If you are or were a member of The Auto Club Group (i.e, AAA Auto Club South, AAA Chicago, AAA East Tennessee, AAA Michigan, AAA Minnesota/Iowa, AAA Nebraska, AAA North Dakota and AAA Wisconsin) and paid a AAA renewal fee more than 15 days after the expiration date of your AAA membership term and the new AAA membership began on the prior expiration date, your rights may be affected by the AAA Auto Club Membership Renewal Class Action Settlement.
The Auto Club Group, AAA Auto Club South, AAA Chicago, AAA East Tennessee, AAA Michigan, AAA Minnesota/Iowa, AAA Nebraska, AAA North Dakota or AAA Wisconsin(“The Auto Club” or “AAA” or “Defendants”) have reportedly agreed to a proposed settlement of a consumer class action lawsuit against The Auto Club Group a/k/a AAA Chicago and Chicago Motor Club in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (styled as Kowa v. The Auto Club Group, Case No. 1:11-cv-07476 (N.D. Ill.) alleging, among other things, that certain AAA Auto Club Group members paid an annual renewal fee after the expiration date of their membership and had their AAA memberships backdated to the prior expiration date and thus did not receive a full year of benefits from the AAA membership, according to the AAA Auto Club Membership Renewal class action settlement notice.
The AAA Auto Club Membership Renewal settlement class reportedly includes, unless otherwise excluded, anyone who, at any time from November 1, 2005 to November 13, 2013, renewed a AAA membership with The Auto Club Group or AAA Auto Club South, AAA Chicago, AAA East Tennessee, AAA Michigan, AAA Minnesota/Iowa, AAA Nebraska, AAA North Dakota or AAA Wisconsin and paid membership dues for renewal more than 15 days after expiration of their previous AAA membership, but where the new membership was determined by AAA to have started on their previous expiration date.
The AAA Auto Club Membership Renewal class action settlement reportedly provides that settlement class members who are current members of the Auto Club Group will receive 13 months of membership (rather than twelve months) upon their next membership renewal. AAA class members who are former AAA members reportedly can receive the same benefits as current members except they must renew within two years of the settlement’s effective date.

AAA’s policy of backdating is still cheating customers today. I let my policy end in May 14 – on purpose as I had no need of it – then started it again almost three months later in July 14, only to find out they backdated it to my original renewal date. Now, 9 months later, my service is suspended for not paying by that old May renewal date. UNFAIR. This is such a bad policy. So I received only 10 months of service for my money. I’m so mad but have few, if any, options for roadside service in my area. Grrrrrrr.
