Toshiba Satellite Notebook Computer Class Action Settlement

If You Purchased Certain Models of Toshiba Satellite Brand Notebook Computers Between April 1, 2000 and March 12, 2010, Your Rights May Be Affected By A Class Action Settlement.

A class action settlement has been reached with Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. (“TAIS”) in a class action lawsuit (styled Atherton v. Toshiba Am. Info. Sys., Inc., Case No. CV 08-02141 AG (MLGx) filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California alleging that Toshiba sold certain Satellite notebook computers that contained a manufacturing or design defect that rendered the computers unduly prone to cracking on the plastic housing surrounding the hinges, according to the Toshiba Satellite Notebook Computer Class Action Settlement Notice.

The Toshiba Satellite notebook computer class action settlement reportedly provides that Toshiba will provide reimbursement of the cost of repair or other benefits to qualifying owners of certain models (1000, 1005, 1100, 1105, 1110, 1115, 1130, 1135, 1200, 1715, 1730, 1735, 1750, 1755, 1955, 3000, and 3005) of Toshiba Satellite notebook computers  who purchased a Toshiba Satellite brand notebook computer between April 1, 2000 and March 12, 2010 that experienced cracking on the plastic housing surrounding the hinges, including cracking of the hinges themselves.

If you visit Toshiba’s own website and the community forum at the Toshiba Satellite page, you will see many pages of the exact same complaint: a faulty hinge which stresses and eventually causes the plastic bevel to separate from the screen, commonly cracking the screen. You will also note that Toshiba lists a successful Class Action Lawsuit (“Atherton v. TAIS, Inc) settled in 2012 for the Exact Same Hinge Defect. The details of this lawsuit on at Toshiba’s”Consumer Notices” page. I’m assuming that, as part of the suit, Tosiba was required to post the details on their site (I don’t think they did this voluntarily!) Since my situation is the (also check out sites such as CNET and various high-tech websites) same as the scores of complainants just at the Toshiba site, I would like to find a current lawsuit covering this same defect in current Satellite laptops. The fact that the 2010 suit is exactly the same says that Toshiba has not corrected the problem.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite laptop in Jan 2010. In one month it was in for speaker replacement. At the end of that year it was in for a replaced hard drive. A month after the the warranty ran out it all of a sudden showed 4gb of memory when there was 6. It’s been less than three and a half years old and the motherboard shit the bed. Then I found out that many of the motherboards for that model P505-S8980 also had that problem. Toshiba wants $131 to ship it and diognostic check and it could cost me $390 plus tax to fix it. I like the pc when it worked, but my wife calls it my “lemon”. I don’t think I ever buy or recommend a Toshiba to my worst enemy. Toshiba should step up and fix the problems and save face. When I went to support all they did was try to get me to buy a new one. Lousy support, even worse at fixing a known problem

I experienced this exact problem with the plastic housings around hinges of my Toshiba satellite p845-s4200! I did not drop or damage my laptop the top just came completely off of laptop. It was under a year old and I have been trying to find out what to do. In the Toshiba forums under laptops of my same model there are uncountable amounts of others with the same exact situation! I just discovered that there was a class action suit, I was not notified by Toshiba, and wondering why if not only I but all on the forums of my model are experiencing this same issue that my model p845-s4200 from what I see here is not listed. Does anyone know if I have anyway of recovering any expenses I might incur trying to fix laptop and any ideas how I go about getting my laptop repaired?
