2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Filed Over Inverter Assembly

2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Owners and Lessees File Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Against Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. Over Allegedly Defective Inverter Assembly In 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Vehicles.

A class action lawsuit complaint has been filed against Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. (“Toyota Motor” or “Toyota” or “Defendant”) in the United States District Court for the Central District of California (styled Irina Gaal and Karl Gaal v. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., Class Action Case No. CV 11-02119), alleging, among other things, that Toyota Motors manufactured, marketed, distributed and sold certain 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid vehicles that contained a defect in the inverter assembly that can cause it to fail and cause a vehicle to lose engine power and the ability to accelerate or maintain speed, according to the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Inverter Assembly class action lawsuit complaint.

The 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Inverter Assembly class action lawsuit complaint reportedly is brought on behalf of the following putative class of persons, unless otherwise excluded:

All natural persons in the United States who (i) own or lease a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid that was manufactured with a defective inverter assembly (the “Class Vehicle(s)”) or (ii) currently or previously owned or leased a class vehicle that experienced a failure of the inverter assembly and paid all or some of the cost to repair or replace the inverter assembly.

My 2006 Highlander Hybrid shut down without warning. I had no steering or control over the vehicle. I called Toyota and since it is out of warranty, 150,000 miles they said there is nothing they can or will do. It will cost me $8000 to fix the vehicle and I still owe too much to trade it in.

We are still paying on a 2006 highlander hybrid after being told it was 8000 plus dollars to fix and decided to trade in. What are our rights on not paying now that the inverter has been recalled?!

My 2007 model Toyota Highlander Hybrid bought in May 2007 just shut down while driving after the dashboard warning lights all came on. Toyota dealer says 9k to fix. Same probelm, same story. Toyota tells me VIN # is not part of the recall, but is investigating to see if it can help with the repair. yeah right! Looks like there will be another class action lawsuit filed!

My 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid bought in November 2006 stopped running while driving down the highway. Vehicle was towed to dealership, I was informed that the inverter was bad and that the repair estimate was $9400. The vehicle was manufactured in August 2006 and Toyota tells me that the failure is not covered under the recall for the 2006 and 2007’s that have the same problem. I am looking for information on how to get involved in/find out the status of the current class action suit against Toyota for vehicles with defective inverters that are not covered by the recall.

My 2006 Lexus 400h used the same inverter as that of the Highlander Hybrid. Just like everyone else my vehicle stopped running going down the highway. My repair estimate was $12,000. I heard that the judge in the lawsuit ordered the attorneys for both sides into mediation in November 2011, but have not heard anything since then. I am interested in whether anyone knows of a more current status than last November.

I just had a similar experience. I was driving around 70mph on the highway when my engine quit and the warning check hybrid system came on. Fortunately I was able to coast to the side of the road. First I was told that it was a recall on the hybrid part that went bad and it would be covered at 100%. The next morning I was told that my coolant inverter was bad and it would be over 10 thousand dollars to repair. How do I join the class action suit?

    Hi Mary and others,

I have a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid at the dealer due to inverter replacement too. Similar thing happened, they said it was under warranty on the first day, so they changed the water pump. When they found out it was the inverter, they said it was no longer under warranty! The service department said it would cost me $6000 plus and I bought the used car less than 6 month ago.

I will be looking into lawsuit options as well.

My 2006 has died for the third time. The first two were under warranty and didn’t cost me a dime, though the total “charges” for the repairs (two recalls) were over $12,000.00!!! Now the hybrid system has failed once again and Toyota is telling me the new repair price is “only” $5800. I grew up fixing cars and have replaced or repaired everything from brakes to crankshafts. I understand parts on these new vehicles can be expensive, but $5800??? And that’s supposed to be their new lower price meant to help out those owners who are just out of warranty. Sorry, I’m swapping it for another Jeep or Explorer – both served me well for many more miles than I’ve gotten out of this hybrid. As a technical person, I understand the technology and complications involved in developing and producing a car like this, but would it have been so hard to put a switch in the system so I could simply drive on gas when needed??? Their engineers could have included that feature at a very small price. And I could still be driving the vehicle today until I could get the hybrid system fixed. Are you listening Chevrolet and Ford???

I am also the victim of Toyota negligence concerning the electrical system of the 2006 highlander hybrid.
Repaired the inverter according to recall in January. The electric system collapsed last Saturday: $9300 and no recourse. My car is only 6 years old, 105K miles. Any other car I have had had lasted me more than 10 years without problems. Shame on Toyota for not taking responsibility. Never again!

I too am a the victim of Toyota negligence concerning the electrical system of the 2006 highlander hybrid x 2! My Toyota Highlander Hybrid has died twice, once for hybrid system and now for the inverter… I want to know how I can join the Toyota Highlander Hybrid Class Action Lawsuit …. this car has left me stranded many times… thank goodness for my roadside assistance from Geico, this car has been towed 4 times for defects.

How do I join the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid class action suit against Toyota? My inverter went out on my daughter in 2017. It was replaced under the extended warranty but has now failed again in just over a year. Toyota is saying they won’t repair it rendering the car useless with an $8,000 repair bill
