down and managed to get pulled over. I put the car in park and sat there for a minute and then everything powered back-up. I bought a new battery and had my alternator checked and the car was fine for 1 day and now it is acting up again. I took Tracy’s advice above and called the 1-800 # to let them know and there is nothing you can do at this point but pay to get it fixed. My Van was bogging down and dieing on me while driving down the road and Ford said it was carbon build up and charged me over $500.00 to fix it and this was just about 6months ago. I have also replaced coil packs.

    • Donna Zittel March 27, 2011, 9:44 am

I’m having the SAME issues with my 2004 Monterey. Replaced tranny at a $3400 cost, rpelaced Coil packs after computer got wet, $800 and now its all messed up AGAIN. This is all within a year. I am on a mission to contact everyone. I wish ALL of us would. Lets not just sit around and wait for others to do it for us! I contacted my local news stations, next is attorney general, I am contacting all lawyers associated iwth class actions uits ( there are more then 1) and calling my senator and the highway safety dept as well as Ford. PLEASE everyone do the SAME!!

  • Doug Comb February 21, 2011, 2:38 pm

My 80-yr. old father-in-law experienced a torque converter failure at 64,000 miles in his 2004 Mercury Monterey on Feb. 15, 2011 while driving on a Florida freeway! Very fortunately for him and his wife he was able to coast over to an exit ramp and push it to a safe place at the roadside. Huge safety hazard! After tow and rental bills he paid $1770 for a replacement torque converter and Ford refused to acknowledge any problem or offer any relief for the tow and rental b ills let alone the torque converter replacement. Reminds me of the acronym for F-O-R-D: Found On Road Dead!

  • Bill Dunham February 22, 2011, 9:31 pm

My story is similar to all the rest. Fortunately for me, mine happened right in my driveway. We used our 2005 Freestar on Jan 5th around town and parked it in the drive at the end of the day. The next morning, my wife went to use the vehicle, put it in gear and had nothing. No forward or reverse. Nothing! Vehicle only has 62000 miles on it. After reading on line, I’m certain it’s the torque converter spline issue. I’ve contacted Ford repeatedly for assistance but they refuse to help. I’m not taking it to a Ford dealer. I’ll get it repaired by an independant mechanic and then start looking for a new veicle. I don’t trust it any more. Ford should take responsibility for this design flaw. How do I join the class action suite?

  • Lynn Mangrella February 28, 2011, 1:34 pm

I purchased a Ford Freestar in “2004” and here it is only 7 years later in early 2011 and my Transmission and everything that goes along with it DIED while I was driving down a major highway. I was driving at a speed of 60mph with no warning lights or anything. Luckily I was able to pull over to the side otherwise I would have been hit from behind and cause who knows what! I am your average person who lives pay check to pay check and still has a car payment left on the vehicle so you can imagine how upset I am. The cost to repair is $3000. If anyone can tell me where to go to get in on the Class Action Law Suit I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Tramaine March 2, 2011, 8:07 am

I have a 2005 Ford Taurus, and the transmission went out without warning. The Ford place told me it was the torque converter and would cost around $3,100 to fix. I don’t know what I’m going to do. Seems like I’m not the only one with this problem. Ford should pay for this.

  • tracy March 3, 2011, 12:50 pm

IF YOU WANT THIS PART REACLLED FORD TOLD ME THAT THEY NEED ENOUGH COMPLAINTS TO THEM DIRECTLY!!!!!!!! MY 2005 FORD FREE STARS TORQUE CONVERTER WENT WITH NO WARNING AND WILL COST ME LATER TODAY 2700 BULL **** IS WHAT THIS IS. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A FORD AGAIN

  • Jenny Kender March 6, 2011, 5:20 pm

I bought a 2004 new from a local dealership and have up till recently had all work done by the dealership. In December i paid to have a broken axle replaced $1,500 then 2 weeks later i was driving in a heavy rain storm and the engine just cut off. I was able to get the engine started but it had no real power so i took it straight to the dealer. They said that it was the PMC pack causing the 3rd cylinder to misfire and it would be 700$ to fix….we opted to take it to our family mechanic which is when we discovered this manufacturing defect problem with the housing allowing water/moisture to enter the system and created multiple computer malfunction and send misdiagnosis codes to the mechanic. Now this transmission issue as well… I am saying these vans are all LEMONS I paid 22,000 AND an extended warranty. I feel betrayed by our dealership and by Ford , they are dishonest and not owning up to the defects that are costing their customer their savings. I have put out 2,500 in just these 2 repairs in 2 months and that leaves us broke and with an unreliable unsafe vehicle…so NOW WHAT???? We just wait for Ford to do the right thing? ???

My wife picked up my son from school and was on the entrance ramp of a major highway when the transmission failed on our 2004 Mercury Monterey van. No warning of any problems and no response from the transmission in any gear. I have never had a transmission fail with 122,000 miles on it. It was towed to a Ford dealer where it was determined that “transmission failure” had occured. It cost us over $3,400 for a Ford rebuilt with three year warranty. I just hope that the rebuilt doesn’t fail on that same highway in the morning when there are five kids in our school carpool.

BOUGHT 2004 FORD FREESTAR MARCH 2007, 22MI. PURCHASED EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR ADDITIONAL $1400. TORQUE CONVERTER FAILED JUNE 2008 . ALL WORK COVERED BY FORD, LESS $100 DEDUCTIBLE.

OCTOBER 2009 COULD NOT PUT MORE THAN $5.00 GAS IN VEHICLE BEFORE IT SPASLED BACK ON ME. INDEPENDENT MECHANIC SAID IT WAS THE SELENOID IN FUELTANK. $259 TO REPLACE/REPAIR. FORD TOLD MECHANIC WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER THIS.

SECOND TRANSMISSION PROBLEM LATE JANUARY 2011: VAN HAD NO POWER IN REVERSE. DIAGNOSED BY INDEPENDENT TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST AS WATER IN TRANSMISSION WHICH DELAMINATED REVERSE AND WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE ALL FORWARD GEARS TO CEASE AS WELL. REBUILD ESTIMATED AT $2195. FORD TELLS ME MY EXTENDED WARRANTY IS EXPIRED — THEY BACKDATED THE WARRANTY I BOUGHT IN 2007, TO WHEN THE VAN INTIALLY WENT ON THE ROAD IN 2004!! I AM A RECENT BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR, LIVE ALONE ON SOCIAL SECURITY. LIMITED INCOME PREVENTS ME FROM FIXING OR REPLACING MY VEHICLE. MY ONLY CONSOLATION IS THAT, BOTH TIMES, I WAS IN A PARKING LOT WHEN TRANSMISSION FAILED AND I HAD NO POWER. LUCKILY, NEITHER I NOR MY COLLEGE-AGE SON WERE ON THE ROAD WHEN THIS HAPPENED.

I AM APPALLED THAT FORD CLAIMS THEY PRODUCE QUALITY VEHICLES. THIS IS MY LAST FORD. BACK TO MAZDA IF AND WHEN I CAN AFFORD ANOTHER VEHICLE!

So what happens now? we all have broken cars of a huge bill. whats going on with the law suit. do we just sit and wait for the other shoe to drop? I just called the Ford dealer in hopes to get some sympathy(fat chance) and they said they are fully aware of the problem but Ford has not issued a recall all so they said was that for us to get it fixed and hold on to the receipt. for those of us that have the mercury’s’ we may never get one due to the fact that the company is no more.

  • Phil March 19, 2011, 6:33 pm

The transmission of my 2005 Mercury Monterey failed on 3/16/2011 exactly as noted in this class action. Without warning, the transmission acted as if it was in neutral. Right now it’s at the local Ford dealer awaiting replacement of the torque converter and transmission at the tune of $3100.00 plus tax. The service manager at my local Ford dealer claimed this was something new that he’d not heard about. How can I be included in any judgment against Ford?

Heather, From Ford just call, she said there is no recall and Ford is doing nothing. Right now it reads (Recall campign number N/A) until this changes we leave up to Laywers? Nice

Join the Facebook page – Recall Ford Freestars.
A car jack, part number 3F2Z17080AB, that comes standard with 2004 Ford Freestar Minivans, bent while supporting the van causing the vehicle to fall, crush and kill the owner that was under the vehicle doing repairs in the right front wheel well.

I own a 2005 Ford Taurus. While driving at approximately 60 mph, the engine began to rev and the vehicle started losing speed. I was able to pull over and the vehicle was towed to a mechanic shop where the torque converter was repaired. According to the mechanic, the converter was stripped. He said this appears to be a problem iwth these cars. It is a weakness in the converter.

  • Jennifer April 5, 2011, 8:58 pm

We bought a 2005 Ford Freestar and have been having issues for the last 2 years with misfires to the third cylinder, according to our mechanic. What happens is, while I am driving my three small children, the van FEELS like the trans is slipping. Eventually, it will completely stop running or feel, like you are stuck in first gear while you’re trying to go much faster. Our mechanic has replaced the ignition core FIVE times. Every time it is repaired, it will run for a month or two before it exhibits the same problems. Since the part is under warranty, we’ve been able to have it replaced, but it isn’t fixing the problem! Now that I’ve seen all the postings on the PCM, we’re going to have it replaced. I’m just praying we don’t have trans problems before we get rid of this stupid thing. Sorry FORD, this is our last one! You cannot believe how inconvenient and unsafe it is for FAMILIES who are driving this FAMILY vehicle to just give out in the middle of the road!!! Changing over car seats, finding another vehicle to get our family to and from work several times, picking up our van, switching car seats back, and repeating the same process over and over is getting old. If FORD issued the recall as they should, everyone would know what the problem was instead of playing these guessing games. And BTW, we were having electrical problems before this that the dealer repair shop couldn’t fix….yes that’s right….the FORD repair shop told us they couldn’t fix the problem. Nice.

    Calling 1-800-392-3673.

This has happened to me twice!
    I own a 2005 Mercury Monterey….both times
my car suddenly lost all acceleration as if it was in neutral.
I was on the the freeway the second time it happened.
$2700 plus in repairs and numerous times back to the repair shop.

Starting with the brakes and the front axle had to be replaced. It now has 78000 miles and is in the shop having the trany b/c the warrent expired two weeks before. FORD MOTOR COMPANY NEED TO HAVE A RECALL AND SOLVE THE PROBLEM.. Anybody having out of pocket charge should be rein burst…

  • J RAGSDALE April 17, 2011, 3:00 am

I am going through the same thing. My grandmother passed away. I paid her 2004 Ford Freestar off (7200.00). After paying if off I had to replace wheel bearing hub assembly, then a week later transmission went out. I had it towed to a certified mechanic shop. They dropped the tranmission pan and metel, metal shavings and gears fell in pan.
They told me it would be 3500.00 to fix. Needless to say I was shocked. There is now way a tranmission would just go out that soon.
I refused to make repairs due to price. I had already picked a new car out with Ford. I was selling this vehicle for a down payment on my new car. After this happened they would not even take it as a trade and I am stuck with junk. I have filed a complaint with Ford and they are saying they have no knowledge of any other complaints and can not help me. I know now they lied! They have left me no choice but to have my attorney get involved! Recall is definately in order here!
I dont care if it takes me the rest of my life to fight this and I will not stop until Ford is held accountable for this issue.

  • Barb April 18, 2011, 7:06 pm

I was driving my 2004 Ford Freestar, went down a hill, then as I was accelerating to come back up the hill it completely lost power, no more transmission, like it was in neutral. I was able to get it onto the side of the road, then called a tow to have it towed to a repair shop. It’s at a transmission shop now and $2400 later I’ll hopefully get it back in a couple days. It’s been there for 3 weeks. I filed a complaint with the Ford Motor Co. and with The Center for Autosafety. Is there anything else I need to do?

  • mark April 20, 2011, 12:52 am

well, same as everyone, my 2001 windstar with very low mileage.. 70,000km, coverter failed without any warning, cost me $2100 to fix it.

  • ryan April 22, 2011, 9:29 am

Wow this is really an eye opener…. I have an 05 freestar with the splines on the shaft coming out of the trans stripped out. My wife found this out by driving down the road at about 40 mph when the van with no warning stopped pulling. The van stayed running would rev up but would not go anywhere. towed it to ford and 2100 dollars later and feeling like i just got screwed im finding out that im not the only one. Is there any kind of re-imbursement that anyone is finding out how to get?

  • Mindy Casterton-Humpal April 25, 2011, 4:08 pm

I’d like to be added to the list as well. Similar experience of other owners. Sudden spike in RPM’s followed by vehicle not going into gear. First repair was $1300 from a mechanic that was advised the problem is generally the torque converter and not the transmission. 6 weeks later vehicle will not move/has no power, it’s being towed today and I’m sure I’m looking at a $3,000 repair…. we’ve been loyal FORD buyers for years and it makes me sick. Van has less than 80,000 miles. I praise God that my 3 young children were NOT in the vehicle either time these incidents occurred. I’m even more sickened that there have been over 200 complaints and no solution from Ford.

  • Michael Humanick April 28, 2011, 11:38 am

It happened to me on Wed April 13, 2011. Driving along step on gas, RPM’s rise but my 2004 Ford Freestar van wasn’t going anywhere. The van has only 91,000 miles on it. My transmission shop said there where two problems, first the main seal on the transmission failed. It warping which caused the seal to tear, secondly the main shaft from the transmission to the torque converter would not come out of the torque converter. He stated that both of these issue are factory defects. After spending $3,175.00 transmission is totally rebuilt. Ford should pay for this. Does anybody out there know how to attach pictures to this class action laysuit? If you do please put post here how to post them. I would like to post the pictures of the problems that my transmission shop took.

    • Vicki May 16, 2011, 7:55 pm

I filed a complaint with the NHTSA http://www.nhtsa.gov website about the transmission going in my Freestar. They have now opened the case and are looking into the problem with the torque converter.
Someone from the agency contacted me to see if part of the problem with the transmission failing was the torque converter and if I had a receipt for the cost of the new transmission. I would suggest everyone go to this site and file your complaint it takes 5 minutes you can also look up the cases they opened on Freestar which I found two. If they find Ford at fault we could see our money back.

  • Christina May 4, 2011, 10:44 am

I have a 2004 Mercury Monterey, that the torque converter went out at 80,000. Replaced. Now its going out again. The torque has a shutter to it at certain speeds. Has any one come across this issue and what did you do.

  • ana May 5, 2011, 5:37 pm

same story ford freestar 04 transmision stop without warning…..this is my second time…..

  • Matt Nichols May 7, 2011, 9:51 pm

Same story, duped into 05 Freestar. My wife really likes it, but not today. Second incident, but this time on the highway. Blew out the seals, or something. Torque converter last time. How can I get more info. on this class action suit? Any one know? Thanks

  • E F Mumper May 9, 2011, 6:01 am

I live in Missouri how can get my name on the lawsuit? I had a2005 Freestar Van until a week ago. Had tranny and torque problems without any warning while driving down the highway. The van had only 74000 miles. It had to be towed to a tranmisson shop to be rebuilt. Lost power and tranny warning light keep blinking. This is a big safety issue and FORD MOTORS should be held responiable…

  • Jayne Degaro May 14, 2011, 2:42 pm

Last nite, Mighty Friday May 13th, 2011 husband driving along lost all power had it flatbed towed to Transmission Shop. Waiting Monday to hear the damages! I read these on line before and prayed I would be spared! 2004 Freestar with 78,000 miles! This stinks! Can’t sell it to get any money out of it and hard pressed to sink what sounds like several thousand dollars into!

  • Tammy Owens May 15, 2011, 9:21 pm

I purchased a 2005 Ford Freestar and within the transmission went out going up a hill on a rural highway with absolutely no warning. Paid $3400 to have it replaced at my local Ford dealership with a rebuilt transmission. After having to take it back twice because of little mistakes made by the mechanic, we are now having Powertrain problems again. After listening to the dealership that there were no problems with this make and model and that “you shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet” I am ready for Ford to have to pay to fix it’s mistakes!

  • Alice Tolentino May 24, 2011, 4:11 am

I bought a 2005 Ford Taurus and while driving home on a rainy day, my car just all of a suddent my car accelerator didn’t work and it wouldn’t go in gear. My newborn was with me along with her 5yr old brother, my life and my childrens lives were in a life treatening situation and I was helopless. I will never forget the fear that I felt in that moment. I quickly turn on the hazard light and the car just came to a complete stop just like that. This happended in just less than a minute. Luckly, the car behind me was able to stop and shield my car from other in-coming traffic. All I remember was this kind gentleman or I mush say “my angle” pushing my car to the side of the highway. I was able to get myself together and get help. The car is still in my garage because I can’t afford to pay for a new torque converter, towing and labor. I am depending on my parents to take me around and it’s killing me and my family. We can’t afford to buy another car because we spent our savings on this car and it’s gonna take years to save $ again. It breaks my heart that Ford won’t even help at all and this is why I want to join this law suit !!! My kids are my life and I don’t want any parent to go through what I went through and what I’m going through!!! Our lives will never be played with, I will fight Ford till I go to the grave. What do we do to get in the lawsuit? Do I have to call 1-800-392-3673? Please help. tolentino.alice@yahoo.com

My wife and I have a 2004 freestar . On her way home from the market my wife made a left turn and lost all power . The van had no gears like it was in nutral . It only has 71000 miles . I thank god that it didnt happen in busy traffic . I could have been very bad . I think its rotten that ford lets us hang out to dry . Van is in transmission shop not sure what cost will be . not to mention havent been able to drive it for a year and a half. I would love to see ford have to pay for all repairs.

  • Patricia Delano- Neagle June 9, 2011, 8:09 pm

Yesterday on the road my car jut stopped. Just like everyone else; no warning, no jerks, no grinding, nothing. Not even the engine warning light came on and still hasn’t. I live in the mountains, if this had happened on the highway I would be dead right now.

I have to borrow the money and Ford should be paying everyone back for this. What are they going to do, wait until a family is killed?

I researched this car before I bought it to make sure it was safe. As far as I am concerned Ford has mislead the public and put them at danger.
I am going to contact the Attorney General and file a complaint as well.

Please contact me and please add this model car to the case. Ford Taurus SW 2004

  • CJ-Montana June 14, 2011, 9:42 pm

We own a 2003 F-350 Ford diesel truck since 2008. In the first month of purchase an injector, the turbo (which caused an exhaust leak ) went out and was replaced by a local Ford dealership under the warranty. Since then we have replaced 3 injectors totaling $4000 and now Ford is saying we need to replace another 3 injectors and the solenoid in the turbo to the tune of $2300. We have tried to trade it in but the Ford dealerships are give us very low trade in value for it which makes it very difficult to get out from underneath the problem. We also looked into getting an extended warranty through Ford but it requires an inspection by a Ford Dealer before it can be covered. We are sure that we won’t be eligible due to the nature of the problem engine. We would like to be a part of the class action lawsuit if applicable. Thank you.

  • Jodie June 15, 2011, 12:37 pm

My 2004 Mercury Monterey is currently in the transmission shop. We know it’s an issue with the torque converter but that’s all we know at this time. I’d love to be part of the lawsuit or know if anything has happened with it but it doesn’t appear anyone is responding here.

    • jennifer January 1, 2013, 10:25 am

please share info on class actions suite. im having problems with hesitations. i had the ega valve or what ever its called, i had the torque coverter replace 3 weeks ago and still is having problems.

  • terr wetsel June 16, 2011, 11:06 am

June 4 2011 Thank God traffic was not too heavy on the NYS Thruway when in the outside lane at 65 mph the transmission just went – coasted to the side without incident – as I said Thank God! on our way to vacation – what a start. In the van my 7 year old daughter who survived being born 5 1/2 weeks early – having a feeding tube for the first five months of her life and major Heart surgery at five months old! How dare these people put her life at risk after she has fought so hard to be alive ~ I am beyond words to think that we could have been killed because Ford Motor is selling these vehicles KNOWING THEY ARE DEFECTIVE! What is wrong with this world – we could have been killed don’t they get that? Fix the dam problem already!!!!
And please anyone with this problem file the complaint with the NHTSA – contact your local media – contact your attorney general – Lets start making noise!!!
and yes I am out 3100. – we live paycheck to paycheck – and I am petrified to drive this car again – this whole thing is sickening.

  • Rebecca Butler June 16, 2011, 8:43 pm

This very problem happen with my 2005 Freestar just 3 weeks ago, and it is still in the shop! We were driving along on busy city street and suddenly the car motor was racing like mad, but we were not going anywhere and had totally lost acceleration! Extremely DANGEROUS!!!! We had to pull into the center turn lane and were stuck there until a tow truck could come and get us! There were NO advance warnings of any problems with the transmission or anything. We are now getting ready to leave for a cross country trip to alaska from Oregon, and this is making me very nervous!!! What I want to know is, is Ford going to reimburse us for the money we have had to spend for the repair of it, and how likely is it to go out again? Is there somewhere we can put in a claim? Or do we just call Ford?
    Sincerly,
    Frustrated!!

  • sharon June 18, 2011, 11:37 am

I commented on Oct 01, 2010 about the torque converter going out in my Ford Freestar (very dangerous situation). Thought I had filed a formal complaint w/the NHTSA but have heard nothing from them. How do I join this class action suit? Anyone know?

  • Christopher Bertrand June 19, 2011, 6:29 pm

I am currently sitting at a computer at the Holiday Inn Cicero, NY. Driving back home with my wife and 2 young daughters when all of a sudden my transmission in my 2004 Freestar limited just failed without warning. Thank god no one was hurt or injured as i was travelling at 65 mph. This is just awesome!!!

  • Colin Dussault June 21, 2011, 7:46 am

On March. 2, 2011 I drove 2005 Freestar to bank. Parked it. Finished my errands and attempted to drive home when without any prior warning the van WOULD NOT ENGAGE into gear. No Drive. No reverse. Nothing. I sought shelter from the snow for my 3 year old daughter and myself, emptied van of articles, procured a ride home and arranged for a tow truck to take it to Enhanced Transmission Repair in Cleveland. $1,340.00 (mileage 93,000) later I had a rebuilt / replaced Transmission. Van drove fine until 6/14/11 when it stopped accelerating suddenly in Norton, Ohio on a rural route with a posted speed limit of 50 mph. As I struggled to shift the van into neutral and re-start I kept an eye on the semi tractor trailer barreling in on me from behind in my rear view mirror. I was able to finally get it to sputter and start and stop enough to swerve off the road out of the way of the speeding truck. Luckily my daughter and I were unharmed. I spent the next 30 minutes slowly starting and stopping and nursing the van to a garage where I left it over night. My daughter and I were able to find some friendly strangers to give us a lift to a friends house and then get back home to Cleveland 60 minutes away. I had the fuel filter replaced by this garage($150.00 for diagnosis, parts and labor – $20.00 part). Van ran OK until yesterday (6/20/11) when it once again would not shift into drive or reverse or stay running. I arranged for a tow truck for today (6/21/11). HOWEVER, NOW THE VAN STARTS AND RUNS FINE. I will take to Transmission shop for inspection again and see if the computer is getting wet as has been reported. WHAT A CROCK! I CANNOT TRUST THIS VEHICLE TO get me or my child anyplace safely!

  • Dave Corbett June 23, 2011, 11:51 am

Same thing happen to me and my family. We were on the expressway with tornadoes in the area in Louisville, KY, when our 2004 Freestar just stopped! Engine running, but transmission not working. Coasted to the side of the road and no gears worked. Had it towed to a local transmission shop. Waiting for repair costs?

  • Eva Delgado June 24, 2011, 10:05 pm

Three years ago I was driving on IL @ 6:00am by I55 ( South to North ) at 50 miles when my Mercury Monterrey loose the power, ( my children was in the minivan with me) Thanks god I have time to take a exit. We pay $ 1,500 por repair, buy after 2 years the transsmision was broke again and we pay another 1, 200.00 .
Somebody can help me to find out any legal support !!!

  • Crisse June 24, 2011, 10:21 pm

Coming home from church tonight after drag all of a sudden engine revees up and I am stranded in the middle of a sharpe curve me and my two kids. I was terrified waiting to be hit from behind. Could not get out of the road due to large ditch. Thank God husband was close by and I called and was able to get there before we got hit. I don’t know what to do. I have no money to even try to get it repaired and only 71,000 miles on it. What now?

  • Charles June 26, 2011, 10:02 pm

I think this class action suit is valid and I think Ford should stand behind theyre junk! I have a 2004 Ford Freestar Van That I was driving down the Pa turnpike with,at 65mph on cruise when all of the sudden the tack when to 5000 rpms,so I hit the brake to cancel the cruise and then stepped on the gas and she revved again! No drive at all, so I had to hit the side of the road. No warning of an impending problem whatsoever! It has 85900 miles on it ,which is low milage by todays standards! I had an 87 Dodge Caravan with 235000 on it and no engine or tranny trouble at all. My girl friend is in a wheel chair,we are both disabled and on SSD. Now we have no way to get out or around for anything,as we are not rich like Ford!

  • William Randolph June 29, 2011, 9:25 pm

I just experienced the transmission failure on June 26, 2011. Same story as others – driving 75 mph on interstate 80 in Nevada. RPM’s spiked and my transmission was gone. Coasted to the side of the road (safely, thank God). Had to get a new one to the tune of $3000. The only difference is that the van only had about 38,000 miles on it. It is converted to be wheelchair accessible for my wife, so I have to keep it. I just can’t afford to pay that kind of unexpected cost for a transmission. I really hope this lawsuit can provide some relief.

  • Bernice McHale July 1, 2011, 9:20 am

Story similiar to many stories reported. My 19 year son was driving with the rest of my children in the car. The car (Ford Freestar 2004) just stopped in the middle of a busy intersection. He was able to push the car to the side. The car was towed to an independant mechanic and he diagnosed the problem as stripped splines in the torque converter. We still have two years of car payment since we bought it used and purchased an extended warranty- unfortunately – we are 8,000 over our extended warranty – so we need decide to either get the torque converter replaced or replace the entire transmission with a re-manufactured trans (the upside to the re-manufactured trans is a 3 year warranty). Any thoughts on what I should do?

  • Ben Snyder July 6, 2011, 9:20 am

Does anyone know if this is the same transmission used in the Taurus. We have a 2005 Taurus that just failed on 7/5/2011 with 68,000 miles on it. I am researching and the Taurus is noted for torque converter/shaft spline failures. Can Taurus/Sable owners get included in the class action suit?

and Ford Should Step Up to The Plate–Traveling with my grandchildren down the road when RPM needle going up and speed dropping no accell.power on an extremely busy Hwy. approaching a 4 way stop in 90 degree weather. I coasted safely to side of road & call for a wrecker and for help to get my grandchildren off the road in this heat !! Still awaiting a call from my shop but, after reading this sight I already know I’m looking at the same repeat story I’ve been reading on this sight!! The Only advice is that we stick together and Make as much public notice To Ford As We Can !! When I was Young I well remember some dissatisfied customers dressing up in Lemon outfits and taking their story to the media and guess What the Big Guys Came Down From Detroit At That Time and Met Behind Closed Doors With
Their Dissatisfied Customers!! I don’t remember what the end result was as I was very young but, I do know we must Stick Together and Fight this together until Ford or Whomever backs this Transmission Problem STEPS UP TO THE PLATE AND TAKES CARE OF THIS PROBLEM ! !! I ASK ANY Ford Representatives Would you Trust Your Make Vehicle With Your Prescious Cargo “FAMILY” IN IT? TAKE TIME TO LISTEN TO ALL OF US AND PUT YOURSELVES ASIDE FOR JUST ONE SECOND!! WE WANT STOP UNTIL YOU TAKE CARE OF US!! DISGUSTED CUSTOMER!!

I have a 2004 Mercury Monterey and after only having 88,00 miles on it the transmition has died. I was driving about 70 mph and went to pass a car and lost all power. I did not here a thing just lost all power. I costed off the freeway, got a tow to the mechanic shop and he said it was the transmition and it will be $1,850 for a used one and $2,100 for a rebuilt one. I did not even ask him to fix it because I dont have the money to pay him. I would like to take it back to the place were i got it but the warrenty is up. Please help us FORD !

      Thats 88,000 miles.

  • Dyann P July 25, 2011, 2:13 pm

Us too! Fortunately, my hubby was in the process of slowly backing when it happened to us. He took the ’05 Freestar out of reverse & it never went back into gear. He was able to push it into a parking stall & leave it there until the next day when we could tow it out.

We haven’t gotten it repaired yet, but will this week, as we’re going to a family reunion this weekend. I’ve filed a complaint with http://www.nhtsa.gov, who mandates all recalls.

I’ve also filed a complaint with Ford directly at 1-800-392-3673.

A request for a class-action lawsuit was filed August 9, 2010 in NY (Judy Azose vs Ford Motor Company) that, to my knowledge, has not progressed further than simply a request.

Let’s hope and pray that soon Ford and the NHTSA will realize that this is a real problem. In the meantime, file official complaints and KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS!!!

I, too am having the same problem with my 2004 Freestar. It started a week ago in a Walmart parking lot in Nebraska on a 100 + degree day. I had my 88 year old father and 83 year old husband with me and when we left the store and started the car it wouldn’t move either direction. It was towed in the next day they called saying it was the splines in the tork converter. There had been no warning indicators. The cost, $1800.00. Then they called the next day and said the pump involved had frozen up. $600.00 more. Picked it up and when I got home and engaged Park it rolled backwards down the drive, the door narrowly missing knocking my husband over. On the way back to the service garage I stopped for gas, and again after putting it in park and exiting the car, I turned around to open gas cap and it was rolling backwards on a flat surface. They said it had something with the Parking Pawls and that it was fixed. Picked it up today and the same thing happened with my neighbor in the car. We called and I took it back and tested on a steep incline both going up and coming down. It continued to happen and when I pulled in service center it did same thing and the Service Manager got to experience it. I have been using a rental car 6 days now, mostly at their expense, but that doesn’t make up for the gas driving the 40 mile round trip in the van several times. I want in on the suit.

      What kind of moderation?

I have a 2005 freestar I bought new. Back in April I parked my car in the mall parking lot and when I went to leave it wouldn’t go into any gear whatsoever! I had to be towed to Continental Transmission for a new torque converter. I had to have a car rental for three days. When I went to Northeast auto parts I told the worker I needed a torque converter and she said, “Let me guess. You either have a taurus or a freestar”. I asked how she knew that and she said Ford is having alot of problems with those cars and torque converters. I also have had alot of problems with the electrical system. The driver door ajar alarm goes off everytime I stop and won’t shut off until I am driving 45 miles an hour. I have reslammed all the doors and checked the contacts where the door meets the car. Also my doors don’t automatically lock anymore when I shift into drive. I have to manually push the button down and when I do, the driver door unlocks. Lastly, even though I take my keys out of the ignition the alarm for keys in the ignition with the door open comes on. I have to restart the car and turn it off again to get rid of the loud alarm. I wrote Ford and they have no interest in helping me even though I told them I found hundreds of people with the same problem!

I bought my ’04 Freestar used in ’06. I have been very please with the vehicle with very few problems, until yesterday. I was driving to pick my son up from his bus stop. A couple of miles from our house and about a mile from the bus stop my van suddenly stopped excellerating. There happened to be a lot of traffic at that time. I was able to maneuver my van off to the side of the road. I had the van towed to the Ford dealership, realizing there would be a transmission problem. They were unable to tell me the nature of the transmission problem and recommended I have the trans taken apart for $700. I called a transmission place and they were able to tell me over the phone what the problem was most likely going to be and about how much it would cost: $1200.00. I have had to pay out of my pocket for 2 towings and solicite multiple friends and neighborly persons to help with transportation etc. This has not been fun!

Same story for us….2004 Mercury Monterey with a little over 50K miles when the transmission failed…My husband was on his way to a fishing lodge in Canada and was 5 hours away from home when it happened. He was traveling with 3 teenage boys…he had to have the van towed to a near by repair shop..it was a Friday and they weren’t able to work on it until the following Monday…There he was stranded in New York…tried to get a rental car to finish the trip but they would n’t allow him to take it to Canada….so a friend of ours had to drive 5 hours to where he was at and let him use her car and she had to drive rental car to come back home to Ohio…What a nightmare!!! The Least Ford Can do is reimburse us for cost of the repair…if something isn’t done …we will never buy a Ford again and we will make sure that everyone we know hears our story before they decide to buy a Ford.

I had the same problem with my 2004 Monterey. Torque Converter went. $2,000.00 in repairs. 6 months later the Torque Converter went again. My mechanic replaced it for free. Now it is going again only after a couple of months. At certain speeds the front end vibrates. Very indicitve of the torque converter locking up and failing. There is no cure for this and Ford isn’t bduging. I called the 800 number and registered, but nothing is going to be done about it. I can’t affor to get rid of my hunk of junk and I certainly can’t expect my mechanic to keep fixing it for free. Not sure if you are aware, but the torque converter only costs roughly $200.00, but takes 20 man hours to replace it! I’m a loss of what to do! Wish someone had an answer, but I doubt if anyone has one except GET RID OF THIS PIECE OF JUNK! Never buy another Ford again!

Our 2004 freestar lost the tranny at about 44000 miles, a few years back. It went out, no warning whatsoever, in the middle of a very busy intersection. We towed it to a very respected trans shop, paid $2500 and got a 2 yr warranty. Yesterday it went out again, now the van has 120000 miles and appears to be the same torque converter problem, I’ll investigate farther, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing. The van will not be fixed if it is another $2500, it needs struts, windshield and tires, I guess it will probably be the junk yard for it and the last Ford for me.

  • Jodie Rhees August 3, 2011, 8:23 am

My 2004 freestar torque converter went out while going down the highway….no warning, no lights, nothing!…I pulled to the side of the road thank goodness and sat for two hours for a tow/ride…it is now sitting in ky driveway useless because we do not have the money to fix it…we are now trying to use one vehicle to get us both back and forth to work and our six children to school and sports..it is a nightmare because we will never be able to come up with the two thousand it will take to fix…

it is nauseating to read these stories of torque converters failing! i have a 2004 taurus and my torque converter went out twice in 9 months. i was in a residential area going 25-30 the first time it went out; and 70-75 on i-40 when it went out the second time. i was almost rear ended by a semi because i had NO power. terrified and shaken up, i was towed to the shop. though i did not take it to ford, a (supposedly) reputable transmission shop worked on it. the serial numbers on my receipt from the first job was a ford oem-the number was tracked via a ford dealer. it too, went out 9 months later. it is a couple of months since they worked on it, and i felt i was still having problems, so i took it to a ford dealer today and explained what i had been through and what i was currently experiencing. “check transmission” readout (i never knew i had, and would have been useful BEFORE the tc went out twice) came on and cleared out. the fault was stored under a p1744 code?- tc engage “stuck off”. told to drive in overdrive. is my tc going to go out again??? has anyone had this problem??? maybe this info will help you guys.

2004 Explorer – 88K miles $2000. repairs to transmission. Please advise if their is someone we can contact. I have 2005 toyota truck 200K miles and no problems. Obviously FORD has issues!

  • D Pittman August 9, 2011, 8:17 am

My Ford Freestar is in the Dealership right now getting the torque converter replaced. The car is a 2005 with only 64k miles on it. Cost to repair $1800. I would LOVE to be in on this lawsuit!!!!!!

Similar thing happened to my wife in April of 2011. She had just dropped off two our four kids at a kids camp and was heading home when the van revved with no power. She sat on the side of a rural road with no shoulder for at least 30 minutes until someone stopped and gave her a ride home. No cell coverage. We had it towed home then to a ford dealer ($200) and ford played dumb. I was told they had no idea what the problem was, had never seen anything like this, etc… They diagnosed for $160 which I refused to pay since they claimed they diagnosed the splines on the transmission had stripped out and the $160 diagnostic fee was for connecting it up to their computer and pulling codes. I called BS on them since the splines could not be diagnosed by connecting it to a computer and via google I had come up with the same diagnosis before I had it towed into them. A lot of questions were asked by me about the issues with the transmission that their customers had been having and they denied any and all issues. Even trying to convince me that 64,000 was a lot of miles on a transmission. All the while I was getting more and more frustrated. They still refused to acknowledge that ford might have a larger issue than just me but did give me an estimate of $3700 to fix. I called a local transmission repair shop and they knew all about the issue. They even stock on hand two to three rebuild kits just for this transmission. And the ford dealer know nothing about it! Had the van towed to the local transmission shop (another $100) and he did the work for $2700.

Just a few days ago the van started quitting on her again. This time the engine just dies. Doesn’t matter how fast you are going, accelerating/decelerating, uphill or downhill. It just gives up the ghost and dies. It will restart and run again but once the vehicle heats up it will die every minute or two.

We now have a van that is sitting in our driveway. I have no faith in ford or their mechanics if they won’t even own up to having a major issue with their product. I have owned many, many ford vehicles over the years but after the experiences with this van there will likely not be another ford in my driveway.

I would love to get on this law suit. I have the components that came out of my van when the transmission was rebuilt. You can clearly see how the transmission tore itself apart.

  • Andrea Duarte-Rambo August 16, 2011, 12:11 am

Our 2005 Ford Freestar has had multiple issues. The transmission went out and we had to have it repaired at 102k miles. From the beginning we have had problems losing power on any kind of incline. It is dangerous on highways especially at on ramps or if necessary, to try and pass. That said, the folks at Shawnee Mission Ford have been heroes and have bent over backwards to help in every way they possibly can.

  • gordon nickerson August 22, 2011, 2:21 am

i own a 2002 explorer xls and i just started having issues with the transmission, the overdrive light blinks rapidly and the transmission wont shift outta low gear or revs up to almost red line on the tachometer before shifting i have seen hundreds of complaints over online forums about this is ford doing anything about this?

    • gordon nickerson August 22, 2011, 2:22 am

oh by the way the explorer has aprox 138,000 miles on it

  • Diane M. Powell August 23, 2011, 12:41 pm

Without warning or prior signs of transmission problems, my 2005 Ford Freestar suddenly lost power and would not maintain speed or accelerate. It has less than 60,000 miles. Until I did some research on the internet to determine why a car that has otherwise given me good service died, I was told that I would have to replace the transmission.

  • David Beard August 25, 2011, 10:26 pm

I agree with Mike P. This is not a van issue. I have a 2004 Taurus with 116k miles. Today, Without warning my and going 65 mph the car goes into neutral. I have not had a estimate done and feel blessed that my dad is a mechanic. We will attempt to repair it ourselves.

  • Paul Campbell August 30, 2011, 10:40 am

Transmission light has come on several times over the past three years, but couldn’t find anything in codes until August 26, 2011. Car has 71,000 miles and code PO741 was found. Took it to transmission shop and they are rebuilding a torque converter clutch that is stuck in the “off” position. Cost will be around $1,500 unless entire transmission needs a rebuild then around $3,000. Car has 71,000 miles and has been meticulously maintanted since purchased with 35,000 miles on it.
I want to be a “Ford Fan”, but this is the second time I’ve had to spend a lot of money to rebuild a transmission (the last was an ’03 Taurus.
Any car can have a failure, but when this many people have the same problem, it’s a design defect and should be addressed by Ford Corporate.

  • Ashley Dennis August 31, 2011, 5:58 pm

I just bought my 2004 Ford Taurus with 152,000mi. on it with my Graduation money so i would have a good car for Collage. I got the car from my neighbor whom took outstanding care of it.. and just like everyone else I was driving to work and out of nowhere the motor reved up to about 7000rpm’s and it was like it was in neutral… This really stinks cause I now have to come up with the money to get it repaired so i can get to collage and work… 🙁

  • Patty A. Sabo August 31, 2011, 9:33 pm

2004 Ford Freestar, 98,000 miles, started driving and without any warning other than the TRANSAXLE LIGHT flashing………..the car suddenly lost power and I had no brakes or steering…….luckily I was not going too fast when this occurred. I had to coast down the road to a parking lot and tried to steer the car but could not! I am safe, but this was an extremely scary incident. Try steering and braking a car without no power. Please tell me how I can join this lawsuit, I am so glad I did not have my children in the car when this happened.

  • Dymphna Kerrigan September 8, 2011, 9:28 am

We have a windstar and a 2004 freestar. Problem one started with the windstar and the tranny went and of course warranty was over so we shelled thousands of dollars for that and it wasn’t even paid off at that point!!! Unfortunately, we had already bought the freestar so now we have problem 2 car. I was driving late one night to get christmas gifts and while going around a sharp bend in the road the car just stoppped no warning what so ever. I was lucky that it was late because there were not as many people out. I am just thankful that my kids were not in the car. It was very scary and i am thankful to be alive. How many people have to die before this gets resolved. I will NEVER buy a Ford again it is no wonder they have so many profits to speak of because they are not putting it into the safety of their cars.

I am also an owner of a 2004 Mercury Monterey minivan. This has just started with my van. The van has just over 40,000 miles on it and we are the second owner. I am afraid my wife will have an accident while driving this van. I am going to bring it to the local Ford dealership to have it repaired. I will certainly keep every reciept, note and even the parts removed. I will also be sure to keep the old parts that are replaced and make note that of the new parts installed.

  • Darrell Knox September 11, 2011, 2:17 pm

I puchased Ford, Freestar (2005) in March of 2007. Problems first begin with an unidentified noise that would come and go. I took the van to auto repair shop twice and they were not able to locate the noise coming from the motor compartment. In July of 2011 transmittion would not engage into gear in. After taking the van to auto repair shop again, it started to work again for unknown resons. On Sept. 9th 2011, my famiy and I were on a 300 mile road trip to our see our grandchildren. The transmitting started to jump (ingaging and disingaging) then quit for approx. 80 miles. While pulling a slight uphill grade, the transmittion started to made a grinding noise and then disingaged and would not move in any gear. Leaving us stranded for 4 hour on the side of the interstate (with a 18 month old) in the middle of the night. Not only were my and my wife’s life were put into danger but our young grandson.
