Whirlpool KitchenAid Self-Cleaning Oven Class Action Lawsuit Complaint

Whirlpool KitchenAid Self-Cleaning Oven Purchasers File Class Action Lawsuit Against Whirlpool Over Alleged Defects.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Whirlpool Corporation (“Whirlpool” or “Defendant”) in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York (styled Richard Wolfson v. Whirlpool Corporation), alleging, among other things, that Whirlpool designs, manufactures, sells and services self-cleaning ovens sold under the brand “KitchenAid” that as an alleged result of a design defect and/or a defect in material or workmanship: (a) use of the self-cleaning cycle as few as one or two times renders the KitchenAid Ovens unusable without costly repairs; and (b) use ofthe self-cleaning cycle five or six times damages the KitchenAid beyond repair, according to the Whirlpool KitchenAid Self-Cleaning Oven class action lawsuit complaint.

The Whirlpool KitchenAid Self-Cleaning Oven class action lawsuit complaint is reportedly brought on behalf of a putative class consisting of the following persons:

All purchasers who, on or after June 3, 2008, purchased, at retail price and for personal use, a Whirlpool KitchenAid brand self-cleaning oven (the “Class”) in the State of New York.

Is only for people of New York? I’m in TX and my KA oven is less than 2 yrs old – when I hit “self-clean” for the first time, it heated up, and soon after shot hot glass onto my kitchen floor when the interior door panel shattered. KA said this has happened before, but will only offer me 50% off the replacement part! Is it just defective glass, or a faulty thermostat, or WHAT? How can I join this lawsuit?

I live in Parrish, FL. I have had mine for 4 months and same problem. Is there a class action suit in Florida?

  • Elizabeth MacClain November 22, 2011, 12:28 pm

Is there a similar lawsuit in California? I have had this very problem and am outraged that Kichenaid will not repair. Details below:

I purchased an Architect II series gas range in July 2009. The range is in a home that is inhabited only part time, and has not been used much. In fact, it has probably been used a total of twelve times in two years. The first time that I used the self-clean function, the digital control panel went blank and the oven door remained locked. This occurred after about 1.5 hours of the self-clean cycle. I have researched this issue and discovered that it is an exceedingly common defect. Although this is marketed as a self-clean oven, it can never be self-cleaned without the risk of damaging a fuse that controls the control panel. When I contacted Kitchenaid, they acknowledged that this defect has been recognized and repaired, but that my model and serial number do not fall within the recognized group of defective products. My product is an Architect Series II Gas Range. The numbers associated with it are KGRS807SSS and XY0202920.

Can any one tell me if there is a similar lawsuit in PA I have a three year old Kitchenaid microwave oven combo and used the self-clean mode for the first time and the enamel lining has bubbled and pealed away. Just got off the phone with Kitchenaid and they tell me they are going to do nothing about it. Model number KEHU309SSS.

This class action lawsuit refers to only the owners of the Whirlpool product in the state of New York. I’m not sure if similar class action lawsuits has been filed in different states. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this trial. I’m eagerly awaiting on updates on this.

      Andrea,
In 2004, I had my kitchen remodeled…Ichose to go with the Kitchen Arcithec Series…As recently as of August 2011…I put my built in wall oven into the cleaning mood, after and hour and a half.. The control board went blank the door remained locked and I was without an oven until November…. After several attempts with the repairman coming back at least 4 times the oven was not repaired…The repairman informed me that all kitchen aid product replacement parts are refurbished…So in the long end and $4000 later I had to purchase a new wall oven…And Kitchen Aid coustomer service pple were very unprofessional and rude in helping me…

Have a 3 year old KA model KEMS30855502 and just used the self cleaning feature for the first time. The glass shattered from the inside and blew out into my kitchen from below the door. I live in RI. Any suggestions on what to do. I have also replaced the thermostat twice and it was still not accurate. Help!

  • Christina Battell April 26, 2012, 8:20 am

I purchased a KitchenAid double oven and had it installed in January, 2012. On Easter, I used the self-cleaning option. Lo and behold, the oven door exploded and blew glass all over the kitchen floor. We are still working on repairs but I have been advised by KitchenAid to only use the self-cleaning option every 90 days. Gosh, wonder why? This is just plain wrong. I completely understand the lawsuit. With an oven as new as mine, a replacement is in order, but is not going to happen. I am told that the warranty is “repair only”. Talk about living by the letter of customer service and not the spirit of it!

    • Chris June 10, 2013, 9:33 am

We purchased our KithchenAid double oven in May of 2012 when we built our house. Yesterday (less then one month after our year warranty), the exact same thing happened to us.

Thankfully, the builder has agreed to replace or repair the door.

  • Karen McCurnin April 28, 2012, 8:23 am

My Kitchenaid wall oven (2 years old) exploded
During the cleaning cycle. Lava Hot shattered glass flew all over the
Kitchen. Ruined the floor, not to mention the fire
Risk since it continued to run! Smoke detector alarmed. Thank God I was home to turn the oven off.
    I called Kitchenaid,
Not under warrenty. This oven should be recalled!
What a danger! And $500 to replace? No thanks!
I’ll get a new oven. A crime after only 2 years!

  • Susan B May 21, 2012, 10:56 am

This problem goes back further than 2008, it seems.

I have a Whirlpool Gold oven that was installed early in 2005 as part of new home construction in Texas. I just used the self-clean for the second time ever and the oven stopped working. ~ The repairman said that the self cleaning tends to blow out the “thermal fuse” and basically said, “Just don’t use the self-clean, it’ll probably blow out again.”

Seeing the defects that later ovens had, I guess I got off easy.

    • Vicky Ross August 21, 2013, 8:35 am

I have a Whirlpool Gold wall oven that was installed in the
early part of 2002. I started having issues with the self-clean
in 2002. I have had service 6 times for the “thermal fuse”
malfunction. l time the glass in the door cracked and had to
be replaced. I have been told the story about not using the
self-clean due to blow out again and just clean it myself.
I am awaiting the 7 th service call to see if it is another”blowout”
…I was told by the last service man that everything had been
replaced in the oven and there was no way it should blow out
again….I used the self-clean this week….guess what??? Oven
would not heat up after the self-clean was used…..This has
been over a period of 4-5 years I have been dealing with this.
I am under a home warranty and have been for several years.
They say that when they leave it is working again after replacing
the thermal fuse or whatever and they cannot do anything about
the fact that when I use the self-clean it blows again…under
their contract it is working when they leave my home……..
I have owned several homes over 52 years and never had such
a nightmare over a wall oven or any other appliance. If you
look to have to buy a new wall oven the $$$ is ridiculous plus
installation. Cant anyone do something to compensate the
poor consumers that had the misfortune of living with this
      problem???

  • SANDY ODELEIN June 13, 2012, 1:39 pm

I live in Canada and have had the same issue over and over with my oven….is there any class action suit filed in Canada. I am interested in this!

    • Lynsey February 20, 2014, 11:52 am

If your still interested I live Toronto and twice they are coming to repair Nutid wall over after a self clean. If I don’t get a refund I will start an action and happy to advertise for other in Canada to come forward for a class action.

  • Irene H June 25, 2012, 11:37 am

This exact thing just happened with my 6 month old Kitchen Aide double oven. We are in Illinois. The store has offered to replace the shattered glass, but I’m concerned about using it again in case the explosion caused other damage to the unit. Any input?

  • Linda Roos July 19, 2012, 1:18 pm

Is there a similar law suit in Colorado? I just had a expensive repair bill after self cleaning my oven.

  • Kelli September 1, 2012, 8:22 pm

OMG! This explosion just happened to me today so I thought I would go online and see if it was ever heard of!!! It freaked me out. We live in a brand new home in Southern California. This is the fourth home I’ve lived in and always self clean my ovens. After living here for two months I figured it was time to clean the oven. An hour later, glass shattered EVERYWHERE! Thank goodness my kids were in the other room. Now what??? Our home is under warranty and this better get replace. Totally uncalled for!

Oct. 7, 2012 I have Kitchenaid built-in double ovens that are hardly used because they are in a 2nd home. The ovens are 2 years old and I have yet to use the self-cleaning cycle. While I was broiling in the top oven, it exploded and glass shattered all over the kitchen. We were lucky that no one was in front of the oven at the time. These ovens are extremely dangerous and should be recalled.

  • sean bahri October 22, 2012, 1:32 pm

bought kitchenaid single oven model kebc107kss about 4 years ago, used self clean, got PF error message, oven does not heat anymore,
I sell appliances at lowes, changed my opinion of whirlpool/kitchenaid
for good.wish they had reset button to resolve issue than having have to go through major repair, no more kitchenaid for me.

  • Susan Wilson November 20, 2012, 1:01 am

My first meal cooked in the Kitchen Aid wall oven was Thanksgiving dinner 2011 and I hadn’t used the self-cleaning option until tonight – just 3 days before Thanksgiving 2012. Was completely unaware of any problem until the inner door glass exploded and spewed hot shattered glass all over my kitchen. Will contact the store where I bought the oven and Kitchen Aid to see if they are more receptive to replacing the oven. From previous comments, I’m not expecting good results

  • David Nussbaum November 29, 2012, 7:27 pm

How do I get in on this lawsuit, day after thanksgiving I decided to use the self cleaning function of my 13 month old kitchen aid oven and after 1.5 hours I heard what was similar to a gunshot and the house smelled like an electrical fire, the oven door had exploded and glass was everywhere, kitchen aid wants to replace the glass not the oven. How do I know this will not happen again! This company is the worst.

    • Lori January 24, 2013, 7:35 pm

Hi David. My KitchenAid double oven is 8 months old and just expoloded in my kitchen yesterday. I am flipping out. I am outraged that Whirlpool could care less. They are sending a tech out tomorrow to repair the glass which is by no means good enough. How can we be certain this will not happen again? Can I ask you for an update on your unfortunate situation? Have they replaced your oven?
      Please let me know.
      Thanks kindly,
      Lori

Is there a lawsuit in Florida because my paint is chipping off and KA says that it is cosmetic. How is paint falling into your food cosmetic? I don’t trust cooking in my oven due to the chipping paint. The paint started chipping off after my first cleaning.

  • Julie Olson December 25, 2012, 9:30 pm

Purchased Kitchenaid Architect Series Double convection built-in oven Feb 2012. First time we used cleaning, theglass blew up and set off smoke alarms in house, what a mess. The explosion was hard enough to gouge the enamel interior. Under warranty. Kitchenaid scheduled a repair, but all they did was clean up the visible glass, kind of, and order and install replacement glass. the did not take the oven apart to check for any internal damage from the excessive heat or glass, nor run any diagnostics on the computer control panel to see if the problem was fixed. They also denied any knowledge of other unit explosions, and when I mentioned the number of reports online I was told that people lie on the internet all the time. They refused to replace the oven.
Now the oven does not cook evenly, the front of the oven is hotter than the rear, food cooks much slower that it should, an oven thermometer shows it doesn’t heat to set temp or hold it there.
I saw a class action suit had been filed in NY, and a Houston attorney was putting one together for Texas

    • Jeremy Perot November 25, 2014, 9:10 pm

The glass in our Whirlpool that came packaged with our home built in 2012 just exploded on the first time running the self cleaning. Thirty minutes into the process the inner pane shattered. I contacted Whirlpool and they acted like it was the first they have heard of this happening! I asked why there were already class action lawsuits in multiple states for this and they had no comment. Of course I didn’t buy an extended warranty and I’m a year out of the manufacturer warranty. They were “willing” to let me purchase an extended one year warranty and pay for the service call for $330! I declined the warranty and will never buy Whirlpool again.

  • marion wilkins February 3, 2013, 1:25 pm

After 4 visits and $200 plus and four service visits finaly got part but door does not have ant resistance. Now nothing works only light comes on in Micro bot nothing on control pannel. Checked breakers and re-set still nothing.

  • Karen lyne February 10, 2013, 8:55 pm

I have a KitchenAid range I purchased the end of may 2012. I used the self cleaning oven feature for the first time today. After about a hour and a half, the stove made a popping sound and sparks of fire flew put the upper right side in the back . My husband threw the breaker to the stove. The stove was so hot could not touch it to move out from the wall. When it cooled down my husband put breaker back on so we could. Unlock the oven door and see if the stove was still working. More sparks came out and nothing was working . I need a new stove as I will never be comfortable with this one again. I live in Nebraska.

  • norma kessler April 26, 2013, 5:44 pm

well add me to the list of exploding ovens. On upper oven, same thing inner glass exploded during self cleaning, glass blew out from bottom vent I guess, blew all over the kitchen. First time cleaning 8 month old oven. Kitchen Aid sending technician tomorrow, wish me luck. Will never be comfortable again self cleaning this oven. It is still under warranty for whatever that is worth

  • martye ballenger June 4, 2013, 5:25 pm

Add me to the list. We purchased our home in Dec.2006. The appliance package came with the house, so we had no input on the ones selected for the house. We didn’t like the refrigerator ’cause there’s no room at all, but that’s another story. Guess I should consider myself lucky that I didn’t have any flying glass or such when I had my 2 self-cleaning disasters. My oven didn’t spew shattered glass, but just displayed PF on the panel. We went through the steps listed in the manual and $175 later, we had a working oven. I just figured it was my bad luck and didn’t give it another thought. Fast forward 3 years and I figured I better use the feature again.(I was told years earlier if you didn’t use self cleaning/disposals etc. then when you needed them, they wouldn’t work–or as the saying goes, “If you don’t use it—-“.) Same song, second verse. I didn’t remember it happening before until I pulled the folder to look up info on the oven. There it was, the receipt for the service call made the other time I dared use the feature. My husband called the company only to be told in so many words, “Too Bad. It’s been over 12 months!” After going on line he discovered numerous similar complaints with the oven. I checked with a local appliance dealer that was aware of the problems and that the company was more than aware. I called and demanded to speak to a supervisor that gave me the same run around ’bout the company’s 12 months policy. I informed her that I wouldn’t go away quietly in the night. When I said that I wanted to speak to someone that made such policies when they are all too aware of the existing problems, she said she was the highest level of authority that would speak to customers. Really? If that’s the case the ovens should come with a warning, :Buyers Beware!- This product has imperfections, so if you choose to use the self-cleaning feature do so at your on risk. She told me it wasn’t necessary for me to be so rude, she wasn’t be rude. Then she told me to do whatever I wanted to do, but the company wasn’t concerned. Guess not. Seems they have been allowed to get away with selling a product they know has problems. Why didn’t they put out recalls? I need to know what steps to take next. They must be held accountable for knowingly selling an inferior(and sometimes dangerous) product. I don’t know if it has to go state by state, if so I live in Louisiana. M.

  • Beverly September 18, 2013, 7:59 am

If anyone in North Carolina is aware of an attorney handling a class action against Whirlpool, can you please contact me. I have bee fighting the fight since spring 2012. Our KitchenAid double oven free standing range was purchased in September 2011 when we built a new home. I used the self cleaning oven in early 2012 and the house smelled like an electrical fire. When I opened he top oven, the blue enamel inside the oven was cracked and splintered with big pieces still coming out whenever I wipe out the oven. I am afraid to use the self cleaning feature again. Whirlpool tells me this is cosmetic and not a technical problem, but there will be no enamel remaining if this continues. Whirlpool never responds to me in writing; they have their flunkies call me and tell me over and over that it is cosmetic and that this issue was caused from TIN FOIL in the oven. Any help is appreciated.

    • Natalie Tyre July 7, 2014, 7:13 pm

Did you ever get a resolution to the porcelain chipping?

    • Nancy Evans September 15, 2014, 8:08 pm

I am in North Carolina and purchased KitchenAid Dual Fuel Range Architect Series II in February 2013. After running clean cycle the bottom of oven lining was pitted and there was an outline of the heating elements beneath it. I had a tech come…he was very nice, told me the lining is a “Non Serviceable” part…meaning it can’t be repaired. He told me not to ever run cleaning cycle again. I’ve been researching this and am amazed at all of these similar problems over a period of years and nothing has been done! I’m getting rid of this dangerous range! Did you get any positive response from them yet?

  • Ra November 23, 2013, 7:55 pm

Well add us to the list if exploding ovens too. Tried self clean for the first time and it sounded like a gunshot so we ran into the kitchen Only to find hot lava glass shooting out 10 feet from the oven! Fine shard type powder glass. We will never get the glass out of this thing. Ever. This needs to be recalled before someone is really hurt! Kitchen aid is lucky in that my children weren’t hurt bc they would be toast. We plan on fighting this hazardous piece of crap appliance.

  • alan dietrich December 10, 2013, 9:34 pm

Purchased kitchenaid wall oven in 2010. The second time we used the self cleaning it blew the thermal fuse. The person i contacted at Whirlpool said she wasn’t aware of this problem. I’m in Kansas is there a class action that I can get into.

  • Karen Davis January 21, 2014, 1:31 pm

I bought a Kitchenaid oven in June 2009. It is an Architect Series II. We don’t use the oven that much, so I finally decided to clean it January 7, 2014 because it was a cold day and I thought it would warm the house up! I started the self-clean option at 10:30 am. It got extremely hot. It has never opened again! There is nothing on the screen and according to Kitchenaid customer support, it has probably fried the insides! They have agreed to pay the labor and for the parts to fix it, but refused to pay for an additional technician to help pull it out from the counter so that the technician can look at the back of it. Two technicians have come to look at it, but have been unable to open it from the front and say it has to be pulled out in order to repair it. Kitchenaid says that’s not their problem. So we are having to pay out of our own pocket to hire a second technician to pull it out and then put it back if it’s repairable! Is there a class action suit that I can join in Maryland?

  • Roxie Stork April 1, 2014, 5:16 pm

I this class action suit still onging? I live in Nebraska and would like to be included. I purchased a KitchenAid double oven when we were building our home in 2012. Of course the warranty has expired. Two weeks ago the glass in the top oven door exploded during the self-clean cycle. It had completed 2 hrs of the 3-hr 30-minute cycle. Thankfully I was home to turn it off before anything else happened. It shot out glass thru the heat vents. We had glass on countertops, floor and even some in the lower oven. It also scorched the interior of the oven about 2″ all around the door so it is black instead of blue. I called the store where we purchased it and they just said “it happens”. I emailed KitchenAid and have had no response.

  • Ahlise Coyne April 13, 2014, 4:02 pm

I live in the Chicago area. Same thing happened to my KA 30″ Double Convection wall oven when I used the self cleaning part. KitchenAid needs to be help accountable. They almost laughed at me when I called. It is like they ALL know about it & treat you like a dummy when you call….Horrible. Anyone know of a class action suit in Illinois ?

    • Michael August 30, 2014, 4:58 pm

Ahlise–I am in the Chicago area as well and mine just exploded today. Did you find a class action suit in Illinois?

  • Irene Petrowsky April 23, 2014, 7:59 pm

Yet another customer Kitchenaid has lost. We purchased a house last year with everything KA. A couple of days ago during my first self-cleaning on this oven (out of warranty), we had it explode with hot glass spilling from vents all over the floor. Just like in the previous cases, the oven did not shut off automatically, but continued cranking up the heat . That is an absolute hazard in the house. After three days of phone conversations with Whirpool, the manager offered 50% off on the replacement parts only. We did not agree to it. We’ll be taking it to court. Any suggestions how to handle it in Columbus, OH?

  • Michael August 30, 2014, 4:50 pm

Just to add to the evidence. During self-clean one hour ago (2nd cleaning since purchased in 2011), the inner glass of the door exploded–broken glass all over and right on the dog’s food and water bowls. Although I wasn’t home at the time and usually the dog runs free through the house, fortunately, I had taken the dog with me this afternoon. I will call KitchenAid next week and investiage if there are any class action suits in IL.

  • A CARTER September 29, 2014, 11:57 am

Interested in joining any class action suit that is in the process of being filed in CALIFORNIA for defective Kitchen-aid double ovens. Shattered glass after using self-cleaning feature for the first time. The oven is only 1.5 years old. Thanks!

  • John Orourke March 15, 2015, 10:30 am

Received my new Kitchenaid gas range yesterday, turned the oven on to bake fries and the inner glass exploded, they are sending out a new oven, but after reading all the other comments, this seems to be a constant problem, not sure I want another one, any Class Action suits in Ohio?

  • Edward March 23, 2015, 6:10 pm

I have a 6 month old Kitchenaid double oven. I found chips of enamel and called a service repairman. I was informed by Kitchenaid that it is a cosmetic problem not covered by the warranty. If anyone knows of a class action lawsuit please let me know.
