Polaroid LCD TV Television Class Action Lawsuit Complaint Filed Over Alleged Overheating

Polaroid LCD TV Purchasers File Class Action Lawsuit Against Polaroid Over Alleged Polaroid LCD TV Capacitor Overheating.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Polaroid Corporation (“Polaroid”) and PLR IP Holdings, LLC (“PLR IP”) (collectively “Defendants”) in the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota (styled Karen Hudson v. Polaroid Corporation and PLR IP Holdings, LLC), alleging, among other things, that Polaroid LCD TVs sold nationwide at large and small chain stores, such as Wal-Mart, Best-Buy, Sam’s Club and Costco and on the internet, are allegedly defectively designed as they expose the TVs’ capacitors to excessive heat and/or excessive voltage, which in turn, can cause the capacitor to fail, the circuit board to shut down and the Polaroid LCD TVs to exhibit problems such as dark screens, smoking and even fire, according to the Polaroid LCD TV Television class action lawsuit complaint.

The Polaroid LCD TV Television class action lawsuit complaint is reportedly brought on behalf of a putative class consisting of the following persons:

(a) All persons in the state of Missouri who purchased one or more Polaroid LCD TVs (the “Missouri Class”).

(b) All persons in United States who have purchased one or more Polaroid LCD TVs (the “Multistate Class”).

The Polaroid LCD TV Television class action lawsuit complaint reportedly asserts claims for alleged violations of Missouri’s Merchandising Practices Act, Minnesota’s Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act, consumer fraud, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, unjust enrichment, money had and received and injunctive relief.

My TV also started sizzling and smoking. Thank goodness I was in the room. I would also like to be on the lawsuit. I did not get any satisfaction when I called Polaroid. They told me that they were a 3rd party and that the old Polaroid went bankrupt. They are a different company. Please let me know what happens.

Yes like with many of the big brands today the name on the front has little or nothing to do with who and were its actually made by… polaroid is just a holding company that bought the name to peddle other no name products to people who still believe in the old world mentallity of brand names and dont pay attention… phillips , magnovox, westinghouse zeinith and many other old names brands that sold out do the same… phillips leases there name to other companies like samsung. they havent made a tv themselves since like 2006… I repair tvs and often the same tv will be sold under 4 or 5 different bran names in different cases…with different prices and support… Its the american way now unfortunately. and people have no one to blame but themselves for not being an educated consumer.
I just finished repairing a 40″ polariod with a burned up power connector on the powersupply… it was fairly charred but the tv is 7 years old and they are now designed to last an average of only 4 years.

if you paid 1,000 for a 32 inch lcd hdtv you almost deserve it to break…32 inch polaroid tvs are cheapest brand out there… so in ending you jus made yourself look like a total ass posting this…sorry but where I come from we call it a bullshitter or just a plain liar pal…

I have read all of the comments and I am just one more in line of the long list of dissatisfied people with the same crap product. I bought the 42″ on black friday at Walmart in 2010. So it hasn’t even been two years for us. We already to had to send it back in the first six months because it smoked and blacked out. Now we are having the same problem again. I’m not sure what would have happened if I would have even been in a different room of the house because I smelled it smoking and burning. We have tried everything that has been recommended to try to fix it but no luck. Just like everyone else, we are caught in the economy and have no money to replace the set. While we are sitting at home waiting for anyone to call us back for a job, we have nothing to watch. If there is anything that I can do to help all of the others, count me in. Maybe Polaroid can take all of our dead tv’s and make one large graveyard. They have more then enough of our money to support that.

  • chris October 19, 2012, 10:24 am

Our 32″ Polaroid TV started smelling like burning plastic then “CRACKLE” no power, picture or anything… this happened on 10-11-12. I read that it could cost over $300 to fix and i can get a new TV from Best Buy for the same price which we did on 10-12-12. How do we get involved with the class action law suit?

  • George Romanyshyn October 29, 2012, 7:05 am

Last night while watching our Polaroid TDA-03211C TV it started smoking from the back. If we had not been in the same room and unplugged it immediately, we would have lost more than our TV. Polaroid should be ashamed of not standing behind their products and issuing a safety warning.

Not just this website but across the internet, beginning to see a pattern of (TV has sound but no picture – black screen issue). It seems Polaroid knowingly sold faulty Digital TVs that had only a 2 year lifespan, coinciding with its retail distributor Currys who sold meaningless ‘Whatever Happens customer agreement that expired within the TV lifespan (this is mis-representation)

Like many customers here who have experienced a faulty TV, and the hundreds others over the internet on watchdog forums, we all have the same problem (unresolved issue no clear answers, money wasted) we’re all in the same boat … its not a surprise that Polaroid are no longer in the business of manufacturing TVs.

When I bought TLU1541 15″DTV in 2007 for £230 through Currys, I was pleased with my product, the TV worked perfectly fine for two years then suddenly black screen issue happened, it did not overheat or smoke – sound but no picture. Some TV experts say its ‘capacitor LCD backlight fail’ because the TV is fine up until the black screen kicks in, the (no picture) issue happens in a matter of minutes, the longer TV is switched off the longer it takes for the black to appear.

Even today, after 1 year being switched off – I switched on the TV could scan for new channels, change menu configurations, scroll through and watch DTV channels and then the dreaded black screen. (Unlike a Laptop LCD screen that burns out and would constantly remain black until it is fixed), the Polaroid TV boots up with Polaroid logo screen, goes to blue screen indicating DTV is on and then its like something internally in the TV triggers the screen to switch to black.

In all fairness http://www.Polaroid.com , http://www.Polaroid.co.uk can easily say they are a different company to the one that existed before bankruptcy, but the Polaroid corporation still function as a company, so I do not understand how they can say that are not responsible for their branded products sold through trusted third party retailers, legally Polaroid should take responsibility for faulty products and compensate the consumers

      Julie W:

My tv had the exact symptoms on our 46″ Model TLA-04641C. It turned out to be a bad solder joint on the inverter board. It’s a simple fix but you do need to be handy with repairing electronics. The TV is simple to disassemble and get to the inverter (it’ll have to be layed flat and some books, or such, placed across each corner so the LCD does not press against anything). You should then see a bad/burnt solder joint where one of the windings connects to the board (the bottom winding and lowest and outer connection). Resolder it and this should correct the problem. Did on mine, thank God and goodness. (Disclaimer: Try it at your own risk as I am not a professional repair person.)

We purchased a 37 inch TV from Walmart. It’s been 4 years and it has black screen no sound! I think the polaroid company should compensate people for this! Pretty sad that you pay this much for a TV and it quits working! Polaroid we thought would be good because of their reputation for cameras and such! I guess we were wrong! How do we get in on the class action suit? We had our last TV for about 20 years and now it is an extra at our son’s house! So 4 or 5 years for a tv to last is not acceptable! American’s work to darn hard to get what they have& then it doesn’t last!

  • Margie November 29, 2012, 3:06 am

Please include me in the calss action law suit. I purchased a Polaroid TV from Walmart December 2, 2008. It failed in 6 months, had to ship it for repair and had to pay for shipping and repair to authorized place.
IT failed agaian 6 months later. Walmart employee would not honor warantee since this was the second time of failure and said: “What do you expect for a cheap TV when others cost thousands of dollars?” I have been using the TV portion of the TV, the DVD player has not worked for years. Today the screen went black!

  • TERESA December 29, 2012, 9:30 pm

Bought my Polaroid 32″ with dvd player in 2008 and just started hearing a hissing sound like gas escaping from TV and then went black and now no sound either. This just happened 40 mins ago!!! Please include me in lawsuit!

  • Daniel Satterfield January 16, 2013, 2:14 pm

We have a 32 inch polaroid LCD TV. One day I turned on the TV and after a few minutes I heard a noise and noticed that my screen had went black, but I still had power and sound. Not sure what the problem is with the TV, but I took the back off and had to rplace two capacitors because they were bulging about ready to blow. Still no picture and since we had to buy a new set dont want to spend any more money on such a poor design. Let me know what to do.

My 37″ Polaroid with DVD which I purchased at Walmart in Fort Wayne, IN back in 2007 just started smoking. Three months after purchasing the set the built in DVD player stopped working and since I didn’t purchase the extended warranty I was told I was SOL. The DVD player has clicked and whirred ever since when the set is turned on. Luckily this evening my wife was watching the set at the time so we unplugged it and no other damage was done to our home. How do I join the class action lawsuit against Polaroid

I tried to join this lawsuit and the attorney told me that it was dismissed. I agree with Julie W:

“In all fairness http://www.Polaroid.com , http://www.Polaroid.co.uk can easily say they are a different company to the one that existed before bankruptcy, but the Polaroid corporation still function as a company, so I do not understand how they can say that are not responsible for their branded products sold through trusted third party retailers, legally Polaroid should TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for faulty [DANGEROUS] products and COMPENSATE the consumers”

  • Peggy York March 1, 2013, 6:41 pm

I would like to join this class action lawsuit. I bought mine at Circuit City and it went out a month after the company closed. It is currently “Modern Art” in my living room with a working tv on a cart in front of it. I’m in a wheelchair so moving it around a lot is not a valid option.

  • Andrew Savoy March 4, 2013, 9:52 am

Are you kidding me? Might as well sue Vizio, Panasonic, Philips/Magnavox, Samsung, etc., while you are at it. They all generally use the same components and just rebrand them. Capacitor failure is not the fault of the company whose name is on the TV, it’s the fault of the company that makes the capacitor and the circuit boards. I’m a repair tech and I’ve repaired hundreds of TVs, monitors, and computers with blown capacitors…. or worse problems. Root of the problem- you want cheap stuff, you get cheap stuff. Period.

  • Edwin H. Lipton March 5, 2013, 10:42 am

I too have a 32″ “poloroid” and right in the first year the remote reciever went out, thought it was the remote it self bought new battery’s to no avail, then the screen became cloudy and just yesterday I was watching the National News and all of the sudden the sound became fuzzing and then a puff smoke out of the top and no more sound! I got better junk in my shop thats twenty to fifty years old and steal works that didn’t cost me $900 bucks out the door 6 years ago. This thing was junk from the get go, the only reason I didn’t return it was because EVERYTHING went digital so my old set would not work anyway. I fiqured I could live without the remote, the clouding screen, BUT no SOUND? Put me in the suit too!

  • Edwin H. Lipton March 5, 2013, 10:57 am

To Andrew,,, “are you kidding” Hey does your commode work? Bet you did not pay $900 and have it quit in less then a year, and you didnot have to pay a Plumber double what the damm thing was worth, I know Cause I have contracted thousands of Construction Jobs in my time from Multi story Hotels down to the simple shop sh**ter and stood behind both product and install. I have had to make the manufacture responsible before faulty materials and compensate me for my labor,,,poloroid is bigger then I ever was. CHEAP is not an excuse unless the buyer is aware of the risk of fault to begin with, Who would ever suspect a Time Honored Co Name Like “Poloroid from dealing in the Junk Buisness! But then maybe you have so much cash that $100’s of bucks means squat to you, in that case send me some, thanks in advance Mr. Trump!

    • ken January 31, 2014, 10:07 pm

if you contracted 1000’s of construction jobs over the years especially commercial work you should easily be able afford a better brand of tv… period…plus have enough $ to say screw it n go buy another…. typical construction worker complain about everything, claim to be the best and think your owed something in life from others for your own bad choices… talk like your some big contractor then by the end of your lie the truth comes out…hilarious….

  • jolene March 14, 2013, 10:44 am

Wow! Well i bought two (2) of these tvs. 32 inch lcd polaroid flat screen with internal dvd player. Barely used one and the one i used for almost a year went blk and 2 days later the barely ussd one zzwent blk too. Have sound but no picture. Smoking with bad smell came from them. I find it strange that the one dfor my sons room was barely used, and still went out 2 days later. Spent full price for these tvs not on any sale and im out$1,500.00 or more cause we bought extendd warranty each for a hundred bucks more. That endd up a nightmare. Not fair and my son ws alome in his room whe this tv strted going off smoking making noise! Not happy

  • Glen Silliman March 19, 2013, 4:37 pm

My Polaroid T.V/DVD player is about three years old. After the first six months the DVD part stopped working but no big deal..I had a DVD player anyways.Right from the beginning we had the ‘black box’ issue and eventually I found that by hitting the aspect button on the remote the box would go away…sometimes for a few minutes and sometimes for weeks at a time. Now today it blew up and smoke was pouring from the back of it.Not even thinking about having it fixed. We will buy a new one but this time it won’t be a polaroid. They should have stayed with making cameras(even then they weren’t the best).

  • patricia Nobles April 12, 2013, 10:13 am

I bought a 32 inch polaroid T.V. several years ago and had not had it but a year when as I was watching it, I heard a hissing sound and a flash like lightning and a bunch of smoke came up from behind the set. The screen went black, but I could hear the sound for and if my son had not been there to act quickly and unplug everything, It might have caught fire. I reported it to the better business and it was then I found out that I wasn”t the only person that had a problem with the Polaroid T.V. I didn’t know that a class action law suit had been filed for I was told that there was nothing I could do to get the Polaroid people to make it good , so I just forgot about it and it wasn’t until today I saw this and now I want to join in this class action lawsuit . I hope it’s not too late and I want to know who I contact.

  • Dana Morrison April 25, 2013, 5:58 pm

We bought a Polaroid Flat Screen with the DVD on the side from Walmart. The DVD was the first thing to malfunction. Have not been able to use it since then. Next the tv was plugged in and it would not turn on. I took it to a tv repair and paid 100.00 for repair. Now it has a dark mark in the center of the screen about the size of a thumb. It just appeared about a month ago. It is sad that Polaroid had a good name and we believed we bought a good product. We got no help from Polaroid or Walmart. What do I have to do to be a part of the suit?

I also have a Polaroid 42 inch TV. For two years the TV had a tornado looking mark in the center of the screen. At one point it I was unable to turn it on. When it finally died it made a fizzling, crackling sound. I would like to join in on this class action law suit, what do I need to do to join in?

    • Leona Whitten June 11, 2013, 11:22 am

It’s my understanding that you don’t need to do anything at this point. Unless you opted NOT to be included you are part of the suit. However, who knows how long this may drag on…

I moved to FL in June 2011 to take care of my disabled 89 year old father; just in the nick of time. He has significant hearing & vision problems.
My father purchased his 32″ Polaroid with DVD player in 2008 from Walmart. The DVD player hadn’t worked for sometime he said.
One afternoon while my father was watching tv smoke started coming out of the back of it, our first instinct was to pull the plug. We haven’t touched the tv since.
What if I had been out on an errand and the place caught fire while I was not there with him?
I cannot believe this class action suit is not settled yet; just the fact that many models were illegally marked UL Listed.
I can’t find out much about what is going on with the suit; only know that as long as you didn’t opt out you were included.

I bought a 23″ HD LCD Polaroid TV around 2008 from Walmart. Two years later after a move, the TV no longer worked. It simply wouldn’t turn on. We had other TVs, so it wasn’t a big deal and we put it in the back of the closet. Years later, I hear about this class action lawsuit. What can I do about this? Do I need to submit a formal statement?

  • S Mattingly January 6, 2014, 2:45 pm

Few days after purchasing a 42″ TV it would not work right. A tech came out and replaced the mother board with a refurbished one. T V has always had a popping sound as it turned off. Sometimes there is a smell from it. Now a black area appears on the screen with typing in it. After reading all the fire and smoke incidents, I will worry if this T V may catch fire. Add me to the list of unhappy consumers. Would like to have updates on the lawsuit as well

Had tv for a few years turned it on tonight picture started to jump and then went black and smoked. Glad we were in the room. What a scary thing!

  • Mike February 7, 2014, 4:41 pm

I paid over $700 for my 32″ Polaroid TV/DVD combo. The very first thing that went out on it was the DVD player. I contacted Polaroid to complain and they said I needed my receipt, which I could not find. I finally got a hold of the Walmart where I bought it and it took them several days to dig through their computer files but they did find it. It was unreadable. I cleaned it up the best I could and scanned it to my computer and emailed it to Polaroid and they responded with “It’s out of warranty now.” It wasn’t when I first started complaining to them. Then low and behold the Picture went out on it. Still had sound, but no picture. A couple of capacitors overheated and swelled to their breaking point. I’d be willing to bet everyone who is having problems with the smoking and fires that it is some capacitor inside that caused it. Capacitors store electricity so if they overheat and swell, they pop almost like popcorn and a chemical inside will ooze out and of course if there is still power going to it, it could very easily catch fire. If anyone has anymore info on this suit, please forward it through Facebook or online somewhere so we can get in on it. It sounds like it is a bigger problem than most of us probably thought.

  • Ryan peterson April 18, 2014, 2:20 am

It has definitely been a delay since the last complaint but I’m having the same issue. I was just playing a game on my 360 when I heard a hissing noise that gradually got louder. As this was happening, my screen got darker. It wasn’t even a second after that that I damn near had a heart attack because of the smoke. Needless to say I promptly unplugged my tv. I purchased it back in 2007 like a lot of you did. Based on some of the things I’ve seen here I’m not sure if I can get my money back or anything along those lines, but I will say that it is obvious why they apparently went bankrupt. If the lawsuit is still in courts and there’s any way to add me into the lawsuit, I would greatly appreciate it.

My Mom purchased a 39″ tv at Walmart back in 2007-08. She started having the “tornado” on the screen a year or so ago. She bought a new one and gave us hers. It’s gotten worse so I think we are going to end up getting a new TV too. Sounds like it’d be cheaper! I think Polaroid should fix or replace these televisions. Afterall auto makers are being made to fix things free of charge! I’d like to be in the lawsuit too, but I know nothing will come of it.

UL cerified, bull, this could have caused s fire in her room!! This is such negligence on their part and best buys, they had to know. I want my money back or a different brand tv. Where do I start? Thank God we caught it before someone was hurt or burned in a fire. Shame on all of you greedy companies, this is serious!!

Just had my 32″ lcd tv/dvd (which hasn’t worked since purchase!) combo start smoking so bad an entire room filled up with smoke, my one year old started coughing uncontrollably and my two year old had an asthma attack. I called the number for polaroid. I explained what happened. The agent replied, “I’m sorry I do not know anything about it. Is there anything else I can help you with today?” As though he was ending the call. I begged to speak to a manager. Manager told the agent he was busy and that I had two options. To buy a part to fix the TV or they will file a claim with polaroid on my behalf. I asked to speak to polaroid directly. I was told they could not give me the number. I asked for the manager again and was told he was busy so I told them I’d wait. SECONDS later the manger aggressively answered the phone and repeated my options and then hung up on me. I called back demanding to know the company I was speaking with. They refused to tell me. I asked several more times. They wanted me to give them all my info so they could submit a claim but they can’t give me their info? So, after several minutes they finally decided to tell me. The agents name was Tyrek, the manager, who I also believe to be the owner is named Todd, and the third party’s company name in Delta Millennium. I want to be part of this class action suit. Not a single person I spoke with seemed concerned for my child or showed any empathy for what had happened. It is disgusting to think this is how these businesses operate.

Same thing happened to us, smoking, no picture just sound.
this product is dangerous, and they should have made it right, but they didn’t. Sign me up……company was negligent and totally unconcerned for anyone.

same thing–have always had problems with this tv–had it repaired once by tv repair man and spent close to 200.00 only to get it home and in 6 months still having problems with sound and going black..sometimes will run for about 45 min then sound will go out and sometimes tv goes black—it is a tv/dvd combo and dvd part hasn’t worked in yrs..it is a piece of crap..would love to get my money back for this cheap tv that they knew was defective in the first place-don’t know how they can sleep at night.

The same thing happened to my tv. How do I join the class action law suit

  • Tammy stockeell June 1, 2015, 7:20 pm

Polaroid tda-03211c wont come on unless you power on and off at least 50 times then finally the blue screen disappears and the tv picture appears. Dont dare turn off or you will have to repeat process. Picture has cloud on right side and dvd hasnt worked in years. Annoying!!
