Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Linden Research Over Land Sales in Its Virtual World “Second Life”
A class action lawsuit was filed against Linden Research alleging that its virtual world “Second Life” is a bait-and-switch scheme, according to a class action lawsuit news report.
The Linden Research Second Life class action complaint reportedly alleges, among other things, that Linden Research lured Second Life customers by promising in 2003 to confer property ownership rights to Second Life users, but then announced it was open-sourcing its software platform in an aim to move the company away from the land-selling business in what was dubbed the “liquidity event,” which allegedly had the effect of rendering the value of land in the Second Life virtual world worthless.
The Linden Research Second Life class action complaint, styled Carl Evans, Donald Spencer, Valerie Spencer and Cindy Carter v. Linden Research and Philip Rosedale, Case No. 10-1679, was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia).
