Samsung Refrigerator Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Filed Over Alleged Frozen Coil Defect

Samsung Refrigerator Owners File Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Against Samsung Over Alleged Defect That Causes Refrigerator Coils To Freeze Over.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Samsung Electronics America, Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (hereafter “Samsung” or “Defendants”) in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey (styled Jeff Weske, Jo Anna Frager and Darryl Myhre v. Samsung Electronics America, Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Civil Action Case No. 2:10-cv-04811-WJM -MF) alleging, among other things, that Samsung sold refrigerators containing a defect that causes the refrigerators’ coils to freeze over, resulting in the failure of the refrigerator to cool, which has caused consumers to suffer damages for lost groceries, spoilage and repairs, according to class action lawsuit news reports.

The Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit complaint reportedly alleges that certain Samsung French door, side-by-side and bottom freezer refrigerators (model numbers RF266AASH, RS263BBWP, RB1955SH, RS2533SW, RS267LASH, RS267TDRS, RS2630WW) the refrigerators are designed and manufactured with heated coils that are intended to prevent excess frost from developing in the back of the machine, but instead of preventing frost, the coils allegedly allow frost and ice to build up in the refrigerators until the ice clogs and/or disables the machine’s fans, making it impossible for the fans to work to keep the machine cool.

The Samsung refrigerator coil class action lawsuit complaint is reportedly brought on behalf of the following putative class members, unless otherwise excluded:

All persons or entities residing in the United States who own, or have owned, Samsung refrigerator models RF266AASH, RS263BBWP, RB1955SH, RS2533SW, RS267LASH, RS267TDRS, RS2630WW and/or any other Samsung refrigerator model containing a defect that causes the refrigerator’s coils to ice over and the refrigerator to stop cooling.

I purchased the Samsung Refrigerator Nov 27th 2010. Just noticed the ice coming through the small slots on the back panel of the refrigerator yesterday. The fan is making a racket and the refrigerator is not cooling properly. Please add me to the class action lawsuit.

Im in the same boat coil freezing over and fan rubbing on ice from the refrigerator not defrosting. How do I get added to the Lawsuit?

I bought my Samsung refrigerator around may 2012 (RF263BEAESR) and I’ve had Sears fix my cooling system 2 times and the problem still persist.
I paid around $2500 for this refrigerator with the mentality of “if I pay a lot of money I should get something good that I won’t have to worry about for at least a decade” boy was I wrong.

My Samsung side by side model # RS267LASH-XAA, has been freezing the food in the frige for over 6 months now. I have to put any food that I do not want frozen on the middle shelf or higher. I have had the coils cleaned and the drain hole cleared a number of times, I set the temp at it’s highest setting and it still keeps freezing up. I am not happy with Samsung!!

    • Chris Smith March 9, 2015, 10:58 am

I”d be interested in knowing if you’ve gotten this fixed finally and what the solution is. I’ve been experiencing the same issue for about 6 months now and am trying to get it resolved. Samsung support is awful. I’ll never purchase a Samsung product again and this stems more from the lack of support than the product itself. I understand some products fail. What I don’t understand is a total disregard from the company to do something about it, particularly a multi-billion dollar enterprise such as Samsung.

My samsung refrig is a lemon, when I first purchased it it went out a few weeks, then they brought me a different one and soon the cooling of the refrigerator went out as we were wondering, why , sour milk, they nicely came out and replaced something, toall a long story short , I was told by the store I purchased it that my warrenty was done, now I find out I had a four year all along, 4pnths after the fact, now I have a very new looking refrig, that doesnot work, freezer is great, but the refrig frosts all up inside with no circulation, very sad and unable to have it serviced because of cost!! What a shame!!

  • joseph lorms November 26, 2014, 11:01 pm

Been having this problem for two plus years…and have spent a lot of money with no regular performance….how can I get this fixed or compensated for the issue?

  • Tamara Harris December 2, 2014, 10:47 am

I have had my Samsung side-by-side serviced several times for coils freezing up. The auto defrost has never worked, work, and the instructions on how to force the defrost never has worked. I finally figured out how to take it apart myself to avoid paying for a repair service time and time again. It becomes so frozen, it takes sometimes up to 36 hours to thaw even with the panel removed. In the meantime I’ve lost $$$$$ in groceries. At this writing it sits in the middle of my kitchen floor, unplugged and empty … defrosting again. Groceries in the trash.

    • cary wood October 30, 2019, 10:46 pm

Have you been compensated for the crappy fridge that you accidentally bought?

  • John Masotta December 3, 2014, 8:40 am

I bought a side by side with bottom freezer just over a year ago (warranty just expired) Called Samsung without a response and called again the second day and got the name of an authorized repair company CONE APPLIANCE REPAIR and gave them the confirmation number 5110195973 and and a transaction number 2131822142. Their response was that they could be out in a week or so. A full refridgerator and freezer full of food is rapidly spoiling. We are seniors and feel totally helpless. This is just not right.

  • John Masotta December 3, 2014, 8:45 am

I bought a side by side with a bottom freezer just over a year ago. I called Samsung and got the name of an authorized dealer. CONE APPLIANCE took the transaction number 2131822142 and the confirmation number 5110195973 and advised that they can be out in a week or so. Full fridge and freezer of spoiling food. Seniors feeling helpless 🙁

I have a model SAMSUNG RF 267 that has been doing the same thing for several years. Is this model part of the Lawsuit too?

  • steve December 4, 2014, 6:52 pm

I know many of you speak about defrosting for hours. Just do like I do.. first unplug. take the shelves out. Pull off the panel. Take a spray bottle of hot water and go to town. Try and stay away from any cords. Put together and plug back up. Takes like 30 mins vs 24 hours. I’ve done mine about 5 times already. I know we shouldn’t have to do this but.. it is what it is.

    • KR Wise December 5, 2014, 8:32 am

Samsung will not do anything for you. We purchased ours in 2009 from Sears and had trouble shortly after we purchased it. Repairs, repairs, ordering parts. Complaining about weird noises, freezing in fridge part, water dripping, you name it. We had lost food which is very expensive. This happened twice and that was half the cost of a new fridge. If you add up your food losses, you could buy a new refrigerator. We sent all our paperwork to the New Jersey attorneys handling the class action suit. Just posting here is not enough. We got a letter back saying they had received it.

Anyway, we junked it and bought a Whirlpool french door one, which we love. It has also dawned on us how much better our food is keeping. Apparently, the Samsung has these wide ranges in temperature and unless you are inside with a thermometer you might not know it. We did keep a log. It would vary by 20 degrees at times. The repairman said that was cuz it was defrosting………not. We chose a company and a fridge that did not use this repair company. You are at the mercy of the repair company under warranty and Samsung sold at a variety of stores here uses the same company. This is so stressful, I know, ours sat 6 weeks one time waiting for parts. I cheered when they hauled it out. Never will buy anything Samsung again…….one of the repair guys did say don’t buy Korean products, so that is Samsung and LG. He is now working for another company.

      • Francesca preples March 10, 2015, 8:59 am

Can you post the attorneys information? I can find any links that work on this page.

  • Leah Cross December 13, 2014, 7:37 pm

    Model # RS265TDBP
side by side purchased new April 2012. Cooling erratic from start, stopped last spring with repairman coming after 8-9 days of waiting, then just looks at the appliance and tells us to defrost the coils for 48 hours. Now doing it for second time December, 2014, and have defrosted it myself again before the repairman has even called me back to set appt. This is obviously a design flaw. My husband and I are in 50s, working full time, cooking very little, and can’t imagine the performance of this fridge in a home with an active family!
    Please help.

  • charles milliron December 19, 2014, 10:04 am

model #rf268abwp Yesterday the cooling fan started making a loud noise for the second time in two years.I removed the inside cover and the coils were all frozen over with a hugh chunk of ice hitting the fan. it takes about three hours to remove all the food and trays from this ref. and melt the ice and reinstall the cover. If you don’t know what you are doing, don’t do this yourself. please add me to the lawsuit.

  • Pete armijo December 21, 2014, 1:33 pm

Been having the same issue with my refrigerator from samsung RS267LASH-XAA its freezing my stuff in the refrigerator part and my diabetic medication froze I had to go to the emergency room please tell me when this lawsuit goes in to affect

  • William Wilkison December 22, 2014, 12:27 pm

I purchased one of these refrigerators (Model rf267 AEWP, Serial Number JJ0D4GBB600ss7P) in 2011. Since owning it, about every 2 – 4 months, I have to remove ALL food from the refrigerator compartment, turn the refrigerator off, remove the rear plastic panel in the back of the refrigerator compartment, and spend 2 to 4 hours defrosting the coils AND the defrost melt water drain line. This line (roughly 18 to 24 inches long) goes from refrigerator compartment, down the back of refrigerator behind the freezer drawer, and supposedly delivers “auto”-defrost melt water to a tray on the bottom of the refrigerator where it evaporates with the fan blowing across the condenser area. Sadly, it doesn’t work this way, because water in this line freezes, stops up the line, then the defrost liquid water runs inside the refrigerator, floods the area below the fresh food drawers, which then overflows to the bottom freezer compartment which completely freezes this drawer in place. It also freezes up the cooling coils which causes the refrigerator to stop cooling. The whole clean out process takes half a day, and costs anywhere from $100 to $300 for a repair person to make a call to do the work (if I don’t do it myself).
This is a design defect that will be present for the life of this refrigerator. Having to do this every 2 to 3 months is unacceptable. This refrigerator should be replaced with a system that works properly.

    William Wilkison

    • John Caldwell December 27, 2014, 10:14 am

You took the words right out of my mouth. Same model! Same problem. I HAVE HAD IT SERVICED 6 TIMES AND LEARNED MORE AND MORE EVERY TIME. REFRIGERATOR REPAIR PEOPLE HAVE GIVEN UP ON ANY EFFECTIVE SOLUTION. THE DRAIN HOLE WILL CONTINUE TO FREEZE REGARDLESS OF NEW HEATING PROBE ATTACHED AND INSERTED INTO THE HOLE.
ARE YOU READING THIS SAMSUNG? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Katherine December 23, 2014, 12:33 am

I purchase a RF266AEPN and it has the same problem after having it for a year. Have Sears out to repair it and it has happen again after couple of years. Now it is freezing again.
How can I join the class action lawsuit?

  • Shirley Meinheit December 25, 2014, 4:30 pm

We currently own a Samsung model RS267TDRS refrigerator. We have had repair personnel out repeatedly to fix this issue. The last time the technician told us to unplug the unit and let it defrost for 24 hours. Please add us to the lawsuit.

  • James Hurry December 27, 2014, 10:09 pm

I have had to thaw the ice out of the circulating fan several times. Continues to freeze up. I would like to know what thee progress of this class action lawsuit..

    Sincerely ,
    James

  • sung baek December 28, 2014, 1:18 am

I have had the same problem ever since 2011. Would be great if somebody could find solutions for this. Please add me to the class action in the mean time.

  • Sonny Simonian December 29, 2014, 12:47 pm

Second time in the two years of owning the rf217acwp that the defrost issue has cropped-up. So far that one has run us about $500 in repairs and lost food. This last time, the ice maker stopped working as well as the compressor.

I just want to say, a class action lawsuit is being fairly lenient on Samsung.

  • Bill Williams December 30, 2014, 2:19 pm

The RFG298HDRS has the same issues. Middle drawer freezes up completely. Samsung and Lowe’s play the dumb game if you contact them. Does anyone know if replacing a defrost sensor will help the problem?

  • Beverly Cobb December 30, 2014, 9:50 pm

Bought my Samsung refrigerator model RM255LASH in 2007 I have had freezing issues cooling in fridge part issues water dripping from the filter housing I have replaced so many parts and still not able to fix the problem. Please add me to the class action suit. This appliance was too expensive to just throw out!

  • Tricia December 31, 2014, 9:52 am

This is my 2nd post. I purchased the Samsung RF217ACWP 2 years ago from Lowes. I experienced ongoing problems with water in the crisper drawers, and then the entire back of the refrigerator froze solid and the fan started making a loud racket. I paid over $400.00 in parts and labor this past October. The serviceman told me it was a known problem, and he sees it regularly. When I called Samsung, the tech told me he showed nothing in their database for this issue on my model. Then he told me I might keep too much food in my fridge. For 2 months everything seemed fine, and I thought the problems were behind me. Now the fridge isn’t holding temperature and rises up into the 50’s. The tech came back and informs me the defroster is not working. The entire back panel is frozen once again. Parts and labor will be over $200.00. I told him Samsung says they have no record of any problems and he laughed. Then he showed me on his tablet of at least 5 published Service Bulletins and 6 Known Service Tips from Samsung on my specific model alone. Once again, I’ll have to empty the fridge and let it thaw for 2 days before it can be repaired. I will be contacting the attorneys with full information and joining the class action lawsuit. I’ve never experienced such poor Customer Service or complete lack of accountability from such a large corporation.

  • Kerry Mitchell January 1, 2015, 12:15 am

Yes please add me. Bought ours in December 2009. Been having issues so much food wasted over this garbage of a refrigerator. Spending my new years eve defrosting it once again had a repair man out fixed it before. Ice machine won’t work so have to keep ice in the freezer part as it can’t get cold enough to make or keep ice. I won’t ever purchase another Samsung again!

  • Stephen Childers January 2, 2015, 8:06 am

I also own the the Samsung RS267LASH. I had same problem with my fridge coils freezing up. I had to have the defrost heaters/cool coils replaced AT MY COST!! Also the from freezer door metal around the water/ice dispenser is rusting out with surface rust from moister making ti the veneer metal around the bezel. I have contacted Samsung and they could give a shit less. I have posted pictures and spread the word that samsung appliances are JUNK! !

    • KR Wise January 13, 2015, 1:23 pm

Can’t emphasize this enough. Just saying you want to join in the suit is not enough. Read the beginning of this thread for info on where to send your paperwork.

Samsung could care less. You are wasting your time and money. We junked it and I have never been so relieved as when they hauled that junker out of the house and put in our new fridge.

Look at the floor space these stores give Samsung. I think there must be some deal going on with this whole thing.

  • Pedro Choca January 3, 2015, 11:02 am

We purchased a Samsung RS267TD in July 2010. Soon after the warranty had expired, we had the same problem with the unit not defrosting. We had to call the Sears repair company and they charged us $200 to defrost it. We have had to do it ourselves twice more. There was another problem while it was still under warranty, and they had to replace the control module at that time.

  • Jeff January 3, 2015, 12:56 pm

I have an RS267TDRS that was ordered in April of 2010 and took delivery in June of that year. Not too long after putting into the house began having problems with the condensing fan making a constant noise. I replaced the fan with a new one and while repairing it, I noticed fan was full of ice. Removed the ice and put back together. Worked fine for a couple months and then refrigerator was displaying a high temperature. It was also making the noise again. Placed a thermometer in unit and it was not properly cooling. Contacted Samsung and a technician came out, costing me $80 to inspect it. Said it looks like the PCB main and PCB assembly will need replaced at a cost $586. I obtained the parts at repairclinic.com for $200 and snapped them in. Also had to de-ice the condensing fan again. Worked fine for awhile and then fan started making noise again. Got into the refrigerator yesterday 1/2/15 and the refrigerator temp was 56. De-iced the condensing fan again and overnight it went back down to temperature of 38 degrees. Now the refrigerator temperature is flashing, which means there is a problem. The refrigerator does not seem cool. Just got home from the grocery store with hundreds of dollars worth of groceries.

  • David Samples January 4, 2015, 2:10 pm

We purchased a Samsung RF266ABPA refrigerator in 2008. We continue to have icing problems and repeated manual defrosting of the coils. I was unaware of a class action lawsuit and am attempting defrost and repair myself after learning this from repair videos on the internet. I have always indicated that this was a poor design as we have also experienced ice maker problems regularly due to little space between the ice bucket and top of the freezer drawer. During the second year of ownership the computer board also had to be repaired. Please inform me of the correct way to be included in the class action law suit . I hope it is not too late to be included.

    • Robert Dubay January 26, 2015, 7:56 am

We have had the same coil freezing problems and had ice maker replaced. Ours is Model RF267ABRS. We just had the drain coil flushed out last week due to water pouring out the bottom of refrigerator and ice is already forming inside of the back of it again. Is there a class action on this model, if not how do I get onboard????

  • Corey Blevins January 5, 2015, 9:57 pm

I’ve fought this coil issue the entire life of the fridge, 8 years. Please add me to the class action lawsuit if possible.

  • derrick January 6, 2015, 10:13 pm

We have had our fridge for about 2 years and it froze up. Currently thawing hoping it works tomorrow. Model # rs263tdrs. Please add me to this lawsuit.

  • Pam Huffines January 7, 2015, 5:15 pm

bought rs267lash samsung refridgerator and it is a total lemon. had 2 repair people out, finally replaced the heater and ice maker 2 weeks ago and now no water from despenser. It isn’t cooling in fridge either. Unbelievable.

  • ernie lang January 9, 2015, 3:08 pm

I am canadian from northern ontario .bought rs263td in 2011 about every six months i have had to remove shelving and cover to de-frost internal coils.I also purchased stove/dish washer over counter microwave ,OH also purchased $8000.00DLP 56 inch flat screen samsung tv.in 2006 that after 2 months at service shop came back with a $900.00invoice for repairs.1 year ago microwave door and electronics had to be replaced ,2 years ago dishwasher would not function spent days talking to service in florida and gave up so being previous samsung dealer and a retired service tech.fixed it myself .So how can I get onboard I would love to send a statement to samsung letting them know that it is all about service and not just profit!! Thank You Ernie Lang.

  • Chris Dunham January 15, 2015, 12:42 pm

Purchase a Samsung French Door Refrigerator in January 2011 from Lowes. It started acting up around December 26, 2014. Ice began to come through the holes on the insde of the refrigerator. The freezer completely quit cooling soon afterward. Now the refrigerator will not cool either.

  • susan dubay January 15, 2015, 4:44 pm

I think the model rf267abrs should be added to the lawsuit. Water stand inside the bottom of the refrigerator, freezes over and leeks out on the floor. We paid a lot of money and did not get the quality we paid for.

  • Andrew Stevermer January 19, 2015, 7:37 am

Purchased the RS267TDWP$1240 on 12/10/10. Began having icing and evaporator van motor failure on 9/10/13. Paid almost $300 to replace motor. Now I am having the same problem. This is clearly a design failure. Please add me to the law suit.

  • Sharon Casserly January 20, 2015, 12:00 pm

I have owned a Samsung refrigerator for 6 months and have had a tech out 4 times to defrost the freezer!

  • Sandra Dyer January 21, 2015, 5:26 am

How to sign up for this class action suit.

  • Glenda January 24, 2015, 1:15 pm

I purchased a Samsung RF267 a couple of years ago from Lowe’s. The coil freezes up every 3-4 months, water stands in the bottom of my refrigerator and then it freezes and I can’t open the bottom drawer. I have pulled it all apart multiple times to defrost and clean up. NOT what I expected from a $2200 appliance! VERY disappointed in the brand!!

  • James Grunewald January 25, 2015, 8:16 am

I have a Samsung RF266AEBP side by side that the back panel has frozen three 3 times in past year and half lost food and lost time please add me to the lawsuit

  • James January 25, 2015, 4:24 pm

Any update on the class action? My RF266AEWP has the same problem.

  • alfred fredricks January 29, 2015, 5:36 pm

I bought a complete Samsung kitchen set from lowes in 2012.a month after the warrenty was over, the refrigerator started to not cool and the fan was making a racket.two times a repair man came out and attempted to repair it to no avail. both lowes and Samsung could care less about their customers as they both said they could do nothing as it was out of warrenty.please add my to your lawsuit.

  • Joseph Corsini January 30, 2015, 1:43 pm

Please add me to the class action law suit. My unit continues to freeze up and stop functioning. This happened twice in the last 12 months. We had 2 other repairs on our unit during this same timeframe. Samsung customer service promises support and does absolutely nothing.

  • PAUL MC TIERNAN January 30, 2015, 7:41 pm

My wife and I purchase a Samsung 3 door bottom freezer model RF268acrs/xxa in December 2011. Several times we have had to remove all the food in the refrigerator and unplug the refrigerator and allow the Twin coolers to defrost. Another problem this refrigerator has is the water drain that comes off natural from the coils of the frig and freezer, the drip pans area gets clogged and the water drops to the bottom of the freezer compartment. This was an expensive Refrigerator 2500.00 I would expect more out of Samsung and the Retailer LOWE’S. Pictures if needed. Currently we are shopping for a new refrigerator. SAMSUNG put more reliability into your product.

  • A D February 1, 2015, 12:20 pm

I purchased the refrigerator in Nov. 2013. Model #RF217ACRS. It has started to freeze the drainage pipes and started to leak water in to the crisper bins. It took 24 hours to defrost and when we turned the refrigerator on it froze again. Please add me to the Class Action lawsuit

  • Peter W. February 1, 2015, 2:19 pm

We bought our Samsung Side-by-Side Refrigerator in July 2010 and within two years our fridge side stopped working. My husband did some research online and read about the coils freezing up. He watched a YouTube video on how to defrost and fix the issue. Sure enough, after 5 hours with a blow dryer, we were able to melt the ice around the coils and within a few hours our fridge was working normally again. We were hoping that this was a one-time issue. But, of course, it wasn’t. Every 6 months we have had to sit for 4-5 hours with a blow dryer and clothing steamer defrosting the ice that freezes over the fan and coil. We have had to do this about 4-5 times since we have had the fridge. Please add us to the class action lawsuit. WE WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER “SAMSUCK” PRODUCT AGAIN!!!!!

  • eric February 2, 2015, 1:31 pm

model: RS267LABP. freezer coils frost over, leading to the fridge not cooling properly. defrosted the fridge for half a day letting the ice melt off of everything, plugged it back in now the numbers on the fridge display aren’t showing correct freezer temp, ice will freeze in the freezer on the bottom not the top. fridge is around 60 degrees.

  • Richard Phillips February 3, 2015, 9:44 pm

My RS263 fridge Has noise coming from fan, Coils freezing, not cooling. I want in on this class action law suit.

  • Connie valencic February 7, 2015, 12:51 pm

I have a Samsung French door bottom freezer and I have to defrost every four months. Could you please add me to lawsuit

  • Michael F. Nichols February 10, 2015, 11:46 am

I have a Samsung RF267AERS/XAA and the condensation drain tube freezes up thus runs water under the bottom tray which then freezes. One has to disassemble the inside back pannel, take a turkey baster, with hot water, squirt into the drain tube until it unfreezes and drains water into the drip pan under the refrig. 30 days later, same problem. I’ve changed the fan motor and sensor and the problem still presists. Telephone calls to Samsung regarding this fault and they deny any problem. Go to the web and it is full of complaints regarding this problem including a video showing how to attempt to fix it.

  • Brenda February 11, 2015, 8:55 pm

I bought my Refridgerator from Sears in 2010 and it has a 5 yr warranty but no one can find a record of it. The Samsung Company sent a serviceman out but he could not fix it. The freon line has a leak that is in the inside walls of the Refridgerator. They said they would do a buy back program but I haven’t found a reciept. I’ve been raising 6 grandchildren and taking care of a total of 18 people. The ice maker went out first then the freezer went out and it is a mater of time before the whe thing goes out. This is an internal problem so the company should just replace it and be done with it. All I want is My Refridgerator working. Replaced with the same style I have. The Company knows my Refridgerator was put out in the stores in 2009 the end. I called them after trying everything to get to the right place, I contacted them Jan. 3 or 4. I know I bought my fridge in July or August of 2010. I even sent them a picture with a price for what they sold for at Sears that same time. But I still have a bad Refridgerator and no news from Samsung ang I NEED that fridge WORKING NOW.
    Help. Please

  • Steve Lawson February 12, 2015, 8:24 pm

Shortly after the warranty was up on our Samsung refrigerator started freezing up. Called Samsung and they told us that they had no problems with their refrigerators freezing up. So we just have to deal with it or buy a new one.

  • Anna Cook February 13, 2015, 12:51 pm

We purchased a French door Samsung RF267AERS from Sears about 3 years ago. It has a lot of cooling, freezing, and water collected at the bottom of fridge like everybody mentioned. Recently it is getting worse. The temperature inside fridge and freezer went up high and I’m afraid the food will be spoiled. Please add our model to the class action lawsuit. It seems it isn’t worth to spend money to fix it.

  • Wes L. February 14, 2015, 10:57 am

I will never buy another Samsung appliance. I will also tell everyone I know not to buy a Samsung appliance. Our RS267TDRS is a decorative paperweight. The ice maker has always sounded like a helicopter and after the one year mark it refused to switch back to dispensing cubed ice. The chute design also causes ice to go everywhere but into the cup your attempting to fill, and there is not a sufficient ice tray to collect water or melting ice. But that is beside the point. At nearly the two year mark the compressor began to get very noisy and I notice water starting to collect in the bottom of the unit. I immediately pulled the unit away from the wall and cleaned any exposed parts of dust from the back side of the unit. The inside temperature rose to over 48 degrees and I had noticed that the evaporator fan, which is located on the fridge side behind the lower drawers, began to make a scraping sound. I dismantled the shelving and cover, and discovered a massive ice block behind the fan cover which was also seizing up the fan. I defrosted all the parts with a hair dryer, reassembled and all was working well again. I also performed a reset via the front panel controls. I had assumed this freeze up was caused by the door being left open overnight and the unit trying to maintain the inside temperature. I was wrong. A few weeks later I went to retrieve some coffee creamer out of the fridge and could tell the temperature was extremely warm. I checked it with an oven thermometer and it registered 52 degrees. The compressor was still cycling but I could not hear the fan running. Three days passed and the fan running intermittently. I went to the local appliance parts warehouse a picked up a replacement fan for $50. I decided to look up the service manual online to get the instructions for replacing the evaporator fan. That’s when I stumbled across this website regarding a class action lawsuit against Samsung for a design flaw. I will be returning the fan and shopping for a reliable brand of refrigerator on Monday.

I am angry that a refrigerator of this price hasn’t even lasted three years. My parent’s Whirpool ran with no problems for over 20 years before needing replacement. While I don’t expect zero problems over the lifespan of an appliance, I do expected a reasonable time period of reliable performance. To me “reasonable” is longer than three years. What is most disheartening is the comments of posters stating that Samsung will not take any action to resolve a common defect with their product. If Samsung would like to contact me and salvage the tarnished image of their brand, I am open to hear what they have to say. But as a billion dollar corporation, what concern is it of their’s that I have spent $1300 dollars on a single appliance and lost a few hundred dollars in groceries. It should be the principle of the matter. It should be that even if one customer has had a terrible first experience with their brand, that it is at least noted that they failed massively in the mind of the consumer. If Samsung really cared about customer loyalty and faith in their brand name, they should offer those of us with similar product failure a replacement or a buy back program.

I too have a Samsung RF217ACWP french door refrigerator that I have had for about 3 1/2 years. It never acted up and froze until the summer of 2014. I called a tech out and found out to that the whole back of the refrigerator compartment was froze up including the drain. I have also noticed that the paint on the door handles have started to peel off. Today my frig sits off and open for the third time while it thaws the drain. I use a hair dryer to unthaw and remove the back panel. I have found no quick way to thaw the entire drain though other than leaving it sit. I have lost no food since I can take it to my brothers house and put it in their freezer and frig. I watched the tech the first time to learn how to take it apart and now do it myself but am wondering if the defrost circuit is not working. It makes not sense to me to abandon a practically new frig to buy another one. I just want mine fixed and fixed right so this doesn’t happen again.

I purchased a Samsung French Door Refrigerator Model # RF217AB PN on March 22, 2010. I have had frozen ice going down into the vegetable crisper drawers for around three years now. I have just put up with this as I cannot afford to purchase another Refrogerator. I cannot put any food into the right drawer, which is the worse, and have to put towels in the rear of the other drawer so I can put some food in it. Recently I have gone online and read numerous comments from people who are having similiar problems. I even posted on one web site why did we not have a class-action lawsuit going. I found this website and would like to know how to sign up? If anyone has this information, please e mail it to me. bobsrmary@aol.com

I have a 2005 Samsung side by side , model rs253babb/xaa . I’ve had nothing but problems with it . the coils freeze up 3-4 times a year . I’m constantly thawing it out . I’ve replaced many parts including having to buy a new back panel from having to take it apart so often when frozen in place. It has ruined my floor in my kitchen under the piece of junk from water from thawing it out no matter how careful I am . I hate this fridge and will never buy another Samsung product . and will tell and hope everyone will tell everyone they know NOT to ever buy a Samsung product . They are junk !!!!!! If anyone can help me with a class action suit , I will be more than happy to join in !

Hello. It seems some people write absolute BS here. I have been owning Samsung side by side fridge 4 years now and it has been the best fridge I have had. It is beautiful outside and inside is nicely lighted compared to many others. Ice making seems to be a bit slow, but I have no problem for 4 family members unless I have a party – well, I have second fridge in the basement for that purpose. Last week, suddenly refrigerator side was not cooling while freezer side was working fine. I did a lot of Google search and found a nice website – Repairclinic.com (I have no intention to advertise a company, but I just like to share) It suggested which part might be bad for the problems I had. I like to fix things in the house myself so I opened up the refrigerator panel (back inside of food section) and was able to separate the evaporator fan and tested the motor with the multi-meter that I bought long time ago from Radio Shack. Wires were not totally open (burnt), but the resistance was something like 30K. The resistance should be close to 0 if the fan motor is good. So I ordered a fan motor and replaced. The part costed me $60 ($50 + shipping). Now, the refrigerator runs perfectly fine and I am so proud of myself (also made my wife so happy).
I hope the fridge continue to serve many more years – I can replace another motor if it burns, but maybe the original one was not good – sometime there is bad part.

    • RA Wise February 23, 2015, 9:28 am

In reply to the comment about people writing BS in this column. That is quite an assumption from you. Good for you that you fixed your fridge, many cannot. Maybe you should volunteer your expertise with Samsung since the customer service gives people zero help and just the runaround. Guess your engineering degree is serving you well???

    • JamesMac February 23, 2015, 1:16 pm

Same problem here that can’t be attributed to a bad part as was suggested. Completely frozen coils and drain every few months. Bottom freezer (which I think is key) RF267 bought in 2010. Really disappointed after having spent a huge amount of money. I would also love to know how to get in on this lawsuit as we have lost quite a bit of food to spoilage over this time.

I’ve had my Samsung for 9 years and for the past four years, I’ve had problems. We never knew what the cause was, blamed it on my sister for consuming too much ice. The ice maker doesn’t work right, the water has been pooling in the freezer then freezes and pushes out the bottom drawer then freezes it in place. Now the refrigerator unit is not getting cold. Took off the interior back panel and found frozen coils with ice beginning bulge out the plastic cover. I purchased a Samsung RM255LASH/XAA and paid about $3600. My last refrigerator I purchased from Gemco and I finally sold it after 20 years, no problems. How refreshing to see that I’m not alone, but sad that I’m in the company of people who are losing money too. Hope we can find the parts and fix, but like someone else mentioned, I paid a lot of money for this refrigerator . . . it should have a life longer than 5 or 6 years. Please add me to the lawsuit!

    • Pat March 29, 2015, 11:22 am

Hi! I am having the same exact problem as you. Repair guy was out 2 days ago and stated to replace the motor he would have to weld it and the Sparks could cause cabinet damage. Did you have to weld anything? He did get the refridge back running by spraying hot water and defrosting but when testing the motor said that was the part that needed to be replaced which included welding and probably 3 hours of labor. Let me know your thoughts to save me some money. Thanks.

      Pat

How do I become a part,of the lawsuit? Defrosting as I text and the water dispenser no longer works..

  • Salvatore Aversa February 21, 2015, 2:02 pm

Same exact thing just happened to my fridge. It’s only 4 years old. And the “authorized repair shop” is shady at best, and crooks at worst.

  • josh February 23, 2015, 12:56 am

Have the rf217acpn french door refrigerator and started noticing the cooling fan making a noise and discovered the entire coil was frozen over and got so bad it stopped the fan all together. I unplugged and manually defrost it because there’s no other way to do so. Don’t have the money to buy a new refrigerator so I manually defrost it. It’s quiet in convenient being it’s a well known brand. I’m very disappointed and frustrated. Thanks josh.

  • Tom Hodge February 23, 2015, 11:03 am

I purchased a 4267 HARS at Lowes, now after a year and a half, I have the icing issue. Samsung has been worthless on the issue. Today, I am forced to go buy a small refrigerator so that I can transfer my food while defrosting for 3 to 4 days. In the past, I have had good luck with appliances lasting a good 12 to 30 years. This is the last Samsung product I will be buying.

  • Deirdre L Andrews February 23, 2015, 3:22 pm

  • Dave Youngblom February 23, 2015, 4:49 pm

I too, have had refrigerator issues for abouty 2 years. Please add me to the lawsuit.

  • chris February 25, 2015, 7:50 am

Samsung should own up and be responsible for their product. I am having same problem as everyone else with RS267 model refrigerator not getting above 50 degrees and ice build up. how do I get in on this and make Samsung own this problem?

  • Patrick DeBauche February 28, 2015, 3:47 pm

My Samsung side by side model # RS253BASB, has been freezing the food in the refrigerator side for over 6 months now. I have to put any food that I do not want frozen on the middle shelf or higher. Ice builds up behind the drawers and pushes them out to the point the door won’t close. I have had all the seals checked, defrosted it, and had the coils cleared of ice several times. I set the temp at it’s highest setting and it still keeps freezing up. This refrigerator is junk!!! Is this the website to sign on for the class action lawsuit?

  • Jon Wolk March 1, 2015, 10:40 am

I have a Samsung RS265TDRS which was purchased in 2012. Multiple issues. Most recently water coming from the bottom of the unit which I suspect is caused from a clogged defrost line. The wood under the refrigerator is warping!! Refrigerator temp will not drop below 50 degrees. I need to be included in this class action!

  • J Hilton March 4, 2015, 2:26 pm

We purchased a Samsung (RS267tdb) in Oct 2010. Thankfully we purchased a five year extended protection. The refrigerator side of the side by side stopped working in 2012. My protections plan paid for the repair.
This week March 1 , 2015 the same thing happen AGAIN. repairman coming Friday.
I am trying to join the class Action now. I only heard about it today.

I feel for all of us, who have gone through this ordeal about the stupid Samsung refrigerators. It’s particularly sad to contemplate on discarding such pricy appliance that we were so happy to purchase, just a few years ago. If any of us knew what we know now about this Samsung product, I don’t know we would have been so stupid to get ourselves in to this dilemma; don’t want to throw it away but don’t want to keep repairing it. For a consolation to those who are a little bit technically savvy, you don’t need a Samsung repair person to help you out at an exorbitant price. Ice-build up on the evaporator, is usually due to bad temperature sensor; you can replace it at a fraction of the cost that a repair person will charge you. If the evaporator fans are running but the freezer and refrigerator compartments are not getting cold, and also, the evaporators do not have ice-build up, it may most likely be due to malfuctioning defrost timer. The defrost timer is built into the main PC Board. You can replace the PCB for about $100. To me, it is more prudent to spend $150 to $200 to fix it than to trash my lovely $1600 refrigerator, at the time I bought it. I don’t think you can even buy a good, used refrigerator with ice maker, for $200, today. Good luck. Again, the temperature sensor, PCB main, and sometimes, the start relay for the compressor are the suspects regarding the stupid Samsung refrigerator maladies.

  • M. Leatherwood March 9, 2015, 5:37 pm

I understand the first Class Action Lawsuit is over and pertained to certain Model Numbers only. I have tried to contact Samsung, but they will not respond.

  • Hope Ateke March 9, 2015, 9:14 pm

This is to David Schell’s question … if I fixed my refrigerator. Yes, Dave, I did. Mine is a side-by-side Samsung RS255BASB. I bought it in 2006 at BestBuy. I had a four-year extended warranty on it. I had the same problems that everybody is writing about but BestBuy fixed the refrigerator when it was still under warranty. Now the warranty is expired and I can’t afford to have them or other technicians to fix it. I called a technician and he asked me to call Samsung. I called Samsung but they couldn’t help me, for my warranty was expired. I had to go online and based on the information that I was able to gather, I was able to fix the refrigerator. The problem I had with the refrigerator was that both compartments (refrigerator and freezer) were not getting cold. I unplugged it and left it for about 24 hours. I plugged it back in and it worked for a few hours but started doing the same thing again. I also noticed that the compressor too, did not run but the evaporator fan and compressor fan were both running. After several iterations of this procedure; unplugging and plugging, I decided to change the the compressor starter relay. Changing the relay, did not help it. I changed the temperature sensor on the everporator (coil) but that did not help, either. Again from what I learnt online, it may be the defrost timer. Unfortunately, the defrost timer is not an isolated unit that can be accessed and replaced; it is a circuit on the Main PCB. Therefore, I had to replace the Main PCB. The refrigerator is now working. Apparently, my problem was in the PC board. I don’t know what your situation is but it is quite obvious that the Samsung refrigerators do exhibit the same problems. By this trial-and -error method that I employed, I spent a little less than $200 for the components that I replaced, but my refrigerator is now running; though I don’t know how long it will continue to run. If it goes out again, now I have a little idea as to what to look for. I hope this explanation helps.

  • Jeff Sandford March 9, 2015, 11:41 pm

Same problem with a Samsung RF197ACBP bought in Canada in 2011. We’ve had it serviced 5 times including having the latest “heater” probe installed (didn’t work). The freezing crisper has destroyed a significant amount of produce and we’ve had to unplug and manually defrost the fridge at least 7 times to thaw the ice build-up inside. The food goes down to the 27-year old Sears Kenmore fridge in the basement we bought when we were married. Sign me up….please…I have pictures and service receipts. I’ll never buy another Samsung device again in my life. Neither will my children or relatives.

I have a RF267ABRS and I’m experiencing the same issue. Water is leaking from the coils behind the panel inside the fridge and it’s collecting underneath the drawers. I tried replacing the sensor, problem still exists. I’m not sure where this stands, but sign me up if it’s still possible.

Bought the Samsung in 2010—Loud noises so a tech came out from 70 mikes away and had a hard time finding the address so he installed a new fan motor (which didn’t work) unit returned for another (Sears)—Started freezing up and fan hitting ice after one year—Samsung hot line told me to manually defrost it because all a technician will do it use a heat blower which doesn’t fix the issue—called numerous times—Samsung didn’t have the decency to return calls—BB Bureau and Consumer Affairs couldn’t help—Samsung said their product is only guaranteed for 1 year—Will NEVER buy another SAMSUNG product—Worst Company I ever had to deal with—They are TERRIBLE!

Coils freezing up and stopping fan…
Samsung “repaired” this (service call) Dec 2013
Now its out of warranty and have to I have to do the repairs every 6 months.
I spoke with Samsung 03/25/15 and they said…. they have no knowledge of this issue and will provide no help.

My wife and I purchased a Samsung rs265tdrs just about a year and a half ago. Since then both refrigerators plastic compartments have broken. After reading reviews before our purchase the only thing that worried me was the lack of ice that is produced. We woke up the other morning only to find the refrigerator very warm. After calling Samsung that Friday afternoon we were told that no service would be available until that Monday. On Monday we called to confirm our appointment and were told that they wouldn’t be out until Thursday. As most of you all the food that we tried to keep cold in coolers has now been thrown away.
I will NEVER make a purchase from Samsung again. Has this lawsuit been issued to Samsung at this time?

  • David Stillman March 30, 2015, 9:18 pm

My wife purchased a Samsung refrigerator on 07/30/2011 and we have had several repairs due to the unit freezing up and making a racket. We had to unplug the machine and it takes several days to thaw so our repair tech can fix it. We were recently told that the unit could not be repaired. This is the 4th time we needed repair and we spent several hundred dollars on each repair. Also we lost a large amount of food each time the unit froze up and quit working.
We are hoping to get some money back so we can purchase another refrigerator of a different brand. I usually do the purchasing of items like this and would not have purchased a Samsung.

the same problem is occuring with model RF217ACWP. water leaks into the crisper draws because the coils are freezing and the water cannot drain. Samsung will not assist in repairing the problem again. They did authorize repair twice but the problem started happening again after 7 months. I would like to be a part of the class action lawsuit if this model can be included.

I bought my Samsung Rf217ACBP 3 years ago and the refrigerator is making a loud noise and not cooling!!! Ice forming in all air vents inside. I have called Samsung and they will send someone out but it might be at my expense depending on what they feel is the problem.
The cooling system should not go in 3 years. The handles on my refrigerator have been n peeling paint since a year after i got it, not cured properly and they wouldnt do anything for me… The new handles would be 300.00 … Looks terrible!!!! I will never buy anything samsung as they do not stand behind their junky products… I have ordered a new refrigerator and cant wait to see this one go out the door!! 1000.00 down the drain.. Not right Samsung!!!! After reading all these comments i know im not alone in my frustration.

  • Nathan Edwards April 11, 2015, 8:39 am

I have a similar problem with my Samsung side by side refridgerator Model #RS277ACPN. The evap drain in the Refrigerator section freezes up after just a couple weeks and water starts running out inside refrigerator under crisper door and out onto the floor. I have been dealing with this for several years. I bought $3200 worth of Samsung Appliances in August of 2008. $800Dishwasher was a lemon also, replaced it after about 1 year. Stove still works but had to make couple repairs on it myself. Now back to the Fridge, I tried installing metal drain strap on defrost heater going into drain hole and it still froze up. I figured out the problem is related to the Ice Maker! Samsung thought it was smart to have the control board continue to run the compressor when the ice maker lever is down calling for more ice. This causes extra cooling even durring defrost cycle and thus freezing up. May be some of the problems with other models mentioned freezing up too. I manually defrosted my fridge real good around Jan 1st and ran it for 3 months with the Ice Maker lever Taped in the up(off) position and I did not have any freeze up problem. I comfirmed the drain was still open by using a small hose and blowing back through it from the back of fridge where it drains into the pan. I than put the Ice maker back in service on about March 20th and within about a week the drain froze up and water started running out inside of the refridgerator. I don’t know of any way to fix this without redesigning the Electronic control system. There is really no reason to have the extra cooling it should still make ice without it. We use a lot of ice so arm is very seldom in upward position. I also suspect this effects the energy efficiency by quite a bit having the compressor run all the time while making ice. I know the defrost cycle is working because the coils dont have any ice build up on them when I open it up and I can see imprints in the ice from melting from the defrost heater element. I contacted Samsung by Messageing through its facebook page and was told I would have to pay for all repairs. I told them that was not the answer I was looking for and that they needed to step up to the plate and fix or replace all these Refridgerators. I don’t believe the repair people can fix these so I don’t bother calling them. I’m a retired Chief Engineer from the US Merchant Marine and we are able to fix or repair just about any piece of equipment you can throw at us! I think my model Samsung Fridge and many others that have my same problem should be included in a class action Lawsuit as well! I like the fridge design but its useless to me without an Ice maker!

  • uma April 11, 2015, 8:47 am

We have Samsung RF266ABPN and we have been having the same problem of water accumulating below the big crisper drawer. Right now I have defrosted the drain and hoping it will work. They have used cheap material and I have rust marks. This problem has been in Samsung and other Refrigerators for many years now. Don’t understand why they can’t use non rusting material and build better and lasting refrigerators. In this age of consumerism, I guess some greedy companies want customers to buy a new refrigerator every few years. They don’t mind the effect this short term “use and throw” has on the environment !!!. Will not buy Samsung again !.

  • Miriam April 11, 2015, 10:27 am

We’ve had our Samsung for five years and have to defrost it about every 6 months. Fortunately we also kept our old refrigerator in the garage (it’s from the late 70s!), so if we catch it in time, we have to move all our food to the old fridge and let the new Samsung sit empty and defrost for two-three days. The biggest problem is you never know when it will freeze up again, so we always have our fingers crossed when we have a lot of people visiting. The warranty, of course, had just expired when we first had the problem, so it worked out just fine for Samsung, who obviously couldn’t care less about the issue. Would like to be a part of this lawsuit, if possible.

I bought my Samsung refrigerator RFF266AEBP, black, French Door and I believe I have a defective frozen coil. Two times in the last month I have had 1/4 inch thick ice and water at the bottom of the refrigerator under the deli drawer. How do I get added to the class action suit? I am hoping Samsung Madge’s good with my complaint, since my refrigerator is almost 4 years old.

I have bought Samsung RF263BEAESR/AA in Nov 2014 and having the same issue. It keeps making knocking noise and also the motor is very noisey compare the the GE fridge that we had earlier.
