Class Action Settlement Agreement Announced In Class Action Lawsuit Against The State of Illinois Over Illinois “Institutions for Mental Diseases” or IMDs
The State of Illinois has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit filed against it in 2005 by the American Civil Liberties Union ACLU and other groups who claimed that Illinois violated the civil rights of 4,500 mentally ill persons living in “institutions for mental disease” IMDs by segregating them in facilities and forcing them to live with others with mental illness allegedly in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to a class action settlement news report.
Under the class action settlement agreement, the State of Illinois will reportedly help IMD residents move into community housing. The class action settlement reportedly affects only mentally ill people living in Illinois’ 25 IMDs who could live in the community with services to help them manage their lives.

Now the state of Illinois is, once again, stripping funds away from mental health services. How on earth can they possibly put vulnerable people out on their own without community support services? Sounds like a crisis waiting to start.
