Philips Magnavox Flat Screen Plasma Television TV Class Action Lawsuit Settlement

If You Purchased New Or Received As A Gift A New Philips Or Magnavox Plasma Television Manufactured Between November 1, 2005 And December 31, 2006, You May Be Entitled To A Partial Refund Or Voucher From A Proposed Class Action Settlement.

A class action settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit against Philips Electronics North America Corporation (“Philips Electronics” or “Philips”) and Funai Corporation, Inc. (“Funai”) (collectively referred to as the “Defendants”) pending in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey in Newark (styled In re Philips/Magnavox Television Litigation, Class Action Case No. Case No. 2:09-cv-03072-CCC-JAD) alleging, among other things, that Philips manufactured and sold plasma flat screen televisions under the “Philips” and “Magnavox” brand names at major electronics retailers in the United States that suffered from a design defect that causes internal components (called capacitors) to prematurely fail,
resulting in the televisions becoming inoperable, purportedly in violation of state deceptive trade practice laws, breaches of implied warranty, and unjust enrichment, according to the Philips Magnavox Flat Screen Plasma Television TV Class Action Settlement notice.

The Philips Magnavox Plasma Flat Screen Television TV Settlement Class reportedly includes all persons who purchased new or received as a gift a new Philips or Magnavox Plasma TV of one of the following models in the United States with a serial number reflecting a manufacturing date between November 1, 2005 through December 31, 2006 (the “Philips Plasma TVs”):

50PF9830A/37      42PF9630A/37
50PF9731D/37       42PF7321D/37
50PF9631D/37       42PF7320A/37
50PF9630A/37      42PF7220A/37
50PF9431D/37      42PF5321D/37
50PF7321D/37      50MF231D/37
50PF7320A/37     50PF7220A/37

The Settlement Class Members have been divided into five categories (Categories A-E), and each category is entitled to a different level of benefits from the proposed Settlement. The extent of the benefits to which class members are entitled will depend on the following factors:

  • Whether class members previously contacted Philips to complain about the problems at issue in this case.
  • Whether class members’ Philips Plasma TV exhibited a problem with capacitors on the power supply board.
  • Whether class members previously paid to have their Philips Plasma TV repaired due to a problem with capacitors on the power supply board.
  • Whether class members already obtained any refund from a Philips-related entity or any retailer for their Philip Plasma TV(s).  Anyone that has already obtained any refund from a Philips related entity or a retailer in connection with the Philips Plasma TV(s) for which the Settlement Class Members seek relief here is excluded from the Settlement Class.

The Court will hold a hearing in this case in Courtroom 2B at the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, 50 Walnut Street, Newark, NJ 07101 at 10:30 a.m. on December 15, 2011 to consider whether the Philips Magnavox Flat Screen Plasma Television TV settlement is fair, reasonable and adequate.

I purchased last May 2006 a 42 inch Philips plasma tv, and broke after
almost 2 years of use, and just threw away the tv. I know I registered this tv with them, right now I don’t have any receipts or documents to show them. What are the steps to do to be entitled to refund Thanks.

for $3,000 this Plasma TV has been a total disappointment. I wish I was informed of this suit. I wrote numerous complaint emails, letters, and made phone call to Phillips and they were horrible. I WILL NEVER AGAIN PURCHASE ANY PRODUCT WITH THE NAME PHILLIPS ON IT. I EVEN THREW OUT MY ALARM CLOCK THAT HAD PHILLIPS ON IT.

Hi Tomas: Call the number listed in the announcement. Even without your receipt, especially since you registered it, you can still file a claim. I am just amazed that I was not the only one experiencing this issue with my overpriced TV not coming on. I think last night I press ‘on’ about 200 times before it clicked and the green light came on. Good luck to us both. the number is 1-855-477-4407

I have four Phillips TV – 2 work and 2 don’t work. I will NEVER buy Phillips again. Sad part – one of the TVs that is inoperable was only used about 5 – 7 times in a two year period and stopped working all together. I bought all four TVs from Sam’s Club. Of the two operable TVs, one is on its way to the grave yard as it clicks when the power is off! I have to unplug the TV when it is not in use. Crazy. NO MORE PHILLIPS TVs for me!

I will never buy any phillip products again. I can say that I was one of the lucky ones to have gotten six years out my plasma, but put up $2400 for the tv. It is a shame for a company to cheat consumers with products they know are faulty….

Well I’m submiting my claim today we’ll see what happens. In Feb 2007 we paid nearly 2000 dollars for our phillips magnavox plasma 50″ flat screen tv and have had problems since with it turning on, usually needing to unplug it and plug it back in, up until Oct of 2011 when the picture finally went off on its own and has never returned. This TV had minimum use and for the price and I certainly would have expected a much better product from a company with such standing. Its sad and very dissapointing. Big corp greed eating the heart and sole of hard working Americans then craping it down their throats.

Though I think legal action against Philips Magnavox is appropriate, I am–however–shocked that model 42MF231D/37 is not listed as a defective unit. Mine, bought in 2007, proved to be defective in August 2010. There are NUMEROUS complaints about this very unit; yet, it is not listed in the class action.

I filed a complaint with Magnavox in August 2010 to no avail. The television exudes the same behavior most consumers have documented over the past years: black screen with a few red and green dots; wonderful sound but no picture; and the set would turn on and off on its own for weeks prior to picture screen malfunctioning.

The price tag ($1499.99) is still on the set. It was purchased from Target. I also purchased a $200 warranty that expired just prior to the set malfucntioning.

We purchased a 42MF231D/37 in 2008 for over $1100 from Office Depot. One day, it cuts off, no picture. We were surprised that this model was NOT included in the lawsuit.

I wish I had known about this. I still have my Phillips Tv (and receipt) in a back bedroom. although it is always the luck of the draw as to whether you can power it up or not as it turns itself off when it wants, or simply will not turn on at all. My favorite is to be able to hear it but get no picture. 🙁 Too expensive to get it fixed and yet too expensive to simply toss.

They needed to carry this thing a bit further with Magnavox. Purchased a 37″ LCD TV from them in 2007 and still have the receipt. They put a 25 volt capacitor where a 35 volt capacitor should be. Caused mine and thousands of other Magnavox LCD TV’s to break down after 3 yrs. Found out after we got rid of ours, that the cose to replace the capacitor was about $2.00. When we called Magnavox, they referred us to their subsidiaries to fix and they wanted $200. All they were doing is replaceing the $2.00 capacitor which they could do in 15 minutes. Found this all out too late. Shame on them

I have a 50 inch Philips plasma TV with ambilight that was purchased in 2006. After 2 months, the tv would not turn on. I sent in for repair under the manufactures waranty. It took a month for my TV to be repaired but they did repair it. A few days ago, it did the same thing it did 6 years prior. The tv would turn on with only sound but no picture. I took the tv apart and discovered 2 capacitors on the power supply board were swollen up. I went to the local electronics store and purchased 2 new capacitors for $3.20 total. I replaced the capacitors and what do you know, the tv works now. I hope this helps for some.

On behalf of my mother she purchased the 55 inc Philips flat screen and she has had nothing but problems, and now where we live they don’t even work on them anymore, they tell us to remove the bulb and replace it, but why should she or I have to do that when she paid over $3,000.00 for it. This is crazy I want to know if there are any lawsuits against this, I’m going to file for her.

  • Janice Nickeo July 18, 2013, 5:36 pm

I can’t believe they charge so much money for something to work only a couple of years and then have no place for it to get fixed without additional expense.

  • Janice Nickeo July 18, 2013, 5:36 pm

They should just replace the TV free of charge and extra for inconvience

  • Janice Nickeo July 18, 2013, 5:37 pm

    Rigged TV

I purchased the 50PF7321D/37 and the picture went out and I had the red blinking light. When I called Phillips they told me my warranty expired by 30 days and it wasn’t covered. The set cost almost $3,000 bucks. I had to have it repaired and the power supply board replaced and it still doesn’t work right. I wish I new about the class action law suit…The tv only worked properly for about a year and a half total.

Shame on Philips AND Sam’s Club for not just sending debit cards to the TV owners like me. I bought the so called 2008 Eco Tv 42 in for $999 plus taxes PLUS I got the extended warranty. Where in the f__ is the honesty to not proactively contact us. SAMS and PHILIPS likely knew the capacitors would pop after the extended warranty expired. JUNK they sell and make JUNK. The lawyers are crappy too because they should have insisted on proactive payments with notices. Here it is and WHERE is my check! Oh its too late to file? what the????
