Samsung Refrigerator Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Filed Over Alleged Frozen Coil Defect

October 1, 2010

Samsung Refrigerator Owners File Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Against Samsung Over Alleged Defect That Causes Refrigerator Coils To Freeze Over.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Samsung Electronics America, Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (hereafter “Samsung” or “Defendants”) in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey (styled Jeff Weske, Jo Anna Frager and Darryl Myhre v. Samsung Electronics America, Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Civil Action Case No. 2:10-cv-04811-WJM -MF) alleging, among other things, that Samsung sold refrigerators containing a defect that causes the refrigerators’ coils to freeze over, resulting in the failure of the refrigerator to cool, which has caused consumers to suffer damages for lost groceries, spoilage and repairs, according to class action lawsuit news reports.

The Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit complaint reportedly alleges that certain Samsung French door, side-by-side and bottom freezer refrigerators (model numbers RF266AASH, RS263BBWP, RB1955SH, RS2533SW, RS267LASH, RS267TDRS, RS2630WW) the refrigerators are designed and manufactured with heated coils that are intended to prevent excess frost from developing in the back of the machine, but instead of preventing frost, the coils allegedly allow frost and ice to build up in the refrigerators until the ice clogs and/or disables the machine’s fans, making it impossible for the fans to work to keep the machine cool.

The Samsung refrigerator coil class action lawsuit complaint is reportedly brought on behalf of the following putative class members, unless otherwise excluded:

All persons or entities residing in the United States who own, or have owned, Samsung refrigerator models RF266AASH, RS263BBWP, RB1955SH, RS2533SW, RS267LASH, RS267TDRS, RS2630WW and/or any other Samsung refrigerator model containing a defect that causes the refrigerator’s coils to ice over and the refrigerator to stop cooling.

It looks like you can request information about the lawsuit from one of the lawyers handling the case from this website.

The first time we had an with issue the coil freezing up , we had to at the advice of online techs use a hair dryer to unfreeze the coils in order to get to the major problem, order a new ice maker, and install it. It worked for a couple of weeks before the same problem occured again. We simply melted the frozen mess as before, disconnected the ice maker and removed it. Just as many of our neighbors in Franklin, we don’t have any extra cash to deal with sudden unexpected problems such as this.
We relied on buying bagged ice to get us through.
We had also noticed during this periodof time that the temperature inthe fridge and freezer didn’t seem to be just right.
On 2/7/2012, the digital display went out on the unit. We have a RB215LASH/XAA Model. We went on line and tried to place a a service order, but received no direct response. I called Lowe’s where we had purchased the refridgerator, got a local repairman’s number because as I had explained to Samsung; by this time our food in the refrigerator was starting to freeze and we had no idea how to measur how cold the freezer unit was getting. A second frantic call from us to the local repairman let us know that he could’t even order the part he would need to fox the fridge until Monday. (All of this was transpiring on a Saturday.) It would take at least a week for the part to arrive and the cost was going to be between $300 – $500. Unfortunately, we did not have an extended Warranty on the Fridge. Our food was freezing in the fridge. We had only had that Samsung since August 2009! At any rate, we ended up having to go to Lowe’s that Saturday night and purchasing another fridge large enough to barely meet our needs and accommodate the food we needed to store. My ony question now is: Where do we sign? This has truly been a nightmare!

I have called on numerous occasions to the lawyers that are handling this action, and have yet to be contacted. These refrigerators are pieces of S***. Mine hasn’t even lasted a year. I replaced both fans in the damn thing a month ago, and the freezer is starting to act up already.

We bought the Sansung RS267LASH on Nov. 06. Also purchased the 4 year extended from Lowe’s.Less than a year later had to have ice maker replaced. Took weeks, as very few certified Samsung repairmen in our area. A year later same thing, new icemaker. Year later new ice maker… then it stopped cooling on the refrigerator side. all food spoiled. They said that the fan froze up.. Again it took weeks to get the parts, workedfine for a few months… until the ice maker stopped working AGAIN.. this time I cannot even pull the ice tray out of the unit to look at it… Repairman scheduled…BUT my warranty expires on 11-2011. Does Samsung CARE?? Lowes?? Sorry..S.O.L.!! I will Never buy Samsung anything again!!

I purchased a Samsung RF266AE BP french door bottom freezer refrigerator two years ago. The drain line became clogged with ice about two months ago and I still have not been able to resolve the problem. I defrosted the refrigerator after the fan began to be blocked by the ice then plugged it back in. Same thing happened about two weeks later. So, again defrosted the refrigerator. Called Sears service and waited two weeks for the technician to come to my house. Then he said he could not do anything because it was frozen up again. He said if he took the cover off of the coil, it would become damaged if there is ice present. Now I am waiting for the technician to come back as my refrigerator is being defrosted again.
I wish I could just return the refrigerator. I would buy an American made refrigerator instead of this lemon.

I have a GE bottom freezer fridge and I just had the same problem with my fan freezing up and fridge not cooling, it took 2 months for the repairman to fix it because a new motherboard wasn’t available and the fan problem wasn’t diagnosed until the second month! My Visa warranty program paid $400 to fix now. Now I am getting water under the deli drawer that is freezing up and causing the drawer not to open. The repairman said I need a $95 kit to catch the dripping water. I am so sorry I got rid of my old 25 year old fridge which worked perfectly and never needed repairs.

We had the same problem with our Samsung. Our freezer went out April 2011 at only about 1 1/2 years old. They repaired that and then immediately the water started building up in the bottom of the refrigerator. This went on for months. They replaced the water tank / line but water continued to build up under the bottom drawer and freeze up. We would get an inch or more of water that we sopped up regularly as we waited months for the warranty repair companies to try and fix the problem. Finally Lowe’s thankfully refunded us the full purchase price. After reading the posts above, it definitely makes sense that there is a major issue. I did find links below for additional information: I sent my information to Zimmreed with our refrigerator model #. We want to do all we can so no one else has to experience what we had to go through.

Same problems. Model # rs2530bbp has been repaired numerous times. Won’t make ice then does and freezes everything up. Compresser fan has broken at least 2 times and we were lucky we didn’t have a fire. The authorized repair man won’t come any more because Samsung doesn’t reimburse him without a fight. This item is a piece of —-. I have complained and complained to Samsung to best buy but can get no help. Any repairs have only lasted for for a short amount of time. There should be a large lawsuit against this company for selling known defective products.

I bought my refrigerator from Sears less than two years ago (French doors with bottem freezer). During the first year the refrigerator stopped cooling. It took Sears almost 2 weeks sent repairman and another two weeks for parts and repair (This is not the old Sears but the new K-Mart/Sears).
The repair involve replacing the main circuit board. Now the freezer section is frosting over and becoming a solid piece of ice. Adjusted temperature for freezer section from O to 6 degrees F and it still does the same thing.
I have never had real problems with a refrigerator in the 50 years that I have owened refrigerators. How can I join the class action lawsuit.

Samsung RS267TDPN – died suddenly after 2 1/2 weeks. I first noticed frost in the freezer and water dripping from the water spout. Upon hitting the water dispenser, it just stopped working. No power. After 24 hours, after putting some bags of ice in the freezer and closing the door rather hard, the power came back on. So after having time to defrost, it began working again. Sears agreed to deliver another one. From what I read here, I better choose another brand. Too bad because it really is a nice looking refrigerator.

Yes, The RF267 Serires need to be added to the Lawsuit. Similiarly, after about a year of usage, it iced up in the back. After defrosting, it keeps coming back. We MANUALLY DEFROST and it works. It is justs pressing 3 Buttons. However, This is NOT acceptable — but it gets by for this defective product.

Bought Samsung model R263BBWP from Best Buy in ’06 thinking it looked like a good value and because of the marketed dual cooling. The refigerator worked well for the first two years and then began icing up. I defrosted it on a weekly basis for nearl 3 months before calling a repairman who knew exactly what the problem was and replaced the heating coils under warranty. Within 3 months the coils began to ice again and the refigerator temperature hovers betweeen 45 and 50…well over the safe range for refrigerating most foods. My wife and daughter have been suffering from a variety of stomach issues for the last 2 years and I wonder if the inadequate refrigeration is to blame. Can’t really afford to spend another $1300.00 to get a new one only five years after the initial purchase. I unfortunately own a Samsung Washer/Dryer, Television, and Surround Sound System but will not purchase another Samsung item until and unless they are willing to take responsibility for this issue and make it right with the consumers.

I have the RF266ABWP bought around 2008. Every 4-6 months we have to pull the cover off the coils inside our French Door Fridge and defrost the coils. Samsung knows they have a faulty product but just don’t care because Consumer Reports is selling the heck out of this fridge for them. I want in on this lawsuit so badly.

We have been having these problems for over 3 years now!!! Contacted Samsung several times.
Just last night came home to a noisy fan and had to chop the ice off the inside of the Fridge and take apart the freezer and chop it away from the fan!!! I have done this several times over the last year. It is getting worse. We are afraid to go away for extended periods as to what might happen. I am frustrated and would like a new fridge!! I would like any people in Canada to contact me or reply to this forum. Is it possible to join this suit or should we start our own??

Then it broke again with in a week of the first repair. I was lucky that time cause it was still under warranty. But it has now died again because the coil system has frozen over and killed the fan and the warranty has expired. How can I join this lawsuit?

I have a Samsung Model # RD2534WW that was purchased in August of 2004. The freezer started icing up on the lower coils about a year and a half ago. I guess I should be happy that I’ve had 5+ years of solid use but I’ve just been taking off the back panel and defrosting it myself. A repair man I called said he’d just do the same thing if I scheduled a service call… But charge me a service call fee plus $50/hour to sit there with nothing more than a hair dryer to defrost it.

Obviously, its still icing up or I wouldn’t have found this site! Have any of the repairs worked for anyone? I’m looking into changing the thermostat but I’m not sure where to begin!

It’s unfortunate that my garage refrigerator, that is nothing short of 17 years old works better than the energizer bunny.

However, on a couple of occasions I called the service department when the refrigerator wouldn’t stay cold and they told me to unplug it for about 15 minutes. After doing this several times; I learned not to call them and just unplug it for the 15 minutes. After reading the complaints and having the same issues, I believe the class action suit is warranted. I will not be buying another one.

RS263BBWP – Just had the coil freeze problem recently with my fridge. After some searching I found out about removing the back panel. TONS of ice all over the coil. I cleaned all the ice off with a hair dryer, but the fan is not working either. I’m not sure how to test it, but the coils are getting cold and forming frost again. I’ve never had a problem with this fridge in 5 years. I will definitely look at a different brand if I have to replace it.

I have the RB215lash and I am experiencing the same scenario , the freezing of the fridge and the defrosting and refreezing of the freezer. The unit runs none stop it is costing me money to keep this 3 year old refrigerator. A product that cost this much should not be defective as this one is.

I have an RF267AEWP French Door bottom freezer fridge. It’s just 2 years old… (a year out of warranty). The fridge part is iced up to the point where the fan’s making noise… (like it’s hitting something – I believe it to be ice)… I can see Ice through several of the opening’s at the back of the fridge, and at this point am planning on using my extended warranty to address it…

After reading this, I’m wondering if this will ever be “right”.

You need to take everything out of it and unplug it from the power asap. Ice builds up on the evaporator and soon starts obstructing the fan which would lead to its failure. I just had that problem and the fridge no longer works. My fridge is only 16 months old and feels like my lunch cooler. Samsung would not admit to the problem and my research found out that a repair like this might cost around $400-500. I sincerely hope that the alleged lawsuit against Samsung is ruled in the consumers best interest and they cover everyone expensive repairs and product loss.

    To whom it may concern:
I purchased a Samsung refrigerator R5267/R5269 in 6/07/06. I would assume it would last for some time. Yes we understand the limited warranty and parts but, one would expect a refrigerator would last for a decent amount of time.
I have had refrigerators in my life time but none can compare to this piece of crap. The water only runs when it feels like it, the vegetable draw had to be removed because of ice buildup. The buildup of ice in the back of the Chill draw was so much it broke loose and pushes the draw out. Now the Chill draw is hanging for dear life. Anything below the Chill draw will freeze. We also keep a towel on the floor for leaks when water tried to run.
I tried to call service is in area but no one wants to deal with Samsung products they said parts are hard to fine. There may not be anything we can do at this time but I had to let you know about your product. It is very stressful to retire and find out what you put your money into does not work. We hope other customers do not have to relate to this problem.

    Sincerely;

I have a Samsung bottom frezzer refrigerator model # RF266AASH/Xaa and now the icemaker has broken for the 3rd time, twice while it was under warrenty and it took two and a half months for the repairman to fix,(he could not figure it out) it was the circuit board. Now the ice maker is broken for the 3rd time, guess its time to go out and buy another Samsung (right), the review on the samsungs were great but I guess words are cheap and so is the design of their products.

I have a Samsung RS265TDRS and last week it started making this loud noise as if I had a tractor running in the kitchen downstairs. So, I figured it was coming from the back right side and ones I opened that door it would stop. I shut the door and here it was again. It got so loud that we could hear it upstairs with the doors shut. My wife and I cleared some of the shelves and drawers and we could see the ice built up on the back wall around the lights and air vents. So we unplugged it and let it sit for a while to let that ice melt a little bit. After a while we plugged it back in but left a lot of the food outside so the air can circulate better and hoping that the built in defroster would kick in and take care of the rest. Well, the fan stopped making the noise but only worked for another day. Yesterday morning I found a puddle of water and the cooler temperature flashing at 36′F so I though the defroster finally worked and melted the ice. Not exactly. The cooling fan refused to work any longer no matter how many times we unplugged the fridge and plugged it back in. Now the temperature is stuck between 55-60′F and I am afraid that all the food including the baby’s stuff is going to be spoiled tomorrow. I already called Samsung and…Main Warranty just expired ! I was told that the unit needs to be serviced and there might be a chance that the problem might be covered by the 5 year warranty of the sealed system. I left my name and number and I am expecting a call from their service appointment team. Then I found out about the ongoing lawsuit and my problem sure sounds like it is a part of the global consumer problem with the Samsung refrigerator defect that Samsung would not admit or recall. It is a great shame that they would not admit that they built quite expensive refrigerators that tend to fail within 12-18 months of use. I have never had a problem with any other make or brand, especially one that is 16 months old. If anyone has any information on how to join that lawsuit, please let me know. I would greatly appreciated that and hope to hear from you soon.
By the way I was told that that repair might cost around $400-500

We have a Samsung RS263 TDWP/XAA we purchased at Sears in August of 2010. It has the same problem described by owners of this class action suite. The refrigerator coils and fan freeze on the refrigerator side, but not the freezer side. The repair man said that he wanted to replace the temperature sensor and the mother board. This is about a $450 repair. However, it sounds like this will not fix the problem.

I also purchased a samsung refrigerator to put in our new house in 2004. We paid a lot for the twin cooling side by side fridge from best buy, model RS253BAWW. 7 months ago the fridge began not cooling to its normal usual temperature. What stayed at 36 was now increasing to 47+ degrees. This lasted for a while, then slowly began to creep even higher. We too called a samsung repairman to use fans and blow dryers to remove and thaw the ice from the inside of the fridge. This did remove ice, but fridge maintains 57 degrees now. The freezer is now starting to have the same issue with an increase in temperature. I don’t know what to do except for buy another fridge, duh… not a samsung! This is a disgrace and samsung should replace or at the very least reimburse all these poor customers. They truly should be ashamed putting their name on any product at this point, cause truthfully, I will never buy a samsung product of ANY kind!!!!

I read through some of the complaints, is this lawsuit still active? I was told, just today, by a Best Buy repairman that the heater is out on my Samsung Model RS2534WW and that the amount of work involved in getttig to the heater would cost me the equivalent of a new, more reliable refrigerator. The freezer coils have been icing over for the last few years, I have been defrosting it myself. It’s just got to the point my 7 year old Samsung is worst off than my 20+ year old garage refrigerator. The Samsung was bought brand new when we moved into this house… As the saying goes, They don’t build anything like they used to. This Samsung purchase was a waste of $1600

I guess I should count myself lucky considering I’ve had my (RS2578SH) Fridge since 2005 and only now has this problem started. Still, it’s unacceptable especially considering the number of people this is happening to and the period of time over which Samsung has been aware! My problem began two weeks ago. At that time I found a fix on You Tube which required me to remove the bottom cover and use a hair dryer to defrost the coil. It did resolve the issue, but as of yesterday, it has come back all over again and this time it looks even worse than before. With warmer outside temps, I predict more humidity and even bigger ice build-up problems during the spring/summer months. I’m handy, so I’ll check the heating coil to see if that has gone out and is the root cause for my particular model’s (RS2578SH) problem. But if not, I too would like to join in this class action!!! Refrigerators of my past have lasted well beyond 7 years. Most, even triple that amount of time!!! For $1900, I expect a state of the art appliance that will last at least 15 years. That’s not too much to ask considering the performance of other refrigerators I have owned for a fraction of this cost!
Where can I sign up too!!!!!

We have a RF267ABRS model. Water then ice formed under the chiller tray. Removed the ice several times because the tray wouldn’t come out. Traced the source of problem to the coils and the non-functioning heater element and a frozen drain hose. On the recommendation of a neighbor, I may install a piece of wire to the element and snake it into the drain hose. Trying to determine where the hose drains to…Of course, we’re about 9 months out of warranty on our less than 2 yr old unit. Any help would be appreciated! How do we join the class action lawsuit?

I have a RF266AEPN that is not cooling in the refrigerator section that is just past two years old . This is a French Door model with a bottom freezer. The Freezer seems to be working adequately and keeping temperatures at -2 degrees and it is making ice. The Refrig section is at around 51 to 53 degrees F, much above the desired setting of 38 degrees F. I see ice buldup in the vents at the back of the refrigerator. I sounds a lot like the same problems that everyone else is having. This appears to be a design flaw in all their models. Samsung should be forced to come up with a fix and supply it to all that have this problem. My daughter has the same refrigerator that is about three years old and has not had a problem …………knock on wood!

When we purchased a Scamsung ( Samsung) refrigerator model rf266abpn back in late 2009, I thought it was supposed to keep things cold, not freeze up and get hot and spoil all of your expensive food !!! If I’d wanted another oven , I’d have bought one ! We purchased it from Lowes, and when we approached them with our problem, they , of course , passed the buck to Scamsung who screwed up the service order, then cancelled the service order without informing us, so while we were awaiting a service tech to come and fix our refrigerator
( a week before Thanks giving ) they cancelled the service visit and did not tell us. After having no refrigerator for nearly THREE WEEKS , and Christmas coming fast , they finally managed to get a service tech to come and try to fix the problem ….
No such luck !!! Since then , this scenario has re-occurred at least a dozen times !! I’m getting tired of transporting all of the food to coolers, and the old rusty refrigerator in the shed. Which is over TWENTY YEARS OLD by the way … Boy, they sure USED to know how to build ‘em . What the heck happened ?!?!?!? That old refrigerator in the shed has a light bulb in it ( which still comes on by the way ) , and nothing else . Maybe if my new refrigerator just had a light bulb in it and not all of the rest of the unnecessary , digital crap that makes it look more like something out an Orsen Wells novel than something to keep my beers cold , I could go to the grocery store and be able to buy items that have to be refrigerated after opening … Will somebody please tell me what I have to do to get some compensation on this disastrous purchase . The frige in the barn is packed , and my beer is hot .

We bought the Sansung RB215LABP on Mar. 07. We also purchased extended warrenty from Lowe’s. Less than a year later we had to have the mother borad replaced. It took weeks, Lowe’s ended up giving us a loaner frgi. There aren’t any certified Samsung repairmen in our area. We lost $250.00 worth of groceries. The warranty ran out; and we’re still dealing with a defective peice of JUNK!!!! It either it will freeze everything to the point of frozebite or it will defrost everything! The freezer won’t stay at set temputure…the recommendent setting for the freezer is 10 degrees, however it will reset it self to 37 degrees causing everything to spoil! I’m so sick of this. And know one wants to take responssability. I no longer have warranty…It makes me sick to think that we spent close to $2,000.00 on a brand that its known for excellances; and it turned out to be a peice of crap!!!! No one Cares, everyone passes the bock! Does Samsung CARE?? Lowes?? I will Never buy Samsung anything again and I will tell anyone that will hear me…NOT TO BUY Samsung!!

I have this same problem with our samsung refrigerator. It actually expelled a drawer out of the refrigerator in order to be able to close the door. Now I have had to unscrew the screws holding on the meat drawer as it was tilting all of the sudden. I have had this worked on at least 2 times. I just saw this class action lawsuit. Is it too late to join onto it. I am going to have to pay to replace my very expensive refrigerator because it will not be fixed. Also the automatic ice maker has chewed plastic parts and spewed them into various soft drinks during the past 6 months. I am really disgusted with this Samsung Product and would like a refund of my money. Not to mention losing an entire refrigerator full of food and freezer full of meat twice. I can no longer store milk in the door of it as the milk goes back after a few days even though the 38 degree temp. reading says it is at the correct temp. I am guessing that there is a giant “ice dam” in the back of the refrigerator pushing out all of the drawers. Soon I won’t be able to keep anything in it except baking soda.

My family and I have just experienced the same problem! Our freezer stopped working completely. The temperature won’t stay on -2, it jumps to 53 which obviously won’t freeze anything. We’ve only had it for 4 years, which for a fridge it’s not that long. These new high tech appliances are very defective. I have no idea what to do about this. Do i pay for repairs or pay 3 grand to replace it. This is ridiculous, our last fridge we had for over 15 yrs w NO problems. My model # is Samsung RF266ABPN. WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO??????????

I have a Samsung RF217ACWP, a bottom freezer top French door model. It has temperature control problems that cause food to freeze in the refrigerator section. I turned up the control from 37F to 39F but it still still happens. Not sure that this is related to the freezing coil problem.

We have a Samsung Refrigerator model 267AERS, we bought from Sears just over a year ago for about $2,000 dollars. The fan noise (due to ice build up) has been a nightmare. I have contacted Sears and Samsung and no one will stand behind the product. I cannot believe it’s not tagged to this lawsuit yet. I have unplugged several different time also manually defrosted with a hair dryer. The fan noise and ice comes back within 24 hrs. Now I am looking to replace the evaporator coil to see if that is the fix. My cost doing i myself is about $40. If in fact this works. Does anyone have anything to add to this comment on suggestions or help ? Thank you.

He says since he came before he has another one doing the same thing, and that the talk with Samsung is to replace the refridgerator fan motor kit. Samsung has agreed to do this at no cost I pay the $120 labor fee.

I think we have the earliest failure to date! A new French door Samsung model RFG29phdrs/xaa was delivered to our new home on 5/2/12 by Sears contract delivery and installation employees. We returned to home on 5/4/12 and found a flooded house! It appeared water was pumped thru water dispenser for hours. Hardwood floors are now being removed and fans/dehumidifiers have been running for 3 days , hopefully to save cabinets, walls , and to prevent mold and mildew. After initial call to Samsung to inform them of our disaster, we have had absolutely no contact. We were told our case was being sent to “Product Liability Team” and they would be calling us. Ha-ha.
Our model no. Does not match those listed in class action suit, and we do not know if defect lies with the cooling coils. Not sure exactly what we are going to do, but hope someone (Sears, or our insurance co) can recover the thousands of dollars in damage caused by Samsung.

Model no RFG29PHDRS/XAA . Connected 5/2/12 and flooding occurred 5/4/12. Samsung will not call us after their customer service person passed details I provided on to their product liability team.
Appears water came from water dispenser on outside of unit. We have several thousands of dollars damage to hardwood floors.
